Blondie Reveal They Turned Down an Offer to Perform in Sochi

Blondie have revealed they rejected an offer to perform after a medal ceremony during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The legendary New York band tweeted a photo of the offer to play in front of a crowd of 25,000 people at the Red Rocks festival next week (February 13), on the Sochi Medals Plaza. But the group turned down the invite to play the 45 minute set on human rights grounds.

A host of stars have already voiced their objections against the games being held in Russia, on the basis of their controversial anti-gay laws, with the likes of Cher, Madonna and Lady Gaga all speaking out against the event.

The 2014 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony took place last night (February 7), where t.A.T.u performed alongside the Russian Police Choir, with the latter covering Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky'.

Meanwhile, it was announced this week that Blondie are to be crowned Godlike Geniuses at this year's NME Awards. One of the most iconic groups of the past four decades, the band will pick up the award in person and also perform live at the NME Awards 2014 with Austin, Texas on Wednesday February 26 at O2 Academy, Brixton, London.

"It feels madness and Godlike and thunderbolts and throwing things down on the masses and obliterating whole sections of humanity with my guitar," Chris Stein said. "We're all very happy to be acknowledged in any way," Debbie Harry added.

Nothing ironic about tatu, a russian duo known for portraying lesbianism, performing at the Opening Ceremony in Russia then

Yeah, but it was a publicity stint, the aren't really lesbians. They actually hold up machismo, rather than vindicate LGBT's.

Or they are lesbians and were obliged to say they weren't.

Naw, it's pretty well documented that their manager created the whole "lolita lesbian" concept, school girl outfits and all. Apparently the girls come from really poor backgrounds, which he totally exploited (I remember reading he made one of 'em sleep with him when she was 15 or something, just above the Russian age of consent at the time). Terrific guy, really And boy did it work, 'cos it sure wasn't the music that got 'em on MTV. Of course they had their big break way before the whole anti-gay law sh*tstorm (really Russia, Tatu? Why not have the Vengaboys and Ace of Base perform as well?) Still, I don't think people would've tolerated a faux dude on dude pop duo. So yeah, I agree with Cyclonus: the double standard is baffling

"...the band will pick up the award in person and also perform live at the NME Awards 2014 with Austin, Texas on Wednesday February 26 at O2 Academy, Brixton, London." They're performing with Austin, Texas? Is anyone else totally confused by that? Anyway, good on them for turning Sochi down. The IOC is corrupt as ****, I can't believe the games are actually going ahead this year.

Yeah, as a resident of Austin, I'm totally confused by that. NME calls it "The NME Awards with Austin, Texas," but it's in London. There's nothing "Austin" about it.

I would have taken the offer and made it the most gayest 45 minutes set of all time. Rainbows, spandex, David Lee Roth's huge inflatable 'microphone' dick - you name it ...

    Oh, for ****'s sake! It's not an "anti-gay law", it's a law prohibiting gay-propaganda.
    cellofreak42
Actually, it kind of is anti-gay. Extremely so.
    Psycho Pigeon
'extremely so' why are there so many pessimists on the left? Have to exaggerate everything.
    maowcat
Shut the **** up about the left you moron, if you think the left is so evil how about the right wing nut jobs that caused the biggest financial crisis, loss of jobs and money in known history. There are evils on both sides, but the right dominantly has far more wrong doers in todays society than the left (the left doesn't even have ground in most western society's). Are the "communists" that run your country responsible for your failed war on drugs? War on terror? Quick fact for you, Obama is about as right wing as politicians come, on an economic scale, which is where the real results come into play. BTW i don't align myself to any political spectrum, as it is to complex of an issue to divide into two spectrums...

There's nothing to exaggerate. Innocent people are being beaten in the streets and the police do nothing.

What is defined as gay-propaganda? Bashing homosexuals is legal on the other hand.
    Epi g-310
And basically being gay is "gay propaganda" by Russia's standards, so it's enforced as an anti-gay law.
    WowSuchGuitar
that law does not restrain gay people from shagging each other in the ass, in what way is it homophobic?
    Psycho Pigeon
No, it's not. Beating up gay people happens everywhere. READ the law and the statistics rather than getting information from your lefty propaganda blogs.

That's actually pretty cool. Putin is a bellend. (Sorry Dannym95)
    stiltsdajumz
If I recall correctly it was you that used that word the first time to begin with. KILL HIM WITH FIRE AND PITCHFORKS!

It's a misinterpretation, it' actually outlawing anti-heterosexual propaganda of any form. Gays are allowed to be gays. There are actually rare but extremist gays that are claiming and propagating the idea that being strait is a bad thing. It's ironic but it does happen and this is what Russia wants to prevent.
    FlameOn
Those saying it's not anti-gay are idiots, frankly. The law was created under the principle that gays and paedophiles are linked. Putin has singled out gays, telling them to stay away from children, as if they're a much more particular danger to children than heterosexuals. It's disgusting. Vigilante groups assaulting and kidnapping gays are allowed to post their videos of their exploits on public social media sites while police do nothing about it even when their faces are clear. TBH I think more should be done about punishment of vigilante's and better protection from police - that would be more helpful than just axing the law (but of course, just the law is all people are focusing on D=). Putin's not done a thing to counteract the increase of violence over there. Blondie, Cher, whoever turned down offers to perform there had good justification for doing so. Sorry to get all political =p
    Psycho Pigeon
err what? Maybe they should actually read the law in question, it affects Hollywood instead of actual gay people. The liberals are so desperate to jump on bandwagons.
