Jason Newsted's newly-formed band Newsted seems pretty interesting on a first listen.

Featuring Newsted himself on bass and vocals, Jessie Farnsworth on guitar, and Jesus Mendez Jr. on drums, the band already has a 4-song EP set for January 18th, titled, plainly "Metal" a move which the frontman compared to Down's series of EPs. The first track from the EP "Soldierhead" was recently unveiled, showing a sound that reminds little of the "Black Album"/"Load"/"Reload" period during which Jason Newsted performed with Metallica, and goes back to a more primitive metal sound, Antiquiet notes.

Listen to the track below:

I wonder if that bit of bass starting at 1:40 is a slight middle finger to James and Lars?

Don't know but that little rave up section at 1:40 is pretty damn sweet. Didn't see anything like this coming from him.

Umm, in what way does this sound like Load/Reload? I really enjoy those two albums for various reasons (Load was, oddly enough, the first Metallica album I owned), but this doesn't sound like those albums. This is, as mentioned above, very thrashy and sounds very raw. Very impressed with Jason and can't wait to hear what comes next!

Well that was excellent! It is obviously quite thrashy reminiscent of early Metallica and Megadeth, but the guitar work shows heavy influence from not only Motorhead, like previously mention, but also from Voivod. Newsted's time with one of the greatest bands in the world, Voivod, certainly paid off, both in his style and song structure.

Wow, Metallica should get some pointers from Jason. This is sick. So Thrashy, reminds me of Testament.

I like the song, but the drums could've been less loud, and the guitar could've been mixed better.
