Guitarist Bill Kelliher was asked on the idea of Mastodon members releasing solo albums similarly to how members of KISS presented their solo recordings back in '78.
As you may or may not know, each of the four members of KISS released a self-titled solo album on September 18, 1978.
Anyhow, Bill said on the Metal Sucks Podcast about the whole idea (transcribed by UG):
"I would love to do that, I think that would be super fuckin' cool. I love The Melvins and KISS came up with the idea with their solo records; I think it would be really cool.
"I've been trying to kinda work on [solo material] with my own personal studio that I have - it's just that, you know, time!
"You need time to do that, and there's just not enough time in the world - it all boils down to that. When can I find the time to do that? I barely have the time to do Mastodon."
Asked on which musical direction he'd take on that hypothetical solo record, Bill replied:
"I think it might be all over the place, because I kind of tend to write [how I'm feeling at the moment].
"I'd probably do something easy like a punk-rock record, maybe with some weird prog in the middle of it.
"I don't know... I'd like to just make an ambient record with weird sounds and with all sorts of different stuff! I like a lot of pop-punk sensibilities, you know. Old-school stuff."
