I went through a stage in my early shredding years where I noticed I was doing legato to avoid having to shred.

I got so angry when I admitted this to myself that I went down the Steve Morse path of picking every note.

Now older an wiser I know legato can be tasteful and delicious (like a good tajine) and put together this simple exercise for my students and YouTube followers. Let's take a look at the lick (see diagram below).

I think it's really cool to involve slides into your legato. It can take you to different places on the fretboard instead of staying in a box or using an obvious 3 note per string diatonic scale shape. Try experimenting with this concept using different modes and keys.

Hope you've enjoyed this! Happy shredding!

I am one of those who prefer to use legato rather than picking to fast passages. love the 'liquid' sound this technique gives to the phrases. great lesson Chris!
