According to Blabbermouth.net, David Brinn of The Jerusalem Post recently conducted an interview with keyboardist Jordan Rudess of progressive metal giants Dream Theater. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

On former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy's change of mind and request to be reinstated after leaving the band last September:

"Mike wanted to come back after we had gone through all the emotional turmoil and pain of losing a friend, and the effort we went through to get back on our feet. We were well past our recovery phase and had made a commitment to [new Dream Theater drummer] Mike Mangini."

On Portnoy's decision to leave the band he co-founded and led for 25 years:

"His leaving was unbelievable, it was so emotional. He's a close friend of mine and we've been through so much together - it basically brought me to tears. But being a positive person and around guys who love what they're doing, we had to figure out how to move forward."

On Mike Mangini, a former Berklee College of Music teacher and holder of five World's Fastest Drummer records:

"Mike adapted to our world so wonderfully. He's not only a great drummer, but a great guy. He came into the audition and locked in with us and nailed it. We were amazed."

"We were looking for someone who could walk onstage with us and not throw us off in the least, and we found him in Mike. As painful and said as the situation was over not being able to work with Mike Portnoy, life goes on - this kind of thing, unfortunately, happens in bands and we're interested in keeping a positive direction and making really good music. And now, I'm no longer the new guy."

As much as I love Mike Portnoy, I think having someone else in the studio will be good for them.

"And now, I'm no longer the new guy." Ohhhh THAT'S what this is about. What a cock head. Just kidding. I'm not big on Dream Theater but usually I'd be sick of hearing so much about an incident in these headlines. However for this, it's kind of nice. We have a full perspective on what happened now and can't really get mad at one guy or the other guys. At the start everyone was on DT's ass for "not letting him back in" but now we can see and understand why.

I still think Portnoy's kind of a dick. Who the hell leaves a band with Petrucci, Rudess en Myung, some of the best musicians in the world? I'd die if I got the opportunity to play with them. But it's his life.

Just saying, it seems such a waste to throw that away.

I think some of the new songs leaked to youtube, if they are legit, i might be a little concerned for the quality of this project :O Didnt want to spoil it though so just took a quick listen, but didnt sound too exciting imo.

I completely agree. I loved the overall sound of Black Clouds and Silver Linings so maybe that's why I'm not a huge fan. The drums didn't really seem to impress me at all.

They're not legit, man. Check out the DT thread in the 80's Shred/Progressive forum. The uploader is just going out of his way to be proper bellend. On a side, when I first read this I thought "Jerusalem" was some obscure nickname for Jordan! "J.Ruddess-alem", anyone?

Before EVERY Dream Theater album there is always this debate about leaked songs and they are ALWAYS ****ing fake (or more commonly Labrie's solo work). This album is going to be awesome because its Dream Theater and for better or worse they are still amazing musicians.

The leaks are of James Labrie's Mullmuzzler - The song specifically is Venice Burning The other is of John Solo album with MIKE PORTNOY on drums - I find it funny people who are fans of MP dissing the drums that are of MP haha

If you're talking about "Suspended Animation" you're wrong. Portnoy didn't record the drums for that album. That was Dave DiCenso...

He played with them for 25 years and he was ready to move on. Just because musicians are talented doesn't mean they have to stay together. Geez
