Devin Townsend: 'I Never Liked Prog'

Devin Townsend talked prog stuff, explaining to uDiscover Music (transcribed by UG):

"I never liked prog. But if it ultimately allows me to sustain myself financially - to be called prog - I'm totally down to it.

"I loved Motorhead. The first song I ever learned was 'Motorhead' by Motorhead.

"But because I didn't get laid when I was in high school, I learned how to do sweep arpeggios, and I think that's now how come I'm on a prog stage, because on some level i have facility to do articulate arpeggios.

"I think that also goes back to neurosis of it all. It's all tied to my inability to pee, and it's not my prostate.

"I think think that prog music is really hard to... But it's interesting that prog as a genre is starting to incorporate things that aren't...

"Its definition is like, 'Is Not Katy Perry' more than anything else. So I'll take it. Because before it was [more complicated]. But now it's just like, "OK, you've got more than one verse."

"But because I didn't get laid when I was in high school, I learned how to do sweep arpeggios." - brilliant
He's been telling that joke since 2009, I guess it never gets old...
That's how you now Dev's a legit dude. He'll tell a story ten years apart, exactly the same way. XD
Or he just has the same 5 jokes...
Well he's a musician above being a comedian. The reason people like him for his humor is mainly the fact that he doesn't take himself too seriously, which is generally a like-able feature for a person to have.

I didn't get laid in school and I still can't play sweeping arpeggios properly...
I did get laid in highschool... and it's about the same time that I hit a brick wall trying to learn how to sweep pick... cause and effect.
Sweeped arpeggios is the one variety of arpeggios that will not get you laid.
God, if only i hadn't gotten laid in high school. The weirdest things can come back to bite you in the ass!
I'm really glad the whole sweep picking phase died off. It was obnoxious. Advanced tapping has taken over, though, and it's almost equally obnoxious at this point.
"Its definition is like, 'Is Not Katy Perry' more than anything else." That's what I'm loving about what prog has evolved into. "Progressive metal" is becoming such a broad term that I don't even think it truly exists in a meaningful way anymore, except in the cases of the existing bands from the start of the genre and bands that directly copy that style (Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Haken, Circus Maximus, Pain of Salvation, etc.), but it's become this much more general thing that's included a lot of bands that sound nothing like that, from Mastodon to Meshuggah to Devin Townsend to Periphery... I'm just liking that metal in general is becoming more about good musicianship, even if some bands can go a little overboard with it.
Usually, a chick that compliments you on your playing after a show, they're not interested too much in how well you sweep pick but what else you can do with those fingers haha. Only kidding. But, more and more chicks nowadays are picking up the guitar and drums - so who knows.
Eh? The guy claiming that he got laid and learnt how to do sweeping arpeggios hasn't arrived yet?
