Warm Ups IV

A series of warm up exercises shown in John Petrucci's Rock Discipline DVD.

40
I got all of these exercises from John Petrucci's Rock Discipline DVD. The point is not to develop speed on these exercises but merely to familiarize your fingers with the fretboard. NOTE: use alternate picking for all of the exercises.
Left Hand

Then do it with four picks on each note. With each of the exercises you can reverse the picking (i.e. start on an upstroke instead of downstroke). To make the exercise less tedious you can move the root around and form a progression. Petrucci has his root going from:
A -> C -> E -> C# --> G --> B --> F#
                or
5 -> 8 -> 12 -> 9 -> 3 -> 7 -> 2

    I've only seen the beginning of the video, but doesn't he use A tuning (pretty high for my taste)? So, has this been transcribed since it is shown in E tuning?

    Petruci is God. Great lesson, I'll use it every day Rabid, if you can play all that without looking at the fretboard you shouldn't need reassurance that ur getting betting better...

    you're playing each note individually, you aren't holding any two notes down at the same time. so say you're starting on the low A (5th fret) and then hitting the higher A in harmony (7th fret. if you start on the low A with your index finger, all you're other fingers would be up. then hit the higher A with your ring finger. (now all other fingers aren't touching the fretboard except your ring finger. answer your question?

    khunsa wrote: Dumb Q? but what is meant by alternate picking
    down, up, down, up, down, up...etc with your right hand while you play the notes with your left. it let's you play so much faster. so let's say you're playing an f scale in first position starting on the f on the low e sting. you would go down on the f, up on the g, down on the a, up on the Bb, down on the c, up on the d,...etc.

    Seems good, well done. It's good to see you telling people that you got it from somewhere, unlike some who will plagerise some of these lessons. Good one!
