Ronnie James Dio's widow Wendy Dio commented on KISS' Gene Simmons filing a legal application to trademark the popular devil's horns hand gesture, telling The Wrap:

"To try to make money off of something like this is disgusting.

"It belongs to everyone; it doesn't belong to anyone. It's a public domain; it shouldn't be trademarked.

"It's a joke, it's just crazy. It's laughable, I think, quite honestly.

"I think he's made a complete fool of himself. It's disgusting; what does he want?"

Among prominent people who reacted to Gene's actions is also Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue, who sarcastically tweeted:

"Although Gene Simmons will tell you that he invented it; but then again Gene invented breathing, and shoes, and everything you know."

"public domain" is a copyright issue; not a trademark issue. Her sentiment is correct though - the devil horns are generic and are not used as a trademark. But this was always just a publicity stunt and everyone has fallen for it.

That's what I was going to say. He just wanted to show up in the news feed again.

Kiss were the ones selling air guitar strings, right? That + this just makes them look like some cash grab trying to milk every last penny.

What a cash grabbing motherfucker. Fuck Off Gene, you and your Gene Simmons empire.

There was only one thing authentic about KISS and that Ace's massive 70s hard rock tone. And it looks like all that Botox has finally seeped into the space in Gene Simmons head that used to house whatever passed for his brain.....

not only did Gene Simmons NOT invent the devil horns, Dio was the first one to admit that he didn't invent them either (see: Metal: A Headbangers Journey). On top of that, Gene Simmons is a huge piece of shit.

Gene Simmons lacks integrity and common sense, he is in love with his own legend, a legend that because of bullshit like this deteriorates year after year. He should start caring about how people will remember him and his legacy, not his musical acomplishments, but his personal ones... does he actually need more $?

Are people really not seeing that this is a clear publicity stunt by Gene Simmons? He's done this before, every time people start forgetting about him he does SOMETHING to make people remember that he still exists.

At worst, he's trademarking Spider-Man's web shooter gesture. I say go ahead, that's between him and Disney.

Fuck them both...I hope him and Disney go broke suing and countersuing each other.

different class of goods/services. His application is defective but not for this reason.

I guess Gene doesn't realize that Coven did the horns all the way back in 1969.

I loved Kiss as a child, LOVED them. Kiss is not a metal band and even so, he's giving the "I love you" sign.  Go back to bed Gene.

I love Gene Simmons. He tries, oh he tries He's kinda like a cartoon character. I'll miss him once he's gone.

He would try to trademark air and people would still be stupid enough to think he's serious about it.

Gene is the ultimate troll.  I've actually grown to respect his business savvy.  Why pay for press when they'll gladly give it to you for free.

Eh, if this kind of constant negative attention is really what he's after then he's doing a good job I guess. Of course he's completely completely degrading his public image and legacy but I'm sure he's more worried about the profitability.

At least you get it.  For the record, Gene has been making this claim for decades.
