Foo Fighters and Of Monsters And Men were amongst the winners at the Festival Awards Europe 2012, held in Groningen, Holland on January 9, reports NME. The awards are decided by a combination of public vote and industry juries with Jake Bugg performing at this year's ceremony. Winners on the night included Foo Fighters for Best Headliner, Of Monsters and Men for Best Newcomer and Lykke Li, who took home the prize for Best Festival Anthem for her song "I Follow Rivers". For the first time in Festival Awards history, electronic music took the title for Best Major Festival, courtesy of Belgium's Tomorrowland. Dance music events also triumphed in the categories for Best Indoor Festival (Sensation, Netherlands) and Best New Festival (Germany's Electro Magnetic). Best Medium-Sized Festival was won by Heineken Balaton Sound in Hungary while the title for Best Small Festival was taken back by 2010 winners Tauron New Music Festival in Poland. Elsewhere there were wins for Rock Am Ring and Roskilde as well as Pukkelpop. Speaking about the awards, Steve Jenner, Festival Awards co-founder, said: "This edition of the European Festival Awards has been a great and much needed celebration for the industry as a united whole. A significant increase in events rallying to take part suggests a healthy display of confidence, competitiveness and pride. The staggering number of public votes received shows that people's appetites for festivals have never been greater. In the face of toughening conditions, the forecast still looks bright for Europe's festival market." The full list of winners at the Festival Awards Europe 2012 were:

Foo's deserve headliners of the year. They are one of the only bands in the past 18 years that can get 85 thousand people to sing to every song in a set.

Saw Foo Fighters at Leeds, no matter how good The Cure, Florence and Kasabian were, Dave Grohl and his homies stole the show.

Funny you should put it that way "Dave Grohl and his homies".... I saw them in 2011 and while I like a lot of their songs, the show felt more like Dave Grohl and some random backing band, than a REAL band outing. For much of the show, the other guys just kinda hung by the backline so as to not be in Dave's way. Saw Mastodon a week later and it was so very different....

I definitely realize exactly what you mean. I don't think it's a bad thing, though. That never used to be the case. But now at their shows you really can't take your attention away from him. He's infectious. If you really appreciate live music, though, you do occasionally focus on the other members and it makes you appreciate what they're doing that much more.

I know what you mean. Saw them live in 2011 as well and Dave did seem to be the center of attention. While there was the occasional guitar solo from Chris or the drum solo from Hawkins, Pat and Nate seem to stay back the whole time. I think Pat does it on purpose though cause he was tired of the constant touring and being in the spotlight all the time back in the 90's.

Of course they won, apparently no other bands exist when it comes to awards

everysong sounds the same. i could go in my basement and make a foo fighters song it 10 mintues. know why i dont? because its generic crap that, for some reason. gets treated like its the guns n roses of this generation. now watch me get flamed and disliked cause everybody here treats dave grohl like god

Predicting a negative response to your own idiocy does not make it any less idiotic.

Sure their music isn't the most creative out there. I'm a big fan myself, but I'll give you that. They've put out some albums and songs I could care less about. But this award was for best headliner. Have you ever seen the Foo Fighters at a festival? I'm guessing no because they can command a crowd of thousands like no other. They seem to still truly appreciate their fans after all these years.

the sabbath reunion at download fest this year was amazing (i was there). also i find bands like tenacious D and steel panther are great in 45 minute sets, because you dont have to listen to the songs that simply aren't funny

seen Foos 4 times, they where good but not the best act i saw at Leeds. Much better at their own gigs

Seen Foo Fighters twice, both times headlining festivals. Festivals are where it's at anyways, IMO. Much more relaxed.

Seen Foo's at Lowlands Festival 2012. It was so damn hot in the tent that they played 2 hours instead of 2.5. But they were amazing!

Rock am Ring and Rock im Park really have the best line-ups around. and the price you pay is the same as most other festivals (i.e. graspop, rock werchter, sziget, lowlands, pinkpop etc.) The only festival that comes close, in my opinion, is download festival, but that's expensive because european countries who use euro's for a currency have to pay more because you need to pay using pounds for the english festivals.
