Download Festival 2013: First Headliner To Be Revealed Tonight
8
Download Festival has announced that they will confirm the identity of their first headline act for next year's festival later on today. The annual metal festival, held at Donnington, will reveal the news at 6pm tonight. Iron Maiden seem to be the band fans online are suggesting will be revealed, however others are tipping Green Day, Paramore or Slipknot. Posting on Twitter, the festival wrote: "First headliner for Download 2013 will be announced at 6pm TONIGHT". Download 2012 was a huge success with headline slots from Black Sabbath, Metallica and The Prodigy. The identity of Download's first headliner is currently unknown but rest assured, there will be no hologram revival of a dead legend. Despite seeing the huge success of Tupac's return to Coachella earlier this year, Download organiser Andy Copping has ruled out the possibility of reviving a metal legend through similar technology at his event. Speaking to Metal Hammer about the chances of doing something similar at the annual metal festival, Copping said: "Absolutely not. If you're going to a live show, you want to see live bands with proper interaction. You're not going to see cartoons. I think the whole thing with Tupac and Dre and Snoop at Coachella was great, but it was a moment in time". Adding: "Why would you want to go and see a f---ing hologram? It doesn't sit comfortably with me at all. I don't get it". Thanks to Gigwise for the report.

Rammstein confirmed for the 16th. Iron Maiden and Bullet For My Valentine are the other two headliners, you heard it here first folks

Am I the only one still wondering why the prodigy was a headliner last year ?
    LaughingWater2
I agree That Opeth Should Of really been on the main stage, Say what you want about the prodigy but i didnt meet one person that night who didnt enjoy them although if was up to me i'd have Porcupine Tree Headlining

The Download Festival is a three day rock music festival held annually at Donington Park, England The Download Festival is a three day rock music festival Download Festival is a rock festival

The Prodigy called themselves a Dance-Rock band Back in the early 90s. Dance-Rock Is Still Rock!
    My Last Words
.. Yeah and korn didn't consider themselves nu-metal either. Prodigy: Electronic, period.
    LaughingWater2
How about Rammstein then? Should they be at download even though they're partially Industrial?
    badtaste87
you cant deny they have rock influences which is clearly heard in their music. some of their songs even include samples of rock music. take voodoo people for instance that has the riff from very ape - nirvana
    My Last Words
Sure, but those are just influences.. Minor elements. And samples don't really say that much. That's my opinion bout it tho : )
    LaughingWater2
You Might aswell Say that Opeth shouldnt play Download because they're a Prog-Metal band not a rock band. i agree that they could of had someone way better but even the metalheads i know loved the prodigy.
    My Last Words
Honestly, The prodigy has some really good stuff.. I'd love to see em live, but for a Rock/metal festival I'd rather have a more rock/metalish act on the bill.

The real reason was The Prodigy headlined was because i think Andy Copping Wanted to Broaden the Horizens. Its a good thing but also a bad thing, theres a limit to how broad it should be, i'd say that having 1 band thats from a slightly different genre makes its stand out more but if you have 3 or 4 bands from a different genre it would ruin the contrast. Prodigy have strong Influences in rock so its not too bad. I wouldnt mind them headlining the second stage again but i do think they could of got a more metal headliner but you can at least see why they headlined, because alot of people really enjoy them. there shouldnt be rules on Rock music at all. anyone with Distorted Guitars, heavy drums and a fire in they're heart are still rock in some form.
    MetalHermit
my list would be metallica,slayer,megadeth,p.o.d.,korn,iron maiden, slipnot, and black sabbath.
    badtaste87
that would be an amazing lineup was never really that into p.o.d but they i dont mins them. i'd have to add AC/DC they are top of my list in terms of bands i havent seen yet
    guitarist41
Download would have to need to have at least 5 bands that I love before I'd travel several hundred miles, and deal with those portable toilet things and drunk pricks.
    cyclonus
Sonispshere should take note - Announce your headliners way in advance, not four months before the poxy festival and long after the other festivals announce their's. That said, it would need something good to beat Maiden and Rammstein
    craaig
It would take something good to beat it - after all, Maiden and Rammstein are a tried and tested format.. at a Sonisphere Festival that actually happened!
    chrisvasco23
God, ive wanted to go to download ever since i heard something like that takes place. let alone play it! wish America would get this kind of festival.
    LaughingWater2
I cant believe How many people in England complain about the line up every year. Seriously I love going to download, some people just dont know lucky they are.
    LaughingWater2
Download is becoming less of a metal festival but its not necessarily a bad thing, if it became a Pop Punk and emo festival then you could really complain but think about it, Every Years its had A really good Variety of Prog, Rock and Punk aswell as the usual Thrash, Heavy and Death Metal Bands, I dont care if every band isn't Metal Aslong as the headliners are mostly metal i couldnt care less. After all you really cant get more metal than black sabbath headlining! As a huge Prog fan, i enjoy the variety because the festival always puts on someone risky thats not really part of the metal scene

I really haven't been following Download Festival for a while until this year, when I was really excited about Sabbath and Metallica... and I dunno if I'll care about this new one after seeing "Green Day", "Paramore" and "Slipknot".
    MetalRock4ever
Well I'm looking forward to Slipknot, not really "Black Sabbath". All these old bands (Metallica, etc.) are great, no doubt about that, but they are played too much... Like, when it came to best metal song, it was dominated by just Iron Maiden, Metallica etc. There are other songs out there...
    iommi600
I know, in fact, I hate all this empty idolatry for older bands that people make sometimes. It's just my opinion, really, I tried listening to this new (when it came out) Slipknot album and I couldn't even make it to the end. While I think that the "Mate Feed Kill Repeat" demo is pretty cool though, I doubt they will be playing anything from it live. So...
    MetalRock4ever
I am happy that you're not one of those people who are touchy when it comes to saying stuff against the old bands (unlike those who disliked our comments). MFKR was a good album (Bitchslap and Confessions were good) but some of their stuff from the debut with Taylor has been forgotten. In short, I agree with you completely
    Banandrew
I know that Maiden was officially annonced, i only saw this page after that, but the first comment, about bullet headlining without any announcements, and all these other things (including a fake poster with "liam from red camp" (whoever the hell that is) headlining the firday) annoys me a bit that people can't just be normal and wait and see what's happening
    ProgFripp74
    Just announced, its Maiden -_-
    LaughingWater2
What Else do you want? seriously you cant get any better than Maiden. Im a massive fan of everything from Portishead to King Crimson to Goldie to even Yoshida Brothers but Iron Maiden are one of the best headliner possible for a metal festival
    ProgFripp74
I personally just don't like maiden. I don't hate them, I think they're a good band they just don't appeal to me. Yes they'll draw in crowds but I just wouldn't see them, headliners or not.
    SkepsisMetal
Download this year was ****ing awful. Lineup was great, festival was shit, Copping is a twat who can't organise 5 days in a field.
    JackalUK
Bad weather, massively oversold, poor layout. 2007 was much better as a venue. Better line up this year.
    jpcl
This isn't a rock festival anymore. It's just a selection of random bands. Green Day for a rock festival. This better be a joke.
    jpcl
Actually I'm wrong, it isn't random bands. It's just commercial bands in order to dish out the maximum amount of profit out of these "rock bands". I can't even believe with these choices they managed to think straight for a minute in 2012 and bring a real rock band, Black Sabbath.
    JackalUK
And what kind of line up would you propose?
    jpcl
A line up filled with rock bands, and not a bunch of bands who sound all like an avril lavigne tribute band. We either get these pop/punk rock bands, or the other end of the scale (heavy stuff). Luckily, they managed to get Black Sabbath last year, and this year Iron Maiden(even though I'm not a big fan of them, but they at least make actual music, and not 80% of recent bands coming out who sing a bunch of words so they get recieve their money at the end. What happened to real rock genres? Where's Qotsa, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Kyuss, Strokes, etc. We got new and old generation stuff there, for all ages, for all tastes, without running away from Rock. To be honest, I do sometimes enjoy listening to The Prodigy for example, but to add that to a rock festival is just stupid. It isn't rocket science. If it's a rock music festival, you take bands that do rock, and bands that do music. Some of those meantioned in the article don't do rock, and some don't do music at all.
    jpcl
Might I just add Them Crooked Vultures to my line up list? A trio combo of Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, and no less then Led Zep's bassist, John Paul Jones. Their music is not only wicked and inspiring, but it has so many good vibes going on that the music they pull out is fantastic, yet so different then anything else out today. Best part? If anything, they are even more amazing to watch live, and yes they are a rock band. But some may argue and say that what we need for Download is Green Day, Bullet for my Valentine, etc, so why not just call them? Then we can invite Axl Rose to show up 2 hours late. Only then will we have the world's most senseless music festival.
    baneofmorgoth
I stopped reading when you mentioned the Strokes.
    jpcl
To be honest, not my cup of tea either, but it's a band that even though I'm not that fond of, I still respect it because this is a case of musical tastes, just as I could compare the fact that I'm not a big fan of Satriani or Steve Vai, because their music genres aren't really in the best interests of my musical taste. That doesn't mean I wouldn't consider them great guitarists/musical artists, and so I respect them and their music.
    LaughingWater2
You have no idea do you? Iron Maiden and Rammstein are the best possible headliners and we got them. i dont care if the 3rd headliner is green day or bullet for my valetine because Iron Maiden alone is good enough. This year had Black sabbath, Saxon, Opeth, Metallica, Slash and Anthrax if you dont think thats a good line up then you must be a little bit crazy!
    jpcl
Jesus, it's like talking to a 5 year old. We're talking about the new download festival, because that's what going to come, now what came last year... Now, if you actually think that two bands make it good enough for the whole show to be good, you might as well just say, I don't care if you bring House or electric music to a blues/rock, because after all, we already got one or two bands that are blues... Then again, Hannah Montana is real successful, so hopefully they'll bring her along too. You got your Iron Maiden and Rammstein, your already happy, so you can watch Hannah. I hope she does a duet with Green day. Hopefully the planet won't come to an end.
    LaughingWater2
You need to pull your head out your arse. i really dont care if someone plays house at a blues gig, i couldnt give a **** about what genre someone is. If someones good then they're good, do you think BB King sat down at glastonbury, heard Jay Z and thought "OH God what is this world coming to" No, because real music fans dont go around complaining about bands they hate, they go around talking about bands they like as long as theres still good bands i really couldn't care less who else is playing. Green day arent even playing download and if Hannah Montana did come on stage i'll either bottle her or go to the second stage or the pepsi max tent to see another band, you don't have to watch the bands you dont like. If you dont like the bands that play download altogether then dont watch it, After all you'll only be missing out on bands Like Black Sabbath, Lamb of God, Machine Head, Opeth, Iron Maiden, Porcupine Tree, Tool, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Anthrax, Megadeth, Dream Theatre.
    jpcl
The thing is that a Rock festival is made to have rock bands, as are metal festivals with metal bands, etc. Am I not making sense? After all, if you say it's a rock festival, you want to go there because it has rock bands. It's like going into a car dealership and having a few cars, some dustbins, some carrots and some books for sale. You go to a car dealership to buy A CAR, as you go to a metal festival to hear metal. Once again, we ain't dealing with rocket science here. I'm guessing you must have your head stuck up way further then me, because you can't fight against basic logic.
    LaughingWater2
Im sorry But when was Any of those bands i just mentioned not rock? "Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music" "Punk rock is a rock music genre" "Progressive rock, also known as prog rock, prog-rock or simply prog, is a rock music subgenre" if you think that Iron Maiden and Rammstein are not rock bands then seriously mate i dont know what you want from a rock festival.
    jpcl
Problem is that Downlaod festival is a metal festival, and even though heavy metal is included in the rock genre, rock, punk, and pop aren't included in metal, so yeah, my point stands. And just for the record, Rammstein isn't a rock badn no. heavy metal may be a genre within rock, but that doesn't mean you can include all types of metal genres inside rock. Rammstein is Industrial metal, so it has industrial dance with trash metal mixed up. Your just looking for a fight, and just changing arguements everytime you post. Since your brain got a bit confused, this is about bands like The Prodigy (2012) and Green Day (since so many fans are pointing them out for 2013). Are those rock? There's nothing wrong with The Prodigy's music, as I've said I sometimes hear it, although you can't just bring electronic house bands to a metal festival.
    LaughingWater2
Green day arent going to play download this year i wouldnt listen to rumours like that and seriously im not looking for a argument, i just get fed up with everyone complaining about a festival which we are lucky to have, not every country has festivals like this. the Prodigy and chase and status arent metal and they probably shouldnt of really been headlining (even though they were amazing) they're more dance-rock, which is still a form of rock but not in any traditional sense so although they should of been there, they should of really played the second stage and had a more metal headliner. Rammstein on the other hand are a Neue Deutsche Hrte band which is basicly industrial metal but still according to wikipedia "Neue Deutsche Hrte also known as German electronic metal or dance metal (tanzmetall), is a subgenre of rock music" so i don't mean to argue but of course rammstein are classed as a rock band. I go to download to hear great music and thats what i hear and i can't really complain
    LaughingWater2
I Cba to argue anymore, you can either sit around complaining about the state of the music or enjoy as much of as you can.
