Pinch harmonics, pick squeals, squeallies, whatever you call them... you suck at them.

In this lesson video, Uncle Ben is going to teach you the way to get your guitar squealing louder than Zakk Wylde's hog farm. All aspects of the technique are covered in this installment of the now-legendary "This is Why You Suck at Guitar" lesson series.

We are going to explore the optimum way to set up your amp, how to hold the pick, and a weird trick involving a Sharpie to get you nailing pinch harmonics. Your guitar is going to be squealing like your Aunt Julie on a 2 Live Crew tour bus. So buckle up, grab an axe, and let's get to work!

agreed, I have been teaching guitar for over a decade and the ONE thing that I insist on my students having is good right hand technique, which is normally neglected. in the video "Your Sweep Picking Sucks" he absolutely NAILED it, he said everything that I have telling my students for years. It was so nice to FINALLY see another teacher stress the importance of right hand technique. I get this a lot New Student: I've been playing guitar for ten years, why do I still suck? Me: Well, how long have you worked on your fretting hand? Student: ??? Ten years... Me: O.K. How long have you worked on your picking hand? Student" UUUUUhhhhh... Me: O.K. I think we have just figured out why you still suck

I know! As much as I loved my guitar teacher and still respect what he taught me, I wish he helped me focus more on my right hand technique. I think like 5 years in did he first help me with alternate picking and pinch harmonics, everything up to it was more focused on the musical aspect. Now I'm great at Gilmour/Santana-esque soloing and music writing but I can't sweep pick or alternate pick that well. He was trained in Berklee and is an ingenious guitarist and teacher, but wasn't that invested in shred techniques. Now it's all about the sweeps and the taps

Fuck, this guy made me realise I suck at pinch harmonics because my aunt can't scream properly!

this was a great lesson I already knew about the down stroke pinch harmonic, but the up stroke should make things interesting, looking forward to practicing my up stroke harmonics thanks man this was an eye opener for me

I totally lost it at his attempt on pinch harmonics with acoustic guitar and his "WTF" face. That was amazing vid. I still cant do pinch harmonics properly even though I know the theory behind it. Maybe I am overdoing something but I'll keep trying.

Wait. Scratch that. Success!!! Though not reliably so, but I keep working on it.

Ha! I finally know what it takes to be the King of Guitar Center. Hilarious. Now if I can just get a copy of that yellow painting behind his head, I will be complete.

I have a friend who actually does the clunky index finger trick. And he's actually good at it. I never will understand how he's able to do THAT, but he can't do it with his thumb like most people do.

"Hit it and quit it", that´d do the trick- Thanx for the lesson, well explained.

Actually, I suck at guitar because I learned to play from this place.

No matter how many times the 2 Live Crew joke was thrown in there, it never got old. I haven't done pinches in yeeeeeaaaars, so this was a great refresher. Totally worth watching.

i can do pinch harmonics on any note in my sleep for days but I watched the whole video anyway. I come for the comedy while hes holding a guitar.

jeez everyone so butthurt that they can't do a pinch harmonic as good as someone else... I happen to perfect this technique. There is still a million other things I could use work on with the guitar, just saying I didn't need this lesson but I still watched it.

Great video, really helpful and already have improved. Question regarding holding pick. Do you normally leave such a small amount of tip sticking out when strumming chords as well or do you change holding positions? Curious because this helped with my speed and pinch harmonics but strumming like this seems a little difficult.
