Over 20,000 Detroit rock fans have signed a petition calling for Nickelback to be ditched as the half-time entertainment during a high-profile football game. The Canadian band have been booked to appear at the nationally-televised Thanksgiving game between the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers on November 24. But thousands have come out in support of an online campaign to have them replaced. The Change.org petition reads: "Do we really want the rest of the US to associate Detroit with Nickelback? Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback? "Does anyone even like Nickelback? Is this some sort of ploy to get people to leave their seats during half-time to spend money on alcoholic beverages and concessions? "This is completely unfair to those of us who purchased tickets to the game. At least the people watching at home can mute their TVs." Supporter Robert Jones says: "As a professional music producer, engineer, songwriter and lifelong Lions fan, I am disgusted with the choice of Nickelback as a representation of music and culture in Detroit. "Our city is famous for the creation of an entire genre: Motown. Not to mention very strong hip-hop, DJ, and rock and roll scenes. "Nickelback's music doesn't even reflect a musical genre that has ever been popular in the city. It is not rock and roll, its a nasty hybrid of the worst manufactured music on the planet." Lions fan Scott Brown says: "I am a 30-plus year season ticket holder with a vow never to be seen at a Nickelback show. I shouldn't have to choose between the Lions and Nickelback." But the band have a strong following in Motor City, which has a history of adopting rock bands before the rest of the US. Local radio boss Doug Podell tells Freep: "They broke out of here, they've been extremely popular here, and I think they've sold out pretty much every show here since the beginning. "Rock audiences ought to be happy about these guys they're one of the few rock acts left that can still play a halftime show. There aren't many of that stature anymore. "It doesn't matter how vocal the elite 1% gets about it. Detroit loves its mainstream rock, and more so than other cities." Thanks for the report to RockNewsDesk.com.

Not to be the douche, but Nickelback didn't hit the mainstream until about 2000, and that song was about 2005. Nothing 90's there

Newsflash: The new King of Pop, Justin Beiber, has now been signed for the Detriot show! Yes, it could get a lot worse.

I have nothing against Nickelback, and given that they sell out stadium tours, means more people like them then are prepared to admit to it. However, for a city such as Detroit with such a Musical heritage, a Canadian rock band are a little out of place, I see what they are getting at. People need to stop hating Nickelback, they would go away if no one bought their music, but apparently millions do, if you don't like them put something else on!!

Just because someone likes them doesn't mean they don't suck. Nickleback has no musical integrity and really aren't that talented. For them it's not about the art and the music, it's about getting laid and making money which really p***** me off.

Fans rioted because Metallica didn't show up. In Detroit, they'll riot because Nickleback did show up!

In his defense, it'd be pretty easy to mistake one of their songs for another.

To saya band playing to make money pisses you off is kind of an insult to the band themselves. For most bands that you know, and probably love, it's their job. It HAS to make money for them to keep doing it, or they'll end up failing and have to give up music entirely. So the whole, making money makes you a sellout, thing, is just totally wrong. That being said, I despise Nickelback, and know for a fact that a bunch of drunk football fans will throw every obscene object they can find at them. Bad move.

Nothing against Nickelback, as the first comment said.. It's sad that it's "cool" to hate them. I'd rather you apologized for Beiber and Celine Dion

I agree that they probably werent the best choice but to say these things about them is a little harsh. THey are good musicians. They have sold millions of records so must be doing something right. I personally like Nickelback and although their lyrical quality has dipped severly on the last 2 albums, All The Right Reasons is one of the best sounding albums i have in my collection. I like to say i have a diverse music taste ranging from classical music and guitar to things like Dimmu Borgir. End of rant

The ~27k that signed this so far (myself included) make up about half of the capacity of Ford Field. I'd say that's significant. This makes me even prouder to be a Detroiter and Lions fan, GO LIONS!!! Also +1 to Ted Nugent playing halftime lol.

all i have to say is that nickelback is proabably gonna do way better than the black eyed peas at the superbowl.

halftime shows always suck. which is why nickelback is perfect for the halftime show. the reason he says they are one of the only bands out there that can still play a halftime show is because its true. nickelback is the only rock band out there that is bad enough to deserve an NFL halftime performance. the good rock bands out there today can't play halftime shows because they are not necessarily radio friendly and ford field might run the risk of scaring the seniors in the audience. that being said, i would love to see some SOAD or Metallica in the middle of a great Detroit Lions victory. haha

It baffles me why people care so much about Nickleback doing it for the money and sex. What's the difference between you doing something shitty for the rewards (however minimal) compared to them doing what they choose for the returns. Plus, it's a little half time show, it's not going to ruin your life or physically harm you. Get a life and something to occupy you rather than fanboy hating on bands your jealous of. By the way, I'm not a Nickleback fan, but they are fueled by a fan base, even if it doesn't include you.

I'll second that. As for the comment about them writing music, Song writing isn't really song writng if all you do is write the same song over and over again.

this is crap. i respect this band for the bullshit it has to put up with. honestly if they play i hope they rock the **** out and have a good time just to spite the tossers.

The people at change.org are so far up their own asses it isn't even funny. It may have started out as a valid tool for sparking interest in noble causes, but now it's just a sounding board for any hipster who wants to bitch about something.

this doesnt make sense to me. I have been to 5 lions games, and will be going to another on November 20th. the music is ALWAYS terrible, at least to me or some one else. you do not go to a nfl game to hear a good 2 songs at half time. also, represent your city? ok, who is better that would play it? kid rock? bob seger? i know there are a ton of bands from detroit, but who has the popularity and is willing to do the setup and has the lack of integrity to play a half time show for a nfl game? alice cooper comes to mind, but he would never do it. he has better things to do. i for one, thoroughly enjoy nickelback for what they are. i dont put their albums on repeat or even hear them often for that matter, but when they come on i see the benefits. they are a solid rock band. manufactured? jesus, in an age where drums are replaced and guitar tones are cut up and 90% of vocals are autotuned, its accepted. but for kroeger to write, record, tour, all on his own, under his own company still owner the rights to his songs, give the man some credit. represent your city? come on. i gaurantee out of the 65 000 people that place sits, at least 30 000 people like them. end of story.

Maybe Nickelback was the best band the sorry ass Detroit Lions could get

Music is subjective. So everyone that thinks Nickelback is good, well that's their opinion and they have the right to like them. Everyone and the majority of people whom dislike the band can also do so, withtheir own opinions. So don't go around telling people that they are tone deaf or can't like Nickelback because hey, I appreciate what he did for the guitar but don't like Randy Rhoads. But I'm not going to say your tone deaf for liking him. Get over it. Nickelback have plenty of decent songs.

I don't hate Nickelback 'cause it's cool. I hate Nickelback because I watched an interview with Chad Kroeger after 'How you remind me' came out. He basically said that the song was so well received that he was just going to keep replicating that song. That's probably why everything they've put out since has been pointless musical pablum aimed at the dumbest people possible. So no, I don't hate them cause it's 'cool', I just have reason to not respect them in any way shape or form. That and because they suck industry c**k.

Wow @ the radio boss saying that anyone who doesn't like Nickelback is in the "elite 1%", as if not liking Nickelback necessarily means that you sit around all day listening to classical music or something. Pretty sure more than 1% of the earth's population hates Nickelback, let alone 1% of the US or Detroit

omg who the hell cares?! If this 30 year season ticket holder doesn't want to see them then go take a fat dump for the 15 minute intermission and grab a beer and they'll be gone when you get back..people need to chill the hell out with this band. Obviously there's people who want to see them so let em be! So what, they make pop music to get money and get laid..isn't that the point?! at the end of the day their bottom line is millions and yours is not so they win.

Alright, I'm asking a real question here; why do so many people show so much hate towards Nickelback? It seems like at times they get more hate than justin bieber. I know people have different musical tastes, and im not saying that everyone should like them, but it seems like there a significant number of people who absolutely despise them and I don't really see a motive for this other than disliking their music. Is there some other reason that I don't know about or do people really just hate their music that much? I really am having trouble understanding
    jacobdubya
Many people have mentioned that it has become cool to hate Nickelback. It seems like the trend on UG now is to defend Nickelback, even by people who don't like them. Forget that, they suck and I hated them before it was cool to do so. So I'm going to continue hating them. Thanks.

I wouldn't want Nickelback to represent the image of my city.

I'm convinced that half of the commenters here now believe that Nickelback is playing the SuperBowl halftime show.

OF COURSE they're the halftime show the first year that the Lions are doing awesome. Get Alice to do the halftime show, FFS.
    dullsilver_mike
I never cared about Nickleback's reasons for making music or the way they presented themselves. I just always hated their songs which made me laugh when they were supposed to be serious, and pissed me off when they were supposed to make me laugh. That and Kroeger's voice. Anyone who doesn't hate every sound coming out of his mouth doesn't have ears.
    JPScralatchtica
OK, first off, if you're going to a football game, you're not going for the halftime show, so why give a f**k? Secondly, I'm very happy to see a rock band playing that is not on some form of a reunion tour; think about the superbowl (the who, springsteen, petty, the stones, mccartney, the list goes on...). And the Black Eyed Peas sounded horrible earlier this year. Finally, at least we know that Nickelback sounds good live. They do! That dude has an amazing voice! I'm not even a fan of theirs. I think they just happen to make very "cookie cutter" rock songs...not my thing, but they in no way deserve the amount of hate that they receive! Focus that energy elsewhere! Form your own band and maybe one day you'll be good enough to have as many haters as Nickelback.

I understand where the Detroit fans are coming from. It's not so much the style of Nickleback, but where they are from. You have plenty of very talented Musicians( and i'm including Eminem in that category) that could showcase what Detroit has to offer to the vast majority of American, but instead you get a Canadian band with no ties to the city.
    JSmith38
I laughed at the petition. What's 20,000 people anyway? 1/3 of the people that will be there? Maybe even less of a ratio? TBH if I were Nickelback and saw this I wouldn't show up to the gig anyway. Props to Nickelback's success but my god they suck balls.

i really liked nickelback when they came out. plus they were jammed down our throats on the radio/tv. then didnt like them anymore. then i just watched a concert of theirs that was on palladia. i was very impressed and mad respect for them. they put on a show, can play their instruments well, and there were tons of boobs. anytime there are boobs exposed at a show you know you have "made it"
