Gene Simmons: 'I'm Thinking About Buying the Rock Hall'
63
KISS bassist Gene Simmons recently discussed the still-current matter of Rock Hall, suggesting an interesting idea - to buy it.

Asked by theĀ Tampa Tribune on how he'd change the system, Gene casually replied, "Well, I was thinking of buying the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."

Prompted to further elaborate, the bassist suggested a string of changes he'd incorporate if becoming the new Rock Hall head honcho. "The first thing I would do is move the bodies buried in the wrong place. I would bury them in the right place," he explained.

"I would put Run DMC, who I believe are very good, and the rest of hip-hop into the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame. I would take Madonna and Donna Summer, who was a dear friend, and put them in the Disco or Dance Hall of Fame. I would put Deep Purple in the Hall. The fact that Blondie got in before Humble Pie is crazy," Simmons added.

During the rest of the chat, the musician touched on quite a few interesting matters, ranging from original KISS reunion to the internet's impact to Lady Gaga.

The interviewer didn't even get to finish the Frehley/Criss reunion question as Gene jumped in with "Not a chance. We've already danced that dance three different times. No way will we reunite. It wouldn't be fair to Tommy and Eric. It wouldn't be right."

Switching to the matter of internet, Gene noted that a generation ago, "journalism was in a healthier state. The Internet has made journalism more cold," agreeing that the same could be said about music.

Finally, Simmons expressed hope for Lady Gaga to switch to full-on rockin' mode. "[Rock star] disappeared like the dinosaur. I would love it if Gaga, who was the only real rock star two-years ago, would rock out," he said.

"It would take King Kong-size balls if she came out with her next album and made a stripped down rock record with no tapes, no Vegas dancers and just go and kick disco in the nuts. Get the tapes and the male strippers off the stage. They're not musicians."

I like his idea of moving the non Rock artists to their rightful hall of fame. Proof he isn't as bad as people keep making him out to be

He could also call in the "Music Hall of Fame", and not move anyone out of the hall. My biggest problem is the "Rock and Roll"-part of the name. I am okay with Blondie and Run DMC getting recognition, just not from the "Rock and Roll" hall of fame.

Plus, if there were an official Hip-Hop HOF, I think that it would allow many more hip-hop/rap artists to be showcased and given their due for contributing to that line of music. It's a win-win. The Rock & Roll HOF wouldn't be so watered down, and those deserving in other genres of music would be better represented.

Run dmc belong in the rock hall. Their crossover with Aerosmith was a great thing for rock. Their song with Limp Bizkit, not so much.

I'm an idiot for forgetting the Aerosmith-collaboration. Run-DMC actually DO belong there!

But one song doesn't make you a Rock band. They added to an already released song, it's like saying any band that did a cover of a popular song should get into the hall. They should be a footnote in the Aerosmith section, but they don't deserve their own spot for 45 seconds of work.

for 1 song? I had all the Run DMC albums when I was a kid. Not to mention Fat Boys, LL Cool J, etc. But 1 song doesn't get you into the Hall of Fame. If it did, Ugly Kid Joe would be in there.

Not only that, but take tunes like "Rock Box" and "King of Rock". Run DMC had plenty rock influence in their music, and featured *gasp* ORIGINAL MUSIC! They might not have been a rock BAND, but they did a lot for the rock community.

I'm fine with Blondie being in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They're a punk rock band, what's the problem?

Don't get too far ahead of yourself. I certainly agree with him this time around, but that doesn't mean it's going to become a regular thing.

How is that proof of anything except that he has one decent idea? The idea of someone in a band(especially kiss) owning the "hall of fame" really doesn't help the credibility of the hall which is already run poorly. The "hall of fame" is just a trademarked name anyway. The prestige is all fake.

You people down vote me because you're idiots. If Michael Jordan owned the Basketball hall of fame it would look pretty ridiculous wouldn't it?

no, because if Micheal Jordan established a "Basketball Hall of Fame" most people would believe he did so because he loves basketball and wants to tell the world about his favorite players and the history of the game. The problem with the rock hall is easy to, likewise explain in these terms, it's like the "Basketball Hall of Fame" started inducting football players, and ignoring basketball players leading to the question, "why is John Elway in the Basketball hall of Fame when Larry Byrd isn't?"

I would agree that is certainly a huge problem. I just disagree that Gene Simmons is gonna solve it. This is the guy that went on a rant a few months ago about how the foo fighters are more influential than nirvana. There are many examples of his poor taste. Michael Jordan was a bad example because Gene certainly isn't the Michael Jordan of rock.

What makes you the arbiter of which artists do or do not conform to what 'rock and roll' is?
    Chickendirt
If it was just Rock n Roll most of the HoF would be gone. None from UG complain about metal or punk artists making it in. Bob Dylan and Beatles are there...I hear no whinging. It's just that there is a bit of Hip Hop in there that you complain, and 2/3 of those would be a rock band if it wasn't for the rapping. If you want to make those claims be prepared to go through with it. Not just stop where it suits you
    Jehuty
Let's get rid of the idea of a Hall of Fame, and just go back to enjoying the music, nothing more.

Can't believe I'm on the same page as Genne this time! I would take all of those non rockers out of there... not because they're bad, just because is not rock and roll... PD: Put Iron Maiden in!!!! For god's sake!!
    Chickendirt
But Iron Maiden is Metal and not rock and by your standard that means they shouldn't be there..
    Brandon1993
And he'd also start taking out any Rock bands he feels don't belong in there.....like Nirvana.
    INSULIN
blondie was a rock band .not Debbie harry and her backing band
    rabidgoon
simmons is a petulent child. he probably just mentioned blondie because something he released got a lower review than something blondie did in one issue of rolling stone or something.

Regarding the Lady Gaga thing: how could Gene possibly criticize her for putting on a show, when KISS itself is more known for their make up, pyrotechnics and lizard tongues than their music?!
    blingstar47
Gene's just an outright douche, but I actually support him on this. He'd probably make better executive decisions for the the Hall then the people running it now.
    rabidgoon
choosing musicians to induct that you personally prefer =/= better executive decisions
    blingstar47
My point is, there would be no nominations or random inductions of people who aren't rock.
    siamesedream777
If he has that amount of money. He shoud buy an space ticket and move to Neptune.
    jimbob32292
Lets be serious here too... the people who run the hall of fame are just as ludacris as the people who run Rolling Stones now.. just a bunch of pop sucking jackasses.
    Artturi
Fuck him. All he needs is a Gene's Favourites Gala. He said he doesn't think Nirvana should be in the Hall, all because they shook things in three years. He has been active for half a century, never changing the world, just pleasing a rich enough crowd to stay afloat.

I went to the rock hall last week while in Cleveland for work. I loved the evolution of hip-hop section and all of the different genres honored. Gene Simmons would ruin the museum if he bought it. Kiss isn't anything spectular to begin with and I can see the rock hall having an absurd amount of kiss stuff to please Gene's ego if he buys it.
    sweathog14
It's not a "all of the different genres Hall of Fame" - it's the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! What are you confused about?
    jimbob32292
Lol the fact that people disagree with Simmons shows how absurd our society is today. He rants off just like most Rock musicians, but the fact of the matter is hes right. There should be no BLONDIE or MADONNA when in reality they werent rock stars... I mean hell MADONNA DIDNT EVEN WRITE HALF OF HER SONGS... but yet it took Rush how many years to be entered? Hell I FUCKING HATE Nirvana, but they definetally diserved to be in the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME.
