This lesson is for beginners who want to add up some speed and precision in their alternate picking. This can also be a good warm-up exercise. It's easy and effective. So just grab your guitar and give it a shot!

As the following exercise is for enhancing alternate picking, it is clear that you have to keep the picking motion down-up-down-up-down-...

Begin from the first fret of the first string and follow the tab. Put your metronome at 60/65 BPM.

Part 1
e | --------------------------------------------1-2----
b | --------------------------------1-2-----1-3--------
g | --------------------1-2-----1-3-----1-4------------
d | --------1-2-----1-3-----1-4------------------------
a | ----1-3-----1-4------------------------------------
E | 1-4------------------------------------------------
d u d u d u d u d u d u d u d u d u d u d u d u
Once you play this, you will understand the ascending approach and fingering style of this exercise. The most important thing here is the motion of the pick. Don't pick too hard or too soft. Just be delicate and make yourself enough time to go for the next upstroke/downstroke not missing the beat.

Once you have played part 1, just follow the exact same fingering style but this time it's a descending approach.

Begin from the 4th fret of the 6th string and go according to the tab. Keep the metronome in the same tempo as pt. 1.

Part 2
e | 4-1-----------------------------------------------
b | ----3-1-----4-1-----------------------------------
g | --------2-1-----3-1-----4-1-----------------------
d | --------------------2-1-----3-1-----4-1-----------
a | --------------------------------2-1-----3-1-------
E | --------------------------------------------2-1---
d u d u d u d u d u d u d u d u d u d u d u d u
After completing Part 2, follow the same picking and fingering style and play Part 1 again but this time start from the 2nd fret of the first string. And then do Part 2 style picking and fingering starting from the 5th fret of the 6th string. Keep raising your tempo until you are satisfied with your precision and speed.
