Bloc Party May Lose Drummer

According to Nme.com, drummer Matt Tong has been sparking rumours that he may quit Bloc Party altogether. Earlier this year, singer/guitarist Kele Okereke stated the band will be going on a hiatus after their current tour. Tong told BBC Subculture he would rather make it a long-term change than just a short break. "I definitely don't think this will be the last you'll hear of the people who make up Bloc Party," he said. "As for me, I don't know, I wouldn't mind trying something else for a while." But despite such a statement, Tong made it clear he hopes the band's upcoming hiatus will help them re-energize themselves and become more focused on music. "We definitely need to have a break and gain a bit of perspective on life outside of the band," he said. "Hopefully if we do reconvene at some point in the future we'll be refreshed and have so many ideas to bring to what it is we do." At the moment, Bloc Party are wrapping up select dates in the U.K. with their last show scheduled for November 19 at Club Quattro in Osaka, Japan.

damn, i don't blame him if he did quit. if i were him i wouldn't like doing those newer techno beats so much. if the band goes back to their old pop/rock direction, i'd be so happy.

The cock-faces ****ing cancelled here. Paid for a ticket and whatnot, and they god damn cancelled.

Music is music and news stories relevant to music are posted, regardless of genre, stop complaining. If people's opinions piss you off that you look past that, much like you have pissed off me, don't come here than.

Wow. Complete and utter misunderstanding of what he said. He said he'd love to experiment with different things while the band are on hiatus. Since when does that mean he's quitting!?

Is that really relevant? There's pretty much none of that going on in this article....

Whatever you think of their three albums, the one thing that stays constant over all of them is the quality of Matt's drumming. I think he's a big part of their sound and it'd be a real pity to see him leave. But if he does he can always join my band.

You couldn't get a refund? Checked.

As some other people have said, he's just saying that the other 3 members may come back as Bloc Party, but he might not be with them.

i would take that to mean that he thinks that everyone in the band will remain musically active, and then explains that his plans are open. he never says he wants to 'quit'. besides, technically he is one of the people who make up bloc party. he says that hes not sure that the band will get back together. a band not getting back together after a hiatus is completely different than 'quitting a band' so yeah, i continue to palm my face

It's not greatly relevent no. Just wound up with the people that populate this site. Probably because I'm getting older.

I'm not a big fan of bloc party personally. but i can't see them splitting any time soon. they're too big now and are close enough to stick together

You kinda contradicted yourself there basically insulting him for getting pissed at others opinions but at the same time you got pissed off at his opinion (although I can't really blame you seeing as it was kind of sterotypical) :/.

Now I wish I've seen these guys live. Saw a clip of them on tv and they're an awesome live band....plus the first time I heard them, his drumming was what stuck out the most. Great drummer!

He won't leave I won't let him. He would be a void that the band couldn't fill if he left. They are such an awesome live band
    Novacane...
loved silent alarm, but it's been downhill since there. not that the other two albums have been bad, silent was just top quality though. and yeah love matts beats. would be a shame but not the end of bloc party.

This article is fairly annoying, as matt is clearly saying he just needs a break from bloc party. They've been touring since the E.P. was release in 2004, with no real breaks, I'd imagine they do need a break, and maybe just from bloc party and each other, Russell's working on pin me down, Kele's helping a friend write songs and writing short stories, and Gordy's probably just going to be a proper father figure to his daughter for a year or two. Matt says nothing that hint's at quitting permanently from bloc party in this article.

Is it me or does he look like mclovin from superbad on the front page?

I'm not a huge fan of Bloc Party, but he is a pretty talented drummer. In fact he's probably the best thing about the band.

    Bozjoarmstrong
for me, the most talented member of that band. Prefer the first two albums to Intimacy though, its probably best they have a hiatus.
    CrowLord
really, all this is saying that when they are on hiatus the other members might have some other musical projects on the go, but Tong won't do that people take stuff so out of proportion
    ZeGuitarist
I've always been a big fan of Bloc Party, and I particularly liked Kele (for his unusual voice) and Matt (extremely talented drummer). Although I was hugely disappointed by Intimacy, I hope Matt stays in the band, and I especially hope that this short term "hiatus" doesn't turn into a breakup. I'd hate never seeing Bloc Party record any more new material.

I'd love it if Bloc Party stayed together, but the guys are all starting to get married and stuff... I could understand if they change style drastically or quit altogether
    gallagher2006
Tong's the best member in the band...and probably the best drummer around at the moment. He's amazingly intriquite and accurate.
    soupdragon
Was really worried when I read the headline, not so worried now lol. All he said is that they're gonna have an extended hiatus. Which is fine, as someone said above they haven't stopped at all since silent alarm was released.

wow bloc party headlining the news?!. An indie band? A non metal band in the main news? I thought i'd never live to see this day !!
    Glennjoe
He's a great drummer, saw them at the Victoria hall last week and caught his drumstick, cant believe my local music programme subculture, which has plugged my band a couple of times, has cropped up on UG!
