Progressive metal legends Dream Theater have announced that they have chosen a new drummer to replace Mike Portnoy.

Dream Theater Finally Choose New Drummer
0
One of progressive metal's most famous and talented bands, Dream Theater, have always impressed their audience with their ability to seamlessly blend together several genres and styles without sounding forced or pretentious in the process. Instrumental prowess coupled with creative and powerful songwriting made the group successful, but with the departure of drummer Mike Portnoy their future instantly became unclear. After frantically going through countless rigorous auditions, Dream Theater have finally settled on a new a new drummer, someone who the rest of the group feels will be a suitable replacement for Mike Portnoy. Guitarist John Petrucci has announced that the new drummer's name is not going to be released yet. Petrucci (known for playing at a tempo of six billion beats per minute and in time signatures like 69/42) released the following: Hey, everyone. Wanted to quickly let you all know what's been happening lately. I know that the big question is Who is the new Dream Theater drummer?' I also realize that some people are getting frustrated waiting for the news. Well, auditions went great and we do have someone but we are spending some time getting everything in order before making an official announcement. Let me just say that we are all incredibly excited about our choice and just bursting at the seams to let the world know! Really? You couldn't just tell us?! Oh well In other news, Dream Theater will be hitting the studio early next year in January, so we can expect a new album sometime in the near future. Maybe that bit of information will calm down the fans who (once again) just got their hopes up for nothing.

69/42 isn't a COMMON time signature. That is, I don't know of any songs that are written in it, because it's ridiculously frickin' hard. That doesn't actually mean that it's not possible, though.

Learn some theory... Fail on 2 counts: 1, he was talking about Petrucci, and 2, the fact that we know such time signatures don't exist or make sense was part of the point, that's how we know he's exaggerating Petrucci's awesomeness. Don't be so uptight, man.
Actually, I believe this is a reference to a video series called "John Petrucci Psycho Exercises", in which segments of his "Rock Discipline" instructional video are overdubbed with different voice. In these videos, "John Petrucci" makes ridiculous claims such as the whole 69/42 thing. I'm assuming this is because very few people can realistically play his practice exercises anyways...so someone decided to make fun of that. XD

+1 There's a damn good chance it's him since he is doing that jam session with Jordan tomorrow. It'd be cool if they announced it during the session. I'll definitely be watching, should be a pretty cool show.

it is impossible. there's no beat division of a 42nd note. so in that sense it is impossible.

Thomas Lang or Gavin Harrison could do it. That would be a pleasant surprise. Gavin is full time with Porcupine Tree but Thomas doesn't really have a good band that will get him success.

I thought so at first, but he lacks technicality needed for DT's style

I was going to say Meg White but someone beat me to it. I heard Phil Collins is getting the gig.

EDIT: I'm sure they're not playing "hard to get" just because they can. I'm sure if they could tell people, they would, and I'm sure they will as soon as they're able. Calm down. And I don't even like DT, at all.

Why is this news? It's just a rant. And did it never occur to the author that sometimes you can't just say anything you want, because of legal reasons? What if the drummer they chose is in another band, and "getting everything in order" means that they're clearing everything up between labels, and legally transferring a member from one band to another?

This isn't news, we all knew about the record in Jan. Fucking worthless article.

Its got to be Marco Minnemann. Rudess has already announced that bandcrashers gig with him...too convenient?

Why cant they announce it already? jeez. I have a feeling it may be Mike mangini or marco minnemann.
