The penatonic scale is a great skill to have when it comes to writing songs, or playing metal or rock. Here is a baisc A minor Penatonic Scale:
e|------------------5-8-5-------------------
B|---------------5-8------8-5---------------
G|------------5-7------------7-5------------
D|--------5-7-------------------7-5---------
A|----5-7---------------------------7-5-----
E|-5-8---------------------------------8-5--
Penatonic scales are probably some of the easiest scales to do. In this tablature, V = downstroke U = upstroke
   U V (keep alternating)
e|---------------------5-8-5--------------------
B|-----------------5-8-------8-5----------------
G|-------------5-7---------------7-5------------
D|---------5-7----------------------7-5---------
A|-----5-7------------------------------7-5-----
E|-5-8-------------------------------------8-5--
Now try this
e|-----------------------------------------------------------------
B|-------------------------------------5-8b9r8-5-------------------
G|---------------5-7-5-7-----------5-7-----------7-5---------------
D|--------5-7-----------------5-7-------------------7-5------------
A|-----5-7---7-5----------5-7--------------------------7-5---------
E|-5-8----------------------------------------------------8-5/4\5--
That puts a variation into it. Now, try writing your own solo from this A minor penatonic scale!

If anything, this will just confuse beginners. You didn't explain anything about it. This is why self-taught guitarists have such a hard time learning scales. People throw a bunch of tabs at them and say "this is a scale, go play it" without any explanation condensed enough for someone with little or no music theory background to understand.

do The little dashes between your numbers represent a particular spacing? not frets...sometimes there is one dash, other times more than one. A rhythm?

All the notes are spaced with one hyphen between unless it is a bend or a slide. Just wanted to say it is pretty good.
