Bruce Dickinson Loses Job

It's a good thing Bruce Dickinson has a sensible rock 'n' roll career to fall back on. The Iron Maiden frontman had been moonlighting as a senior pilot and marketing director for Astraeus Airlines, but that company has gone belly up, having experienced "lower-than-expected levels of business" over the summer, the Daily Mail reports. The company also failed to secure sufficient contracts for the coming winter and was hit with "extremely bad luck" on the technical front. Dickinson learned of the airline's demise while flying 250 vacationers home to Manchester, England, from Saudi Arabia. Such routes were typical for Astraeus, which would lease jets to major carriers and often ferried British travelers home from countries in turmoil. "It is small comfort to those affected and impacted, I realise, but Astraeus comprised a fantastic team who did a fantastic job - quite possibly the best team in their aviation business sector," CEO Hugh Parry said. Dickinson called on Astraeus in 2008 when he needed a plane to fly Maiden around the world on the "Somewhere Back In Time" tour. Piloting a Boeing 757 dubbed "Ed Force One" - a reference to the enduring group's mascot, Eddie - the heavy metal legend flew his bandmates and crew to more than 30 countries. "The reliability was superb, and the outcome exceeded the band's wildest expectations," Dickinson said. "A unique airline, for a unique experience. Astraeus Airlines made it happen!" Thanks for the report to Noisecreep.com.

I honestly hope he gets another airline job, because it sounds like he enjoys flying... Best of luck to you Bruce!

Poor Bruce. It's not his fault, the company just went belly up. Plane and simple.

Bruce Dickinson leads the life that millions of teenagers all over the world want. I mean who wouldn't want to fly their heavy metal band around the world in an airplane with a zombie decal on the cockpit?

Bet that's a bit of a blow to him really. He did seem a keen and capable, as much as useful, pilot.

He could just fall back onto his olympic fencing career... Wonder if he'll be entering London 2012

Hopefully he'll get bored and do another world tour with Maiden flying.

Weird you guys forgot that he also can fall back on being a teacher in the art of fencing! he's is pretty good in that too!

I never thought about it before, but I just realised how awesome it would be to be sitting on a plane waiting for takeoff, and fnding out that Bruce Dickenson was piloting.

Its actually on the Vertical stabilizer. Not the cockpit. Know your airplane parts you uncultured f*ck.

Oh my god when i read the headline i thought he had been fired from iron maiden.....relief

Terrible news. Ed Force One was the key to so many countries finally being able to get Maiden gigs after so many years. With all the potential of new places they could play in the coming years, this is the worst time for this to happen. Saw the final show on all 3 Ed Force One legs of a tour, and it was a really magical feeling knowing what they'd done in the weeks prior, and of course actually seeing Ed Force One. I really hope for the sake of Maiden fans worldwide that another airline will sponsor Maiden to continue with this, after seeing the incredible amount of positive press it's generated, and how much it helps the band reach new audiences.

Of course he can always fall back on his career as a renowned music producer with merits such as Blue yster Cults "Don't fear the reaper".

Somehow I think he'll get by...shame if this means the end of Bruce Air as well though. Hopefully he can get a job with another airline...not like he's lacking an impressive CV.

Eddie is more than a "zombie decal" Eddie is a way of life

Ok guys, when everyone uses the same "Shit, how's he gonna survive" joke, it gets old.

I thought it he had been fired or had left Iron Maiden when i saw the title, probably not a coincidence either. That sucks, no more Ed Force one from the sounds of it, that means it will be much harder if not impossible for them to tour in a lot of the countires they visited during the somewhere back in time tour. Ah well, at least Maiden are still fine.

He was managing director (or something similar) iirc? When I heard he flew the last flight I thought it was a privelage or something and not just that he happened to be doing it at the time! It can't have been good for their books (publicity though) but it's good of them to fly 'rescue' flights and such to pick up stranded people after other airlines have messed up in the past. Pretty sure he'll find another flight job, he's put enough work into the industry with flying, documentaries etc and it brings publicity (and I'm sure customers ) to an airline he signs with. It will hurt the tour's though if they can't get another plane.

Oh my god this is the best comment I've read in a LONG while. You are just excellent.

On a wing and a prayer, he'll successfully continue his Maiden voyage in the music industry.

No. You definetely are alone about this. The rest of us don't have unhealthy obsessions with proper news headlines.

If I hadn't already known he'd been made redundant with the airline I'd have murdered UG for the blatantly misleading title. As usual.

You misinterpreted my post. I was saying that I doubt I'm the only one who interpreted the title to mean that Bruce had left Iron Maiden (and I think I saw a couple other posts saying similar), and then commented on how I felt about my interpretation of the news. Not that I was actually brought to tears by any means - it was simply a hyperbole - but I certainly wasn't happy about it. I didn't mean that everyone who interpreted it the way I did was in an emotional state over it. Your misinterpretation of my post may have been my fault, in which case I will point out the irony that my post complaining about the ambiguous nature of the headline was itself ambiguous. Still, no need to be a dick.

couple of things, I don't think it might be that easy for him to get another job...imagine he'll have to leave the job for extended periods of time if he tours when he tours. The other thing, I wonder how many time people have been on a plane listening to maiden when the captain is talking pre-flight and miss the "hello, I'm Bruce Dickson! scream for me business class!!!!"

I've flown with that Airline more than once I wonder if Bruce was the Pilot?

    He was kidding...

thankfully I already knew he was a pilot. It's obvious Ultimate Guitar was once again tried to create a misleading title that would make some people think he left the band. Thanks, idiots.

I originally thought he did it as a publicity stunt. Aparrently not so it seems. Damn.
    PsiGuy60
Well, that sucks. I mean, it's not like he still has a huge income from being a rockstar or someth... Oh wait, he does.
