Today we are going to talk about the concept of "musical shells". This concept has to do with triads and what I consider the three most important notes in a triad: the root, the third and the seventh.

Today we are going to talk about the concept of "musical shells". This concept has to do with triads and what I consider the three most important notes in a triad: the root, the third and the seventh.

We are going to take a look at four of this triads.

The major seventh shell (root, major third and major seventh)

The dominant seventh shell (root, major third and minor seventh)

The minor seventh shell (root, minor third and minor seventh)

The minor-major seventh shell (root, minor third and major seventh)

For the major triads we are going to use a major pentatonic scale and for the minor triads we are going to use minor pentatonic scales.

Use your ears to find the shell combinations that speak to you.

David Wallimann reminds me of an Art History professor I used to have. Seemed like a cheesy dude at first...but you quickly realize he's actually a f***ing genius full of passion! Thanks David, I found this very useful!
