Hello everybody, Maestro is here and back again with another Music Theory Lesson. In this lesson you will learn about the different durations that each note receives when playing. I hope you guys enjoy!

My goal is to provide those who cannot afford a formal music education with free, quality lessons you can have in your home.

Important terms in this video:
  • Whole Note - In time signatures with a 4 as the bottom number, it receives 4 beats.
  • Half Note - In time signatures with a 4 as the bottom number, it receives 2 beats.
  • Quarter Note - In time signatures with a 4 as the bottom number, it receives 1 beat.
  • Whole Rest - In time signatures with a 4 as the bottom number, it receives 4 beats of silence.
  • Half Rest - In time signatures with a 4 as the bottom number, it receives 2 beats of silence.
  • Quarter Rest - In time signatures with a 4 as the bottom number, it receives 1 beat of silence.

    Everything makes sense but I'm a little confused on exactly what is a rest? I know the symbol but what does it mean? Thanks my name is Jerry
