Gene Simmons: 'Muse Is the Most Interesting Band to Come Out in 10 Years'

KISS frontman also rips "depressive" grunge scene, shows zero compassion for people prone to suicide, more inside.

Gene Simmons: 'Muse Is the Most Interesting Band to Come Out in 10 Years'

KISS frontman Gene Simmons recently gave another interview featuring quite a few attention grabbers, but also dropped somewhat of an unexpected comment, praising Muse as the most interesting fresh band of the past decade.

After placing Radiohead among personal favorites, Gene was asked by Songfacts to name another favorite contemporary act. "I think Muse is the most interesting band to come out in 10 years," he replied, only to once again share Lady Gaga praises.

"I think Lady Gaga is the only new rock star, although she's not a rocker. I would like her to throw away all the disco stuff and get a band. Don't use tapes, come out with a real live band and guitars. She's a bonafide musical artist. She did a duet with Tony Bennett, real great pipes. She can sit at a piano all by herself. She's a legitimate artist. A lot of the other pop divas who are really talented are not artists," he added.

Furthermore, Simmons noted that KISS got very close to collaborating with Gaga on their latest album. "We tried [collaborating with Lady Gaga], on our last record. And we got close. She got busy, we got busy. We would have done it."

Now on to the headline-grabbing parts. Explaining how he's still not getting along with original KISS members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, the bassist ripped anyone victimizing themselves, taking aim at drug addicts, the grunge scene, and people prone to suicide.

"I don't get along with anybody who's a drug addict and has a dark cloud over their head and sees themselves as a victim," he said. "Drug addicts and alcoholics are always: 'The world is a harsh place.'

"My mother was in a concentration camp in Nazi Germany. I don't want to hear f--k all about 'the world as a harsh place.' She gets up every day, smells the roses and loves life. And for a putz, 20-year-old kid to say, 'I'm depressed, I live in Seattle.' F--k you, then kill yourself.

"I never understand, because I always call them on their bluff. I'm the guy who says 'Jump!' when there's a guy on top of a building who says, 'That's it, I can't take it anymore, I'm going to jump.' Are you kidding? Why are you announcing it? Shut the f--k up, have some dignity and jump! You've got the crowd.

"By the way, you walk up to the same guy on a ledge who threatens to jump and put a gun to his head, 'I'm going to blow your f--kin' head off!' He'll go, 'Please don't!' It's true. He's not that insane," Gene concluded.

Glad to see he has his finger on the pulse. Their first EP was released in 1998 and I first heard of them in 1999.

"Gene just made his most interesting comment in 10 Years" """Gene Simmons: 'Muse Is the Most Interesting Band to Come Out in 10 Years'"""

Guarantee you if Lady Gaga had started out in a rock band or does a rock record some people on here would like her a lot more than they do. And Muse at least try new things (even if they technically have been around longer than ten years)
    JAHellraiser
What an arsehole. His only valid point is about his mother surviving a nazi concentration camp.
    bangbang!!
Yeah, but that IS kind of an argument-trumper. I mean, you'd have to be a huge a**hole to counter that.
    SkepsisMetal
Not really. If she wants to pull that card, she can. But if he wants to use it as a pedestal to front his bullshit opinions then he's a bigger **** than the people he bitches about. I'd rather pull some random guy off a ledge than Simmons. He can jump.

Couldn't agree more. Mental Illnesses are no less legitimate than physical illnesses, and in many cases worse because they are in your head, untreatable, and not well understood. I mean seriously, what a freaking prick to say something like that? I bet Gene is the kind of guy that tells everyone his mother was in a concentration camp to prop up whatever ignorant bullshit happens to be spilling out of his mouth that day.
    Mixloopx
He didn't say anything like that. He is talking about people who claim to have mental illnesses to get attention, that's all to common online, people self diagnosing themselves with all kinds of mental illnesses so they can get more likes on their facebook statuses.
    LaughingWater2
No he wasn't. He was clearly talking about people who are on top of buildings threatening to jump off, thats why he said it.

OK...I don't ****ing care what his mom did...there if that makes me an ******* then so be it...he's an inconsiderate dickhead who needs to **** off

Agree with the Lady Gaga bit. She needs to do some straight up rock. That chick/ fella can sing.

The reason Gene Simmons doesn't know more than three artists to surface in the past decade is because his head has been lodged firmly is his own ass for over three decades.

Just listen to Map of the Problematique you will be a Muse fan for life after listening to it

Yes! That and Hysteria were the ones that really got me hooked.

Why is everyone suddenly bashing Grunge, it wasn't terrible ad there were some good bands to come out of it.
    tric565
People like Gene have been bashing it right from when it started to get big in the very early 90s. Didnt stop kiss from releasing a "grunge" album themselves to try and cash in on it all but they was about 5 years too late.

This article was titled after only mentioning Muse once. Congrats UG.
    Izzy-Sweet
Yeah, headline should have been "Gene Simmons uses an irrational comparison to hate on the suicidally depressed"
    apartzero
This guy must really be jealous of the grunge bands. You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain
    BjarnedeGraaf
Didn't lady gaga have The Darkness as an opening band? I feel like it shows she has a lot more rock in her than we tend to think here
    DMRIOT
Cobain never announced it. He went ahead and did it. So i assume the kid from seattle he is referring to isn't him.
    siamesedream777
Poor Gene, he will never understand that any 90's is way better than his emoglammetalmakeup shitty band.
    Campbell22
The demographic on UG must be around 13 now, I feel like I'm reading a teen magazine.

Welcome to the party. There are a growing number of people on here that hide behind their keyboards and usernames while they spout offensive crap, just like uninformed, immature children. They give children a bad name, actually.
    Jmoarguitar
In all reality though, people can become depressed from seemingly nothing at all. It's not because they're pussies, it's because it is a real mental illness. Sure, there are people who are just soft and attention needing, but when people say things like that I don't believe they understand the whole of what they're mocking.
    peachesenregali
As much as I hate this guy he's completely right about the suicide thing. People who go to a roof just to attract the police, press etc. care clearly just looking for a shoulder to cry on. Gene is still a dick though.
    SkepsisMetal
Of course they are, they're ****ing depressed you utter mongoloid. Nobody takes anybody with depression seriously until they actually jump, even the "help services" that tote themselves about as some omnipresent deity that will cure all their problems. More often than not it's a cry for help, and quite often it gets them out of the hole they were in.

Suicide is the most selfish act you can commit in this beautiful world...
    tric565
Good for you if you think this world is beautiful but to some people a few aesthetically pleasing views of nature, the sound of children laughing, the occasional couple who are happy and in love does not make up for all the terrible sh** life has in store for a lot of people on this planet. This whole life thing is just as capable of being a curse as it is being a gift. And as for a selfish act, show me someone who doesnt commit selfish acts.
    SkepsisMetal
More selfish than murder? Rape? Kidnapping? Terrorism? Come off it. I have little sympathy for the people who commit suicide, I personally disagree with the action itself. But that was nothing to do with what I said. Most people who threaten suicide, don't want to do it. Almost everyone who attempts it, immediately regrets their decision once they realise they have done something irreversible leading to their demise. You have to be in a pretty deep hole if ceasing to exist is the only way out you can see. And you get that deep by being ignored by selfish tools and egotistical morons like Simmons and like minded people who cannot see a last ditch grab at help from a desperate person. Of course they're attention seeking, attention is what needs to be drawn to a very serious issue that isn't taken seriously enough; case in point - this article and the dickwad subject of it.

s7peterson, Allow me to introduce you to Tony Nicklinson: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17336774 This is a man who faced legitimate physical problems and had to be taken care of for all of his daily needs. He wanted to end his life not only for himself, but so those around him could continue onwards without him being a burden. Sadly, he was denied his right to die, he did die shortly after, possibly due to the heartbreak of being denied. However, the point is, he wanted to end it on almost completely selfless terms, even to the point of just simply giving others in his situation the "right to die" should they choose it. Now, tell us again how suicide is the most selfish thing in this "beautiful" world.
    s7peterson
That's a different situation. Ive seen that documentary. I mean that if someone commits suicide out of depression it puts everyone they knew through hell. And the fact they killed themselves despite of knowing that is selfish. I sounded insensitive and uninformed I know. Ive been to the point of attepting it. And I stopped because I knew it would put my family and friends through hell. I realized how selfish it would be of me. We all deal with bad shit in this world. And I think its insensitive of others to think they have the right to kill themselves out of depression when someone else whos going through worse shit is dealing. This is my opnion and idc if you think less of me
    Izzy-Sweet
It's hardly a different situation, those with suicidal intentions genuinely believe that it would be better for them and everyone else if they weren't around any more. If someone wants to commit suicide, they usually doubt they'll be missed and often see themselves as a burden. You didn't kill yourself because you realised that people actually would care, and that's fantastic, I sincerely mean that, but that's not the case for everybody who's been there and particularly those that went through with it.
    Eissari
You have never had any problems in this beautiful world? If you are depressed this beautiful world doesn't help much
    s7peterson
yes i have had problems. everyone does...but ive had the realization that life is beautiful
    peachesenregali
Therapists are better at that shit than the police though. I take depression as seriously as anyone and I agree there's a revolting stigma attached to it that makes people view the depressed as pussies. There are better things to do in that situation than make a ****ing scene though. If you're going to kill yourself and you've tried everything you possibly could to prevent yourself from doing so, just ****ing kill yourself.
    jeretx2
I've seen Lady Gaga twice. She has a monstrous live band. They get heavy. I don't think Gene has actually been to one of her shows. It's a rock/pop show, for sure.
    TreyR
I partly agree - "Muse Is the Most Interesting Band to Come Out in 10 Years" that make it big. Otherwise there are bands that are, at least, as interesting as Muse.
    MichaelScarn
these old rockers always complain about today's music because they're mad they aren't a relevant part of it
