He had emergency surgery after being diagnosed with diverticulitis, and the band have cancelled all tour dates to allow his recovery. What exactly is wrong with the guitarist?

Eddie Van Halen has been taken seriously ill and has undergone emergency surgery.

He was diagnosed with diverticulitis where the inner intestine or colon becomes inflamed or infected. An official statement confirms that Eddie needs no further surgery, but the band have had to cancel their remaining tour dates.

"A full recovery is expected within 4 - 6 months," read the Van Halen website. "[Out] scheduled November 2012 tour of Japan is currently being rescheduled and the band looks forward to seeing and playing for their fans in 2013."

This is not the first time Van Halen have had to cancel tour dates this year after reuniting to release their first album in 28 years, "A Different Kind OF Truth".

In May we reported on rumors that Van Halen were fighting and cancelling scores of tour dates. The band insisted the dates were postponed and would be re-booked, but by July they were officially cancelled.

Is the Van Halen reunion doomed, or has it simply been struck by a little bad luck? Share your opinion in the comments.

My mother had a bout of the same thing a few years ago and it was hell. Ed, from one of your biggest fans, kick this in the ass like you did with cancer & come back stronger than ever.

When the tour shut down, I figured it was either DLR with a vocal condition (his voice through the tour was okay at best) or EVH was having some sort of health issue. At least this puts the infighting rumors to rest.

Didn't Brock Lesnar have the same thing?

And the sequels of that illness made him retire of the UFC, when he fought his last fight his opponent targeted the belly area, Lesnar wasn't 100% recovered and the pain was severe.

lmao what a crock of sh!t. Lesnar lost that fight cause if his opponent can stuff is takedown attempts he knows as much about fighting as Victoria Beckham.

Yeah, I knew saw the aftereffects hit him hard, I just couldn't remember if this was the same disease or not.

I'd say a little bad luck. Hope Ed gets better.

I was afraid the big C had returned. God's got Randy Eddie, we need you here still, even if some people take you for granted

Oh well Van Halen wasn't getting along anyways so I'm not expecting the reunion to happen. This just makes it even more less likely.

I was diagnosed with diverticulitis about 2 and a half years ago and it was awful (pretty much better now though, thankfully). I wish Eddie a quick recovery!

You can't ever kill Eddie Van Halen!!!!! He is Jesus on earth No, really like it's 2012 people! If Eddie dies, than that is the sign that the world will end.

I'm sure your intentions were right but I suggest you not to talk about death. Get well soon Eddie!

this shows that people just can't take a joke. I hope Eddie does get better cuz we don't need to lose another great musician. But really, lighten up people!

My friend, I remarked at your comment with all due respect in case you haven't noticed. I really don't think it was a case of me not being able to take a joke but I found it unnecessary to talk about the death of a brilliant and inspiring musician like Eddie just because he's having problems with his health at his age. But if you find it funny, good for you. I really don't. Too bad.

Remember to eat your fiber kids. If you don't then pockets will form in your intestines where digested food and bacteria get stuck causing this sort of thing. Brock Lesnar also lost almost a foot of his colon from bad diverticulitis.

Despite the fact that he is one of the most overrated guitarists to ever live, he's still a musician and it would be sad to see him go. Glad he's okay.

Off the top of my head, I can remember The Beatles, The Black Keys, Jimi Hendrix, Jack White and now Eddie Van Halen being called overrated on this forum, and no one making the comments has any given any reason or any sort of proof as to why any of these bands/artists are overrated. It makes me wonder what rating system you're using, why you feel entitled to judge someone like EVH who is widely regarded as a pioneer in electric guitar (and I'm not a VH fan) and who you feel is an appropriately rated artist/band?

I've heard this so many times.....what the general public knows of EVH's ability is a small representation of everything he is capable of. But, tell us why you think he's overrated anyway.

Diverticulitis is a though illness, but Eddie has the resources and the ways to get good medical treatment. He will recover.

I suffered from this disease for a while. Dr. did not catch it. It was pure pain and discomfort for years. Then I perforated the bowel and almost died. Had to have surgery and 18 inches of my intestine were removed. astoo over 4 months to recover and return to work. I hope EVH gets well quickly
    Way Cool JR.
Hopefully he will make a full recovery. You never can tell when you have problems with the intestines, especially with infections that can possibly go septic. I wish him the best and a speedy recovery. He is one of the greatest innovators ever, and has contributed "IMO" more to the guitar world than anyone ever in Rock & Metal history. Things just wouldn't be the same today if he never came around. Get well soon Eddie.
