# Learning The Fretboard. Part IV

Expanding on the previous lessons, this lesson explains three-notes-per-string scales, and a clever "backwards" scale to illustrate an interesting way to see the fretboard.

Glad that most people have been appreciating the lessons so far. I took a week break because I thought it'd be good for people to spend more time with the previous lessons. I realised that I made a mistake by using modal scales to explain what I've been trying to teach. These lessons are mainly aimed at teaching the notes of the fretboard rather than teaching scales. Of course, the lessons do kill two birds with one stone by teaching scales and the fretboard, but the primary focus is on teaching the notes of the fretboard, so try to focus on that! This week's lesson will explain three-note-per-string scales, as well as "backward scales", which I'm using to make you more aware of similar notes on the fretboard. The backward scales are not necessarily something useful for improvising, but I've used them to get you to look at how the notes of the fretboard can be used in interesting ways. The guitar is a weird instrument because of the fact that it has six strings. Unlike the piano, the notes on the guitar are not linear. This has its advantages - it means you can jump around intervals more easily than on a piano, but it also makes it a bit tricky to learn the guitar on a theoretical level. I like to think of the guitar as a piano without any black notes to orientate the player. Here is the first set of scales. There are actually quite often four notes on each string, but remember that the most important thing to get out of these lessons is a knowledge of the fretboard and to see how different frets on different strings produce the same notes as others (eg. Fret 7 on the E string is the same 'B' as Fret 2 on the A string).
```E Phrygian
e|--------------------------------------3-5-7----------------------------
B|-------------------------------3-5-6-(8)-------------------------------
G|------------------------2-4-5-(7)--------------------------------------
D|-----------------2-3-5-(7)---------------------------------------------
A|----------2-3-5-(7)----------------------------------------------------
E|-0-1-3-5-(7)-----------------------------------------------------------
E F G A  B C D  E F G  A B C  D E F  G A B```
Note: The notes in brackets are the same note as the note above. You don't need to play both notes, but try to pay attention to similar notes like this.
I didn't do the similar notes thing for the most part of the last two scales. You can try to find them yourself! And I know that I said explaining this with modes was a mistake, but I'm going to continue with it since the previous lessons used the same format. Alright. These are the "backward scales". Most of the time, when you play a scale, you move from the head of the guitar, toward the bridge as you go up the scale. But with these scales, as you ascend, your hand moves from the bridge-side of the guitar, closer to the head. Weird, but take a look:
There you go. Hopefully this is all still somewhat helpful in getting you to see the notes of the fretboard more easily. If there's anything you feel that I have left out, or could have expanded on further, please let me know as I am happy to answer any questions. Next week's lesson will most likely be a short conclusion to this set of lessons, so keep an eye out for it :)
