Gibson Creates Dethklok Guitar

Next month will see the release of Gibson's newest guitar: the Dethklok "Thunderhorse" Explorer.

The Adult Swim comedy cartoon Metalocalypse has not only become a highly successful television show with a huge fanbase, but has also created the famous fictional death metal band Dethklok. The music written for Dethklok has led to the release of multiple albums, transcription books, and now even a new guitar. The guitar in question will be a special model of the Gibson Explorer. Adult Swim released the following statement about the upcoming release of the instrument: Available beginning next month at Gibson Guitar dealers throughout the U.S., the Dethklok 'Thunderhorse' Explorer is a top-flight metal guitar patterned after the animated band's lead guitarist, Skwisgaar Skwigelf's weapon of choice. It features a gloss Silverburst finish with cream top and fingerboard binding. It is equipped with Burstbucker 1 and Burstbucker 2 pickups and is decked out with chrome hardware. The limited-edition guitar will be available for a suggested retail price of $2699. Brendon Small, who is one of the show's main writers as well as the man behind composing Dethklok's music, also commented on the guitar: Though our show is a crazy comedy, we managed to target a very large guitar playing audience. I think that's because despite all the joking I do on the show, I take the guitar playing and the way the guitar is presented on the show quite seriously! It may be the only thing I take seriously! Well, I take chocolate seriously too. Anyway, it's great to see the fans responding to the guitar and the music through buying CD and guitar tab books! But I have to say I never knew I'd be lucky enough to design a Gibson Explorer!! This Silverburst is amazing. It sounds beautiful and I've been putting it through the tests on my solo record and it sounds absolutely beautiful! I am officially the luckiest man alive!

Now i'm going to wait for an affordable Epiphone version. I'd like to own an Explorer just for fun, to mess around at home, and a Dethklok signature Explorer could be interesting...

The retail price on this is only $300 more than a regular ebony Explorer, which is about $200 more in street value. Pretty low mark-up compared to most signature model or low-run guitars.

Gibson lowering the price? Don't hold your breath on that one. Most of Gibson's product line is overpriced and nothing has changed so far. If it doesn't sell they'll just quit making it and move onto the next Firebird XIXII project. It's cool that they're making a sig guitar for the show. I love the show but don't think it deserves a signature guitar. Most of Gibson's buyers are not gonna be familiar with Metalocalypse and sales may suffer because of this. Gibson have really been making unusual signature series lately.

Tab books aren't worth a **** either. That's why so many people play everything wrong. Just because it says "official" doesn't mean it's right.

Gibson makes boring old man guitars that you have to put another $500 into after paying the outrageous prices to get them looking/sounding how you want. The only reason why I have them is because Gibson had to be sissy bitches and stop ESP from making the MX. Have you been snorting blocks? How Gibson is as a company is completely irrelevant! They use Gibson's on the show, why the **** wouldn't they release a Gibson/Epiphone signature? Do you expect them to use Gibson's on the show then get an ESP signature? Or maybe a Charvel or Fender signature? Not gonna lie, it'd make more sense for them to use ESP's or Jackson's, even B.C. Rich's, but Brendon uses Gibson's to make the music, so it only makes sense to portray the band he's playing in using the same brand, (Gibson's). Also, silver burst is awesome, and I'm happy they released it on an Explorer... If it came with a Floyd, alder body, 24 frets and 25.5" scale length, then I'd probably buy it.
Thing I'm wondering is why you would buy ANOTHER Explorer if the first one didn't sound any good. That was a stupid move, sir. But I don't really believe you anyways because Explorers are amazing when used with the right setup.

This Is Crap Pure Crap. Tokis is an under rated Guitar player. Its only because of Swissgar and Murderface always putting him down that he isn't the lead I think Toki should leave the band and form one with Dr. Rockso

Not true. Gibson made a Clapton ES335 and Fender, of course makes the signature Strat. I think Gibson also did an SG with that wacky psychedelic paint job like he had in Cream. Whatever.

Didnt Small state himself that his Sig. Explorer was going to be affordable??? guess not, love Metalocalypse and Dethklok but i dont love it that much to shell out 3 grand for a "Shiny" Explorer

Lol 2700 for a cartoon replica? No thanks, I'll pay 500 and get the same exact quality, or do the not retarded thing and buy a amazing amp. Great business move though I guess, clearly there are already a lot of stupid people willing to pay.

Sk wisgaar's explorer uses EMGs apparently However if you look at alot of Brendon Small's guitar videos he never seems to be using emgs or active pickups for that matter. Although I havn't seen all his videos As for the show I cant really remember seeing what pickups the artists have drawn on the guitars. Brendon may just be modeling off the guitars he uses
^This. As Brendon said, he doesn't take the show seriously but takes his guitar very seiously. He designed a guitar HE would use and not Skwisgaar. There's a lot of us metal players that prefer passive the PUs over EMGs...especially thru a modern high-gain amplifier.

Thick necks, poor neck diameter, terrible upper fret access. I guess its whatever but its my opinion and i stick by it.
Right on. My dislikes are the way they look, they've never supported the metal community, they went after ESP like bitches, they put ugly pickguards on everything, they put toggles in really stupid positions, intonation is a nightmare and of course, the high prices. The one thing I DO like is that they're heavy, but it's not enough to justify. They do sound good, but it's a pain in the ass to maintain them. And I shouldn't have to spend another $500 on a guitar tha I already paid $1,400 for.

I dont understand, why would it come with a drummer? I'd buy a Normandy aluminum before one of these if I was throwing around 2K. Im just not impressed. Although overcharging for a guitar just because of its association with a band/player is pretty brutal and just about as metal as you can get. Offdensen would be proud.

The only thing I like about this guitar is the shape and sound. The neck and practicality are a completely different matter. As stated somewhere above, they're a nightmare to set up and just as bad to keep in tune. Guitars shouldn't be a chore to play, they should be fun and practical for everyone of all levels. That said, the finish on this one is ok at best. If that's what Brendan uses though I can see why it deviated from the one drawn on Skwiisgaar. And for that price I'd rather buy two guitars from a more metal company that sound just as great if not better than Gibsons. Personal preference I suppose... ...And I'd totally buy the guitar made from the cross of jesus christ!

If you guys want to see pics, just Google "Dethklok Gibson Explorer". It's the silver burst in nearly every picture.

That high of a price tag and still not even 24 frets? What the hell Gibson?? Pics would be nice too.

The silverburst finish is very exciting because it brings back a very rare finish from the early 80's that gets big money on the vintage market. Because the original Gibson models which featured it would slowly turn green over the years, finding an original silverburst that was still silver would get top money. Now people can have that finish again affordably. It was one of the finishes on the very rare Flying V bass from the time, that gets BIG money on the trade market today.

They said it's a DETHKLOK Explorer. Skwisgaar may not exist, but Dethklok does. And it could be a Brendon Small signature guitar. He exists.
