G Major Pentatonic 3NPS Lick with Chris Zoupa

Hey guys. Check out my latest exercise/lick using a 3 note pentatonic lick in G major.

G Major Pentatonic 3NPS Lick with Chris Zoupa

The pentatonic often gets a bad wrap as it's often the first "lead guitar playing" scale we learn, and is often over used by amateur players in their early years. It's very easy to get "stuck in the box" when you're dealing with 2 note per string pentatonic box shape formations.

This feeling can lead to shred claustrophobia (a term I just coined) and even lead (no pun intended) to guitar players shunning the pentatonic entirely.

The lick in today's lesson uses notes straight out of the "G" major pentatonic (G A B D E), however when we play it as a 3 note per string pattern we cover a lot more of the length of the fret board. We also now have more options than we did in the 2NPS pentatonic as we can do cooler triplety shred ideas or even add some Satrianiesque legato to it if you're feeling sassy. Let's take a look at the lick (see excerpt below)

The whole exercise/lick uses quavered triplets. The thing I like about the triplet feel is that it gives your shredding a bit of a bounce. You will also need to keep in mind that the pinky is crucial in this exercise... THERE'S NO WAY AROUND IT! It's a good chance to give your pinky a stretch and some love and build him up to become an important member of your hand family.

Well that's about it from me. Happy shredding guys!

Maybe an odd question but can you do more lessons on chords? I find the jazz chords to be very fun and challenging. I think you had a lesson or two with them and it was pretty win. Blues/Jazz/Funk/R&B chords anything like that. Im trying to get away from bar chords. Sorry for saying chords so many times. Awesome lesson btw! My pinky hurts

I love all your words, Chris. Shred claustrophobia, triplety, Satrianiesque. Gold. Great lesson as always!
