Sup! This is my first lesson and I'm simply gonna tab out and explain some exercises and things for all you guitarists. Here's a very useful alternate picking exercise (metronome could be used, 6 notes per beat):
E-------------------------------------------------------2-3-4-3-2----
B------------------------------------------2-3-4-3-2--1--------------
G-----------------------------2-3-4-3-2--1---------------------------
D----------------2-3-4-3-2--1----------------------------------------
A---2-3-4-3-2--1-----------------------------------------------------
E-1------------------------------------------------------------------

E----3-4-5-4-3---------------------------------------------------------
B--2-------------3-4-5-3-4---------------------------------------------
G--------------2-------------3-4-5-4-3---------------------------------
D--------------------------2-------------3-4-5-4-3---------------------
A--------------------------------------2-------------3-4-5-4-3---------
E--------------------------------------------------2-------------------
Just keep playing the same shape and sliding up a fret after you play an E string. This is a very good warm-up exercise I find. Remember to alternate pick! Heres some hammer-on exercises (Alternate picking helps but isn't neccesary):
E-------------------------------2h3h5-2h3h5-------------------------------
B-------------------------2h3h5-------------2h3h5--------------------------
G-------------------2h3h5-------------------------2h3h5--------------------
D-------------2h3h5-------------------------------------2h3h5------------
A-------2h3h5-------------------------------------------------2h3h5---------
E-2h3h5-------------------------------------------------------------2h3h5--
Just keep repeating that shape over and over until your hands start aching, and then push yourself to play it another 3 times and take a break. Also play the shape using a '2 4 5' shape rather than the '2 3 5' shape I've tabbed out. After that do the shape but as you change strings, change the shape so it looks like this:
E-------------------------------2h4h5-2h3h5---------------------------------
B-------------------------2h3h5-------------2h4h5---------------------------
G-------------------2h4h5-------------------------2h3h5---------------------
D-------------2h3h5-------------------------------------2h4h5---------------
A-------2h4h5-------------------------------------------------2h3h5---------
E-2h3h5-------------------------------------------------------------2h4h5---
Here's another simple hammer-on shape I learned from a magazine (alternate pick is again not neccesary but helps):
E-----------------------------------------------------------------------
B-------------------------------------------------6h8h10-6h8h10---------
G-------------------------------------5h7h9-5h7h9-----------------------
D-------------------------5h7h9-5h7h9-----------------------------------
A-------------5h7h8-5h7h8-----------------------------------------------
E-5h7h8-5h7h8-----------------------------------------------------------

E---------------------------------------------------------------------
B---5h7h9-5h7h9-------------------------------------------------------
G---------------5h7h9-5h7h9-------------------------------------------
D---------------------------5h7h9-5h7h9-------------------------------
A---------------------------------------5h7h8-5h7h8-------------------
E---------------------------------------------------5h7h8-5h7h8-------
That was just a simple speed building exercise that can put into your daily 'routine' or whatever you call it. Here is a matt-heafy style lick that he used on a total guitar 'shred like me' video that can be found on youtube. I'm not sure if this is note-perfect but it sounds it to me (alternate pick):
E---------------------------------------------------------------------------
B---------------------------------------------------------------------------
G-------------------------------------------------------12-14-16-12-14-16---
D-------------------------------------12-14-16-12-14-16---------------------
A-------------------12-14-15-12-14-15---------------------------------------
E-12-14-15-12-14-15---------------------------------------------------------

E---------------------------------------------------------------------------
B---------------------------------------------------------------------------
G-------------------14-16-17-14-16-17-------------------12-14-16------------
D-14-16-17-14-16-17-------------------12-14-16-12-14-16---------------------
A---------------------------------------------------------------------------
E---------------------------------------------------------------------------

E---------------------------------------------------------------------------
B---------------------------------------------------------------------------
G-12-14-16-------------------10-12-14-10-12-14------------------------------
D----------10-12-14-10-12-14------------------------------------------------
A---------------------------------------------------------------------------
E---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now for the ending part of the lick:
E---------------------------------------------------------------------------
B--------------------15b----------------------------------------------------
G-16-14-12------------------------------------------------------------------
D----------16-14-13---------------------------------------------------------
A---------------------------------------------------------------------------
E---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is an Yngwie Malmsteen style lick I also found on the internet:
E--13-12-10-----------------------------------------------------------------
B-----------13-12-10s9------------------------------------------------------
G----------------------10-9-------------------------------------------------
D---------------------------12-10-9-----------------------------------------
A-----------------------------------12-11-12--------------------------------
E---------------------------------------------------------------------------
That lick should be alternate picked, also could be incorporated into a solo. Here is an Alexi Laiho style lick I learned from Total guitar magazine thats awesome if your stuck with nothing to learn:
E---------------------------------------------------------------------------
B---------------------------------------------------------------------------
G-------------------------------------------9-10-13-10-9-10-13s14-----------
D------------------------7-9-10-9-7-9-10s12---------------------------------
A-------5-7-8-7-5-7-8s11----------------------------------------------------
E-5-7-8---------------------------------------------------------------------

E----------12-13------------------------------------------------------------
B-12-13-15------------------------------------------------------------------
G---------------------------------------------------------------------------
D---------------------------------------------------------------------------
A---------------------------------------------------------------------------
E---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's another intermediate exercise lick I learned from total guitar:
E-12-10-8-------------------------------------------------------------------
B---------12-10-8-----------------------------------------------------------
G-----------------11-9-7--9-7-5---------------------------------------------
D-------------------------------9-7-5---------------------------------------
A-------------------------------------9-7-5--7-5-3--------2-----------------
E--------------------------------------------------7-5-3--0-----------------
Okay, now heres an exercise that's very good for string skipping, I got this from an ultimate guitar lesson so if you want a more in-depth lesson on string skipping then search it up, but here is an exercise from the lesson:
E-12-13-15------------------------------------------------------------------
B-------------------12-14-15------------------------------------------------
G----------12-13-15-------------------12-13-15------------------------------
D----------------------------12-14-15-------------------12-13-15------------
A----------------------------------------------12-14-15---------------------
E---------------------------------------------------------------12-13-15-12-
Alright, I hope these exercises help you with your playing, I did not write the majority of exercises shown here, I have simply grabbed n picked little exercises that I use a lot and tabbed them down. Good luck and good playing.

And those who don't know, he is an FINNISH guitarist. And I'm from FINLAND! (It's good to be, ME.)

Good exercises but where's the metal? How are we supposed to apply this to metal?
