I was playing a BEAUTIFUL Stingray 4 today, a used one, priced at $800 Canadian.

If only it wasn't going into Xmas...

What a WONDERFUL growl those things have! The good news is that there is no ambiguity over what my next bass will be...it WILL be a stingray, all I have to figure out is the color!

Lol, I know about this!

Tried a Sandberg California PM in a shop the other day. The shop was quiet, so the guy says '...yeah, just try what you fancy...' and went back to his tea. Played the Sandberg for a bit, but couldn't resist the call of the Stingray.

Instantly, its there; that growl. And it's clearly louder than the Sandberg, thro' the same rig. But, yeah; I'm playing a sunburst, and there's a blue and a black on the wall, all identical 3-bands. Choices, choices!

I just bought a fix-er-upper bass (Squier HM 5 string...neat and rare gem), so my music budget is spent...but if only.

Seriously, playing a stingray makes me *excited* about the instrument in a way that NO other instrument does, guitar, bass, drums, etc. I just find the thing feels like it was made for me...

That's why I am so certain that my next bass will be a stingray 4, no doubt.

On this subject, how many other people have thought seriously about just running out of a Guitar Center with an instrument. It would just be so easy. If you had a "getaway" vehicle and it was a store that you wouldn't be returning to, I can't see much possibility for failure. It's not like the store employees would chase you. I would never consider doing this at a non-chain instrument shop, but Guitar Center is a large enough corporation that a stolen bass here and there wouldn't mean shit to them and as an added bonus you would be freeing the instrument from a very abusive environment

Anyway, sorry to hijack the thread. I personally love stingrays and would buy one in a second if I could find one on the Portland Craigslist at the right price (around $675).
I got in everyone's hostile little face. Yes, these are bruises from fighting. Yes, I'm comfortable with that. I am enlightened.

I love Stingrays. I decided when I move I'll have to downsize so I'm going to sell 2 of my basses to get a black/black/maple Stingray.

I love my '86 Stingray.... I've almost traded it a few times, but held off. It was my first high-end bass, and it kicks much ass! My only gripe is that it constantly needs new strings. As soon as the strings even think about dying, it sounds like absolute garbage. With fresh roundwounds, though, it turns into the voice of God!

It's got some mojo, but then again it's been gigging for 22 years.

Time for a story and its been a while, but your comment just made me smile.

I was going to the music store with a friend who was looking for Bassman amps. He plays guitar and I wandered over to the bass section "just to pass time". There was a fretless Stingray, slightly used on consignment for 900USD. I picked it up, plugged it it and felt like the fates had handed me MY instrument. I was so enthusiastic that Mr. Tam gave in and let me put the bass on the credit card and I walked out with the most expensive impulse buy of my life.

And if we're posting bass porn, here's my baby.

I'm liking mountaindew's one, because I nearly bought one like it!
It was a 2x pup, same colour and see-thro scratchplate, or the P-bass Plus. The P won, and I know of the guy who bought that particular 'Ray. It would have been about the same age too.
So that's my short story, and why 'Rays aren't far away when the 'one more bass couldn't hurt' thought happens.

Tam, your bass is hot! I take it you're a Pino Palladino fan?

Lol, you're not the first to tell me that.

Not at the time when I bought the bass; I didn't know about his sig bass until Fitz sent me a video of him after I posted a picture of it in the original show off your bass thread.

That is sick...this one was kindof eightie's bright orange..I don't think that PARTICULAR Stingray was "the one"...but if I ever see a used Stingray in a color that screams to me for $800...MINE.
