John Lydon Labels Damon Albarn's Gorillaz 'Shit'

Punk veteran says music is a 'melange of shit' these days.

John Lydon has branded Gorillaz "shit", saying Damon Albarn's band are not original enough. Lydon made his point in a video interview with NME shortly before taking to the stage at the Benicssim International Festival with Public Image Ltd. Watch the interview here. Lydon admitted he was feeling nervous ahead of his performance, and as a result did not want to dwell on other bands. "I really don't wanna talk about shit like the Gorillaz, you know what I mean?" he explained. "Come on, I'm the originator don't toss us with that." Lydon added: "I think there's less original talent now than 30 years ago. It's much more manufactured. And the shame is I opened so many doors for so many people and they've all foolishly slammed it behind them. so what you get now is a melange of shit." Thanks for the report to NME.com.

Why are these articles even on here? This is a guitar site. John Lydon is barely even a singer. What makes UG think that a bunch of people who play guitar and bass care about what this guy has to say?

I agree with that, sounds more like the article title is twisting words a bit, and it never says that the last paragraph is even aimed at Gorillaz. But yeah, I'm over seeing articles of musos supposedly bagging musos, this is hardly news.

That's subjective and purely a matter of opinion. There are plenty of far more original musicians out there doing a lot more than some fairly generic sampling and beat-generation... Trent Reznor, Brian Eno, John Frusciante, Thom Yorke, Bjork, Mike Patton... to name but a few. In my opinion UNKLE and assive Attack are far more relevant and groundbreaking than the Gorillaz, whose main selling point seems to be some rather well animated videos for their singles. In reference to the detractors of punk - maybe you should firstly examine the influences of some of your favourite bands before uttering anything about relevance and importance. As for the butter ads... I leftthe UK more that four years ago and haven't seen them, but in the same respect Lemmy has done exactly the same, licencing Motorhead songs (mainly Ace of Spades) and appearing in ads for Kit Kat, Walkers and financial services over the years. Iggy Pop appeared in bloody insurance commercials. Slash is promoting a radion staiton in Australia. Does it make that much difference to anything they do musically - not really. They are all public figures that can do what they damn well please. And finally, sure, the Sex Pistols weren't the most original band in the world but they have one hell of a legacy considering there has onle been one studio album released. Lydon then went on to form PiL - bearing in mind that was over 30 years ago and the music they produced - far more original than anything Demon AllBran has done in his entire career.

Lydon probably doesn't realise this because...PUNK is a load of wank...by which I just mean The Sex Pistols.

Who HASN'T he called shit? Besides his beloved Sex Pistols and P.I.L., of course. The guy doesn't know what he's talking about, never has, never will. Needs to grow the hell up. Can he not face that fact that his own band is f*cking terrible? And I thought Gorrilaz's first album was original - the rest were too commercialised.

Gorillaz's first album is more amazing than anything John has been in, is in, and will be in. John, you sold out to butter, man! Your no longer considered "Punk" in anyones eyes! Only you, my friend, are the only person who still thinks you're punk! So leave the talented ones alone! Albarn/Gorillaz, and go get more meida coverage by blasting some more bands. Maybe you should say Dio wasn't a metal God or The Beatles were "shit" and see how long you'll last before anyone will consider anything you say "Important", all you're saying as of late is "This band/musician is better than me, let's go all punk rock and bitch about them!" Sex Pistols were the most overrated band in my opinion.
Hahaha, +1. Loving all the butter digs...

    It's much more manufactured.

'I'm the "Originator"' - I'm sure Pete Townshend has something to say about that - "Who The F**k Are You?"

I agree with Lydon, i bet Gorillaz, Blur and other bands like them will be forgotten after a couple of years, yeah somebody will listen to them but not as used to be. But bands like Sex Pistols or Nirvana or Led Zeppelin or Guns n Roses will always stay..

I pretty much stand in the same zip code as that too. Lydon is right but if youre a dick about it nobody is gonna listen anyways. So quit talking Lydon...

Well,Lydon posts tend to be misinterpreted a bit here and in general. That's probably his casual way of talking and let's face it,Lydon can't help but be Lydon. He was an ***** in the 70's and he's still an *****. The Sex Pistols,as an act, were far more influential than anything Albarn has produced,it's basically the roots of punk rock as we know it,and that's why people keep talking to and about him. Those are tabloid-like news really.

Perhaps someone can clear this up but how are the Gorillaz the "most innovative music act out there"? I mean, from what I've gathered listening to their music, they're pretty standard pop/hip-hop fare, and they're certainly not the first act to use a virtual performance. I'm not questioning their quality, but I'd hardly call them the most innovative or talented act out there.

He needs to show people that he's still an angry punk, despite advertising butter. Punk is much more about the image than the music. That's why he talks out of his arse all the time.

With the Sex Pistols, yes. But he's released plenty with Public Image Ltd. Just saying, you should get your facts straight before you come in making an arrogant post like that. But then, speaking of arrogance, Lydon has it in spades. I even agree with him and I think he's a prick in this article. It really detracts from what you say when you say it in a hateful, arrogant way, even when you're completely on the ball.

it sounds like he used shit more in a "hey dude what's up?" "same old shit" Also I doubt people really care if john lydon is trying to feud with people who don't even seem to have a beef with him.

The sex pistols were manufactured lol They were practically the backstreet boys. But he's just trying to use seniority in a conversation.

Why is everyone getting so upset? I'm a big Blur fan, but the new Gorillaz album is fairly dire. And sure, there may only be one Sex Pistols album, but it's still better than anything Albarn has ever done.

I don't know, aside from Plastic Beach, Demon Days and S/T were pretty fugging original to mee.

When is Lydon going to finally realise that Damon Albarn is probabley the most inventive and creative musician in the game right now.

Bit full of himself isn't he? I mean, Sex Pistols may have been influential (I don't know, I'm not a punk fan) but saying that he alone opened the doors for people smacks of arrogance to me, especially when he spends his time advertising butter.
