For the prog-fans the world over who have been on tenterhooks as to the replacement for Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, the wait is almost over. According to Gibson.com, Roadrunner records have announced that details of the band's new drummer will be announced at 11am (EST) on Thursday, April 21st. For information on the audition process and who will be claiming the vacant drum stool, fans need to sign up the band's mailing list on their Facebook page. The band conducted three days of auditions in New York a month after original drummer Mike Portnoy parted ways with the band in September 2010. Portnoy, citing burnout from "never taking time off from DT's never-ending responsibilities" as his reason for departure, at the time touring with Avenged Sevenfold as a replacement for Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, who had passed away in December 2009. Portnoy, upon leaving Avenged Sevenfold in 2010, had reportedly asked his former band mates to rejoin, a request that was rejected. Singer James LaBrie revealed, in an October 2010 interview, that 7 world class drummers had been lined up as potential replacements for Portony at the New York City auditions. According to guitarist John Petrucci, "The departure of our lifelong band mate and friend was an unexpected and truly heartbreaking blow... The fact that as a result of that event we'd be introduced to seven infinitely capable and uniquely talented drummers was heartening." Dream Theater are set to headline the High Voltage festival in London this summer. The band is currently working on their 11th studio album. Title, track listing and release date for the new record have yet to be announced.

I mean Portnoy was a great drummer if not the best, but I'm kind of excited to see Mangini up there with DT. I think he has incredible talent and would work perfectly with the natural technical proficiencies of DT. He's won plenty of awards for drumming not to mention teaches at Berklee College of Music, where DT first formed.

this is getting ridiculous. can this not be in the news until they've REALLY announced who it is?

I don't understand all the people who say no one is as good as Portnoy...have none of you been keeping up with music? Musicianship has progressed people. There are countless as good as Portnoy and I'm guessing the man himself would agree with me. Matt Halpern, Gavin Harrison are just two that come to mind off the top of my head. Are they accomplished songwriters? Don't know but since everyone else in DT is a formally trained musician doing this for over 20 years, I'm sure the songwriting will be taken care of just fine.

I know it would never happen, but please be Gavin Harrison. Then do a King Crimson / Porcupine Tree / Dream Theater tour. Then play NZ. At least I can dream.

+1 At this point I don't care anymore. Announce the drummer and get it over with, stop trying to "tease" the fans because we're done. You lost me the second Portnoy left.

i honestly believe its about the legality. mike portnoy had his tentacles in everything DT did, maybe they were working on getting their shit straight, making sure he was out in every aspect...and in the process just let the drummer issue slide to keep us on our toes...

Is it just me, or DT is being nice because 420 is Portnoys birthday, so they're doing it after.

Just tell us who the new drummer is rather than keeping it a secret for so long, what are they Lebron James? Have to have a set date to announce their decision. Quit playing games, this isn't Velvet Revolver. If he's already a signed drummer and has a contract with a different record company, they have to go through a mess of legal works and contracts before something like this can be announced. My guess is that's whats been taking so long is all this legality stuff. I know a few people in the industry and that work with signed musicians and they explained all of that to me cause I've been equally anxious about who the drummer is.
Yeah but, why would they already start recording with this new guy for at least 2-3 months now if they didn't already have all those legality issues figured out? DT had picked their drummer months ago and had those legality issues figured out months ago, there's absolutely no reason to continue to stall to release this information to public unless they just want this attention which, if I had to guess, is probably the reason for this stall.

no...accually he recorded the drums after the two Johns recorded a scratch track with guitar and bass, then drums, then keyboard and then vocals. I think this because on the Images and Words Live dvd. it shows footage of him recording drums to a scratch track. Also John Petrucci does a lot of the song writing( I know Portnoy did his fair share) I think DT would be really screwed if Petrucci left but I doubt he ever will.

I don't know enough about their recording process to argue that, but I do know that John, John, and Jordan are all gifted, trained musicians that can handle themselves just fine. I don't know specifically what musical background LaBrie has, but he's no slouch either.

I just love how they made a press release for the sole purpose of telling us what we know and telling us to wait longer. I'm looking forward to the new album, but this whole drummer thing is still nothing but a test of a fan's patience.

Probably not, but at least the replacement won't be as annoying. Hopefully this will also end all of Portnoy's butthurt tweets about how DT doesn't return his texts or whatever

We all know its Mike Mangini ever since it was confirmed that Marco Minnemann didn't get it

we've all been mislead...on April 21st they didn't announce who the drummer was...all they did was reveal the names of the 7 drummers who auditioned for them. i'm a big fan of DT but this is getting ridiculous.
