Gene Simmons: 'I'm Thinking About Buying the Rock Hall'

"I would put Deep Purple in the Hall," KISS bassist says.

Ultimate Guitar

KISS bassist Gene Simmons recently discussed the still-current matter of Rock Hall, suggesting an interesting idea - to buy it.

Asked by the Tampa Tribune on how he'd change the system, Gene casually replied, "Well, I was thinking of buying the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."

Prompted to further elaborate, the bassist suggested a string of changes he'd incorporate if becoming the new Rock Hall head honcho. "The first thing I would do is move the bodies buried in the wrong place. I would bury them in the right place," he explained.

"I would put Run DMC, who I believe are very good, and the rest of hip-hop into the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame. I would take Madonna and Donna Summer, who was a dear friend, and put them in the Disco or Dance Hall of Fame. I would put Deep Purple in the Hall. The fact that Blondie got in before Humble Pie is crazy," Simmons added.

During the rest of the chat, the musician touched on quite a few interesting matters, ranging from original KISS reunion to the internet's impact to Lady Gaga.

The interviewer didn't even get to finish the Frehley/Criss reunion question as Gene jumped in with "Not a chance. We've already danced that dance three different times. No way will we reunite. It wouldn't be fair to Tommy and Eric. It wouldn't be right."

Switching to the matter of internet, Gene noted that a generation ago, "journalism was in a healthier state. The Internet has made journalism more cold," agreeing that the same could be said about music.

Finally, Simmons expressed hope for Lady Gaga to switch to full-on rockin' mode. "[Rock star] disappeared like the dinosaur. I would love it if Gaga, who was the only real rock star two-years ago, would rock out," he said.

"It would take King Kong-size balls if she came out with her next album and made a stripped down rock record with no tapes, no Vegas dancers and just go and kick disco in the nuts. Get the tapes and the male strippers off the stage. They're not musicians."

I like his idea of moving the non Rock artists to their rightful hall of fame. Proof he isn't as bad as people keep making him out to be
He could also call in the "Music Hall of Fame", and not move anyone out of the hall. My biggest problem is the "Rock and Roll"-part of the name. I am okay with Blondie and Run DMC getting recognition, just not from the "Rock and Roll" hall of fame.
Plus, if there were an official Hip-Hop HOF, I think that it would allow many more hip-hop/rap artists to be showcased and given their due for contributing to that line of music. It's a win-win. The Rock & Roll HOF wouldn't be so watered down, and those deserving in other genres of music would be better represented.
I'm fine with Blondie being in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They're a punk rock band, what's the problem?
Run dmc belong in the rock hall. Their crossover with Aerosmith was a great thing for rock. Their song with Limp Bizkit, not so much.
But one song doesn't make you a Rock band. They added to an already released song, it's like saying any band that did a cover of a popular song should get into the hall. They should be a footnote in the Aerosmith section, but they don't deserve their own spot for 45 seconds of work.
Not only that, but take tunes like "Rock Box" and "King of Rock". Run DMC had plenty rock influence in their music, and featured *gasp* ORIGINAL MUSIC! They might not have been a rock BAND, but they did a lot for the rock community.
I'm an idiot for forgetting the Aerosmith-collaboration. Run-DMC actually DO belong there!
for 1 song? I had all the Run DMC albums when I was a kid. Not to mention Fat Boys, LL Cool J, etc. But 1 song doesn't get you into the Hall of Fame. If it did, Ugly Kid Joe would be in there.
Don't get too far ahead of yourself. I certainly agree with him this time around, but that doesn't mean it's going to become a regular thing.
How is that proof of anything except that he has one decent idea? The idea of someone in a band(especially kiss) owning the "hall of fame" really doesn't help the credibility of the hall which is already run poorly. The "hall of fame" is just a trademarked name anyway. The prestige is all fake.
You people down vote me because you're idiots. If Michael Jordan owned the Basketball hall of fame it would look pretty ridiculous wouldn't it?

    Bad Kharmel
no, because if Micheal Jordan established a "Basketball Hall of Fame" most people would believe he did so because he loves basketball and wants to tell the world about his favorite players and the history of the game. The problem with the rock hall is easy to, likewise explain in these terms, it's like the "Basketball Hall of Fame" started inducting football players, and ignoring basketball players leading to the question, "why is John Elway in the Basketball hall of Fame when Larry Byrd isn't?"
I would agree that is certainly a huge problem. I just disagree that Gene Simmons is gonna solve it. This is the guy that went on a rant a few months ago about how the foo fighters are more influential than nirvana. There are many examples of his poor taste. Michael Jordan was a bad example because Gene certainly isn't the Michael Jordan of rock.
What makes you the arbiter of which artists do or do not conform to what 'rock and roll' is?
If it was just Rock n Roll most of the HoF would be gone. None from UG complain about metal or punk artists making it in. Bob Dylan and Beatles are there...I hear no whinging. It's just that there is a bit of Hip Hop in there that you complain, and 2/3 of those would be a rock band if it wasn't for the rapping. If you want to make those claims be prepared to go through with it. Not just stop where it suits you
Let's get rid of the idea of a Hall of Fame, and just go back to enjoying the music, nothing more.
Can't believe I'm on the same page as Genne this time! I would take all of those non rockers out of there... not because they're bad, just because is not rock and roll... PD: Put Iron Maiden in!!!! For god's sake!!
But Iron Maiden is Metal and not rock and by your standard that means they shouldn't be there..
And he'd also start taking out any Rock bands he feels don't belong in Nirvana.
blondie was a rock band .not Debbie harry and her backing band
simmons is a petulent child. he probably just mentioned blondie because something he released got a lower review than something blondie did in one issue of rolling stone or something.
Regarding the Lady Gaga thing: how could Gene possibly criticize her for putting on a show, when KISS itself is more known for their make up, pyrotechnics and lizard tongues than their music?!
Gene's just an outright douche, but I actually support him on this. He'd probably make better executive decisions for the the Hall then the people running it now.
choosing musicians to induct that you personally prefer =/= better executive decisions
My point is, there would be no nominations or random inductions of people who aren't rock.
If he has that amount of money. He shoud buy an space ticket and move to Neptune.
Lets be serious here too... the people who run the hall of fame are just as ludacris as the people who run Rolling Stones now.. just a bunch of pop sucking jackasses.
Fuck him. All he needs is a Gene's Favourites Gala. He said he doesn't think Nirvana should be in the Hall, all because they shook things in three years. He has been active for half a century, never changing the world, just pleasing a rich enough crowd to stay afloat.
I went to the rock hall last week while in Cleveland for work. I loved the evolution of hip-hop section and all of the different genres honored. Gene Simmons would ruin the museum if he bought it. Kiss isn't anything spectular to begin with and I can see the rock hall having an absurd amount of kiss stuff to please Gene's ego if he buys it.
It's not a "all of the different genres Hall of Fame" - it's the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! What are you confused about?
Lol the fact that people disagree with Simmons shows how absurd our society is today. He rants off just like most Rock musicians, but the fact of the matter is hes right. There should be no BLONDIE or MADONNA when in reality they werent rock stars... I mean hell MADONNA DIDNT EVEN WRITE HALF OF HER SONGS... but yet it took Rush how many years to be entered? Hell I FUCKING HATE Nirvana, but they definetally diserved to be in the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME.
Gene Simmons is STILL wrong. Yes deserves to be in the rock n roll hall of fame more than Humble Pie. So does Motorhead, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.
How in hell did people turn an honor (being INDUCTED into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) into such a crap race for their idiotic preservation of some band that rules their spec of the universe. It was about merit hopefully still is and there is(was, should be) a process that goes along with being inducted that you people have no idea of. Gene has some points that should be incorporated into the process but,as an owner is questionable. Maybe on the board. There are still too many artist that deserve this distinguished award and I could fill the rest of this site with the names that you people have forgotten about or never even heard of that worked hard at the art of Rock and Roll being more than worthy inductees. For every band that can be named by any one of you here on this site there are at least 10 more that did it before, maybe even better or crafted and perfected part the art before your bands even showed up for there first band practice. To Be inducted means that you are among the best at the art not the best and you are so honored for your hard work and contributions to.
If he buys rock hall it will be renamed: The great Gene Simmons presents: Kiss hall of fame In middle of everything there is huge golden Gene statue and some random corners will feature other bands but that place will be mostly filled with Kiss items and framed paintings. And probably he will throw everything related to nirvana in trash can, since he thinks Kurt was not talented at all.

Why does everyone hate Gene Simmons so much? I've never understood it, seems more like jealous that he's made such a massive amount of money off a very popular band. If the main reason really IS just because he made a lot of money and you are one of these people that call musicians "sellouts"...well I remember when I was 12, but one day, when you grow up, you'll realize just how incredibly stupid the idea that musicians shouldn't make money truly is. Anyone that says they wouldn't do anything Gene Simmons has done is a complete ****ing liar.
Why is the automatic assumption that people who dislike someone are just jealous. I'm not jealous of Alex Jones, and I hate that guy. I don't hate Gene or even dislike him, I don't really care, but people can dislike someone for reasons other than jealousy.
    Velcro Man
Gene Simmons isn't a nutjob conspiracy theorist, he's an elementary school teacher that became rich and famous.
Can't believe how stupid people are on this site. I mean who gives a **** about the rock hall ? If you feel offended that a band you love isn't in the hall of fame you have to be one dumb sob.
It is the internet... I've always been one to obsess over things that I have no control over and I recently realized that that just makes things worse. I figure people have just gotten tired of b****ing about Metallica.
I don't know man. I wonder if there is more he's not telling us. The reason why I'm feeling a tad skeptical about this is because he is telling us what we want to hear. I feel like he's kind of acting like a politician who tells us what we want to hear and then doesn't act on what he promises. But hey, I could be wrong.
Only time will tell. It seems that anything could happen but it'll be interesting to see how this turns out.
For the most part I actually agree with him on this but I think Peter and Ace being inducted with him is his real peeve and really burns his ass and he would remove them.
this guy is the biggest joke on earth. let's hope he croaks soon.
It's not very nice to wish death upon someone... Regardless of mistakes made in the past. And what about Rob Ford? I think he's a bit more of a joke than Gene Simmons.
In 1977 KISS was why I lived. They were surreal. It sucks that kids today don't have such positive role models haha
yeah it sucks being raised by Dave Grohl (you know, that guy who is always labelled as the nicest guy in rock). I'd much rather be raised with corporate sell outs teaching us that money is more important than passion
The Rock N' Roll hall of fame is a joke and so is Gene Simmons. Gene will probably rename it, "The KISS Hall of Fame Featuring Lesser Acts".
I really didn't need another reason to dislike Gene Simmons but... thanks.

I don't understand some of the comments on here saying that this is a bad you people just not comprehend the fact that there is indeed several different genres of music and that it makes no sense to have Hip-Hop, Pop, and R&B artists inducted into a ROCK Hall of Fame? That's like arguing that your favorite fruit is broccoli. Yeah, Broccoli's a plant, but it's not a fruit. God people. It's a simple enough concept.
No it isn't. A clear division between rock and pop hasn't always been the case (would you keep the Beatles, Bowie, or Clapton out for making pop music? Hip-hop and R&B are more awkward, but basically came from US black culture, like the blues, probably the biggest influence on rock n roll, so there's that connection.
"The fact that Blondie got in before Humble Pie is crazy" F*ck eh right man!! And Gene, while you're at it, you can put Ted Nugent and Frank Marino in there.
idk... long he doesn't turn it into some reality show he thinks music fans need...the hall is forever..not a season.
"Some rock n roll bands are also pop groups, but not all pop groups are rock n roll bands" is the issue some people have, especially drawing the line at non-guitar based music. Probably the name of the hall is being taken too literally and its basically for influential acts in popular music. if it were about RAWK then why have the Beach Boys and Hollies (let alone Madonna or ABBA) in the same hall as Zep and Aerosmith?
