James Brown Dies On Christmas Day

James Brown, the legendary "Godfather of Soul", died at approximately 1:45 AM early on Christmas morning.

James Brown, the undeniable "Godfather of Soul," told friends from his hospital bed that he was looking forward to performing on New Year's Eve, even though he was ill with pneumonia. His heart gave out a few hours later, on Christmas morning. The pompadoured dynamo whose classic singles include "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" and "I Got You (I Feel Good)" died Monday of heart failure, said his agent, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music. He was 73.

"People already know his history, but I would like for them to know he was a man who preached love from the stage," said friend Charles Bobbit, who was with Brown at the hospital. "His thing was 'I never saw a person that I didn't love.' He was a true humanitarian who loved his country."

The entertainer with the rough-edged voice and flashy footwork also had diabetes and prostate cancer that was in remission, Bobbit said. Brown initially seemed fine at the hospital, Copsidas said. Three days before his death, he had participated in his annual toy giveaway in Augusta, and he was looking forward to his New Year's Eve show.

"Last night, he said 'I'm going to be there. I'm the hardest working man in show business,'" Copsidas said Monday. He said Brown planned to perform during a two-week tour in Canada after hitting Times Square.

Brown was himself to the end, at one point saying, "I'm going away tonight," Bobbit said at a news conference later Monday. "I didn't want to believe him," he said.

A short time later, Brown sighed quietly three times, closed his eyes and died, Bobbit said.

One of the major musical influences of the past 50 years, Brown was to rhythm and dance music what Bob Dylan was to lyrics. From Mick Jagger to Michael Jackson, David Bowie to Public Enemy, his rapid-footed dancing, hard-charging beats and heartfelt yet often unintelligible vocals changed the musical landscape.

He was one of the first artists inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, along with Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and other founding fathers.

Although I didn't know much more than his major hits; it's always sad when a legend bites the dust. Rest in peace.
Aww....this is so sad. I really thought he was gonna be around forever. Even seeing him perform recently he looked like he was still healthy and had no intention of quitting, which he wasn't.
WOW, I just watched him live last week (course pre-recorded U.K. hall of fame). Anyway, that really sucks, worst day too
RIP I always loved that pepsi commercial, its sad thats what i remember him most by.
RIP brother. He'll be jammin it up with the likes of Jimi, Randy, and Dimebag. With Bon Scott doin the vocals. RIP
    Teh Freak
This sucks almost as much as when Johnny Cash died. I didn't think James would ever stop. He was an absolute legend. R.I.P.

    and I as well
R+I+P His music was some of the first, if not the first, I remember hearing. He was a true icon for funk music.
I personally am a metal fan, always have been a metal fan, always will be a metal fan. But i and all others cannot deny the great things this man did. A loss for funk, a loss for music, a loss for humanity, a big gain to she skies above. One Day We'll All join him and all the legends once again. R.I.P
R.I.P... anyone who truly loves/appreciates music will mourn the loss of yet another legend. but on a lighter note, at least he died of natural causes and wasnt taken before his time by a plane crash, bus wreck, suicide, drug o.d, or a disturbed individual with a gun.
Nooooo At least he's jamming with Jimi now R.I.P. you sex machine.
Damn... Wish I could have seen more of his show a few months back (I got trapped in another pit, only got to see one song, Sex Machine) RIP Soulful one!
never heard any of his music, but i did see him in undercover brother... he was amazing. R.I.P.
Yeah, I knew. This really sucks. R.I.P you legend.

amen brotha. I was deeply saddened by this bit of news. but i read on yahoo on christmas eve that he had died. idk though.
LOL James Brown was the man! Im pretty sure is he was in jail one time and they found 1000's of $ in his cell LOL
i wasnt the biggest james brown fan...but i have respect for music and the people who make it. he...despite what some other people may think, was one of the most talented people in music. i love metal...its my music that i love. but think about it....james brown influenced so many people...then those people influenced other people...and those people influenced others...its all got to start somewhere...and music doesnt care who u are...poor, white, black, rich, blind...it just cares that u love it and u love to make it. i believe that we all need to respect this man...even if u dont listen to his kinda of music...u never know who may have influened ur musical heroes. so i say raise a glass to mr. james brown..to forever remeber the man..that feels good!
its sad that all the drug arrests and issues in his life over shadowed what he has done for music. thank him for perfecting the live stage performance. many artists wish they could have such accuracy on stage as he did (back in the day at least)
Damn it! he's the whole reaon I wanted to join a gospel church like on blues brothers! Collaberating with Hendrix, the only way to get tickets is to die. bummer
rest in peace you dust smoking, wife beating, shotgun toting maniac. there will be no other like you
    solitudes stevo
