Guns N' Roses: 'Chinese Democracy' Re-Enters US Charts

Ya gotta love it when a plan comes together. That's how the folks at Best Buy are feeling these days, as they've started to unload some of the more than 1 million copies of Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" which have been collecting dust in their systems due to lack of public interest. The retailer placed "Democracy" in its bargain bin recently, making the CD available for just $1.99, and the move is starting to pay off. "Democracy" sold around 3,200 copies in the US in the week ending Sunday, April 3 - nearly three times the amount (1,200) sold the previous week. As a result, "Democracy" has sold enough to re-enter the Billboard 200 chart at position No. 198. As the exclusive U.S. retailer for "Chinese Democracy", Best Buy reportedly paid $14 million for 1.6 million copies of the album; to date, it has sold just 614,000 copies in the U.S., based on Nielsen SoundScan reports. Released in November of 2008, "Democracy" was officially certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on February 3, 2009 for shipments in the United States in excess of one million copies. Thanks for the report to Hennemusic.com.

you got everything right except the timeline for the release of JB. Should be more like, "ten years after next year:" so yeah. 11 years.

All this hate...but Best Buy does this fairly regularly. The Killers' Day and Age was also on sale at BB for $1.99 once, just to name one off the top of my head, but no one got up in arms and celebrated it. I'm willing to be 80% of the people bashing CD haven't given it a listen on it's music, instead of illogically hoping it'll sound like Appetite for Destruction.

All of this negative rep is a shame, because as someone who obviously loved Appetite and dug a lot of (but not all) songs on UYI I & II, I really enjoyed ChiDem. I don't have a bad word to say about it. I hope it doesn't put Axl off releasing a sequel in..... I dunno, 2048?

Uh, seeing as how it sold 1,200 the week before it went on sale, I'd doubt a 300% increase in sales would be followed by a complete halt. You're so good at this numbers thing, they should have you working the consumer trends at walmart. And if making it into the top 200 albums is so easy, let's see you do it. I'll even buy a copy to give you a head start. I think we have a butthurt GnR fan who's in denial about Chinese Democracy... hi, i've always wanted to meet one of you...
What is there to be in denial about? I've got a pretty decent album to enjoy, and it doesn't hurt anyone but Best Buy selling these albums so cheap. Seems like you're the one whose butt may be hurting.

^My exact thoughts. I, too, liked the album, but there was way too much synthesized and weird shit. I mean, Sweet Child O' Mine, Paradise City...that's real GNR. It's a shame it didn't follow through on a similar path. IMO, it probably would have sold better if they sold it under Bumblefoot's name.

Well, I'd admit that I bought a copy on vinyl. My dad told me he'd buy me something for $5 and that was the best thing I saw for $2, and then with the rest I bought some vitaminwater or something. I enjoyed the vitaminwater more.

You must be total mad dude, if they are among the 200 best selling bands during that period, I think its something to be proud of. You try to do that, jackass. Next year: Axl releases Japanese Bureaucracy. No store will carry it.
Yes getting to #198 in the billboard charts isn't generally an easy thing to do, but you can't use that argument in this case - we're not talking about some unknown person from UG trying to get into the charts, we're talking about one of the biggest rock groups of all time. For THEM to only be at #198 is not good

NOW I see what's got the economy flustered and beyond - as if government spending weren't enough, people go out and buy this record. still.

Chinese Democracy was amazing. I do beleive it should have just been an Axl solo album though. Even though I think the new guys are way better talent wise than the pre-1996 line up.

Im still waitting for the price to go a bit lower. Slash wasnt the band but with out Him GnR was no more Axl might have pulled it off it was Alx not GnR. Ozzy isnt blacksabath I could gone on all day

He everyone, go to your basement see all the people there? yeah thats all the people that care.

It kinda says something about how the charts work that only 1 company in the world has to throw an album in its bargain bin and all of a sudden it re-enters the carts. I may be abit drunk right now but that tells me that the way the charts are controlled isnt about the quality of the music anymore... its how cheap the CD is...
    explosionate
I wonder how much the local record stores will sell the used copies they get. They'll probably stack them near the door as free handouts.

Has someone recently paid you $14 million for 1.6 million copies of an album? It's amusing how cheap they're selling for but unfortunately Axl already got paid. I liked the album to be honest, I reckon it would have sold a lot better if he dropped the Guns N Roses name though.
