Eric Singer: 'Peter Criss Is a 'Hypocrite' for Criticizing Me Wearing KISS Make-Up'

The war between KISS generations continues.

Eric Singer: 'Peter Criss Is a 'Hypocrite' for Criticizing Me Wearing KISS Make-Up'

In a new interview with Rolling Stone (via Blabbermouth), KISS drummer Eric Singer has hit back at claims that he is a Peter Criss impersonator:

"Here's the thing that's ridiculous. I love when people say that, because the reality is, I'm not impersonating. Because I wear the makeup that he wore? Did they come up with their designs? Yes. Of course. But it's not an extension of their personality. Peter wasn't a cat. Peter Criss was a cat? They had to create a character. You know something? I don't know if he even had a pet cat. Come on, it's ridiculous."

Singer notes that he's never tried to play like Peter Criss onstage:

"I've always played the way I play. I play like Eric Singer. I don't play like Peter Criss. I don't try to play like Peter Criss. I don't mimic him on stage. Bottom line is, though, am I playing KISS songs? Yes. Am I playing songs that were originally played by Peter, and learning parts that Peter played or originally wrote? Yes, of course. But guess what? I did the same thing when I played in Black Sabbath or played with Brian May or played with Alice Cooper."

He also accused Criss and guitarist Ace Frehley of being hypocrites for critiquing him for wearing the make-up:

"This is something that I notice that nobody seems to point out. When I came in to play with the makeup, Ace was in the band, and had no problem with me playing with Peter's makeup while he went onstage and made that KISS money. In fact, he loved it, and he didn't want Peter back in the band. And then go forward the next year, when Ace decided to leave. When we fast forward, all of a sudden they bring Peter back, and you got Tommy Thayer playing guitar wearing the Ace makeup, and all of a sudden, no one minded it was Ace's makeup design. Peter had no problem, did he?"

I'm fed up with all these KISS news, it's same thing over and over again. But just to comment on this article, he's got a point. *note: who's the dude in the photo?

I've seen Kiss with Eric Singer twice. He's a great drummer (skill wise the best Kiss has had) and he does indeed play like himself. But the reasoning given for Peter Criss being a hypocrite is horribly ridiculous.

I had to smile when I read Eric's "Do I mimic him on stage? No!" ... nah you're not. You're just wearing his clothes, make up and wig while playing drum patterns he wrote. Right? ... Eric is a great drummer, but the whole discussion is ridiculous.

this kiss bullshit is getting silly..i thought singer had more pride then to act like the others..it's about music, not about who have to play it..i saw ace live..i saw kiss live..and both were great..just let it rest

I'll never understand KISS, they claim to not want to become a nostalgia act, yet they've got the replacement members of the band wearing old makeup designs. Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent did their own thing, why couldn't these two? I'm not gonna cry "BUT IT'S NOT ACE OR PETER" about it, but it completely goes against the anti-nostalgic views. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the true hypocrisy in KISS.

I love KISS, whether its 70's 'classic' KISS, or the 80's-90's 'non-makeup' KISS, or the current band. However, it unfortunately seems that from the surviving members, both past and present, it would appear the only two without an ego are Bruce Kulick and Tommy Thayer. Eric Singer has joined the ego trip that the original band and Vinnie Vincent have. Tis a shame really. Also, RIP Eric Carr and Mark St. John (even if you were only in the band for 8 months)

KISS is A brand. This is expected from the fans but not the members themselves. Ivan Moody never publicly criticizes the singer of my band for wearing the same paint he once wore. Be professional. That's all there is to it.

This is what happens when a band sells out. I like Kiss's music, but they went from being a rock band to a giant merchandising corporation. Gene Simmonds is a business man. When you lose focus on the art and focus on profit, you turn into a weasel and get into childish spats like this band has been going through lately.

He is overrated even as a business man

I think the amount of money he has accounts for how good of a business man he is, you can't overrate the official numbers.

Holy sh*t, shut up! Kiss sucks, if it's 1970s Kiss, or the old guys/cover band Kiss. Shut up and stop trying to be relevant.
