Krist Novoselic Says Female-Fronted Nirvana Shows 'Conjured Spirit of the Band'

Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic has hailed last week's Nirvana reunion performances as a success, saying that the all-female line-up at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction "conjured the spirit of the band," NME reports.

As reported, Lorde, St. Vincent, Joan Jett and ex-Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon joined the remaining members of Nirvana – Novoselic, drummer Dave Grohl and guitarist Pat Smear – for a special performance to mark the band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 10.

Writing about the night, Novoselic published a blog post online in which he writes: "I feel we conjured the spirit of the band, and we could not have done that alone. This, for me, is a bittersweet notion as we all miss Kurt so much. But considering we were inducted, the show had to go on. Joan Jett was first on my list to be out front. I spoke to Dave about it and he ran with the idea of having all women lead. We felt that would be a good tribute to Kurt and what Nirvana was about."

The band followed their Hall of Fame performance by playing an intimate show at Brooklyn's Saint Vitus where they were joined by a series of guest singers, beginning with Joan Jett, who opened the show with "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Breed," "In Bloom" and "Territorial Pissings."

Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis, Deer Tick's John McCauley and Kim Gordon also appeared at the tiny gig, which had a capacity of 230. Watch the footage of joint Nirvana/Jett performance of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" below.

Regardless to who would have sung/played guitar for Nirvana at the hall of fame there would have been complaints, Even if somehow they managed to resurrect Kurt Cobain lol, Was good seeing the surviving members play together though =)

Bet Shaun Morgan's pissed he wasn't asked. Was probably sitting by the phone waiting to see if he would be offered the position

Spitting out his bourbon soaked cereal at the sight of women stealing the gig he focused his whole vocal career on lol

I can only imagine the rush Krist and Dave get from playing those songs together..

I'm glad they went with these singers rather than the ones everyone thought were obvious choices like Shaun Morgan or that puddle of mud dude.
    seance
Yeah. They don't embody the spirit of Nirvana or what they were all about. It's what Krist was getting at. Those other guys, more or less, just copy them on a surface level.

Now i'm not the biggest Nirvana fan however i thought the performance was pretty cool! Joan Jett had a really great attitude with the song same way Kurt did i enjoyed it!

    She has NO tits.
    theclassicrock
Because that's what's important when it comes to singing.

Dude, how far would Dolly Parton would have went with Joan Jett's titties? I accept your apology in advance.

^ He's got a point to be completely honest. I remember hearing about Dolly Parton in the news a few years a go and the only questions they had to ask regarding her tour was 'whether the size of her breasts hurt her back on stage'.

Not really. The only point is that a helluva lot of bellends care way too much about tits. Apparently including that one just there. It's a credit to Jett that she got anywhere without huge tits to get money out of pathetic scum****s with a world view precisely the size of the nearest woman's chest.

Thanks Captain Sav-A-Hoe. It's not really a credit to Joan Jett that she had success without tits. She had that success because she was in a girl band, The Runaways, in which all of them but her had tits. Maybe check your history before you go all, "Women's rights" on people.

You're a piece of shit. End of story.

I'm also a national working documentary film maker that works with 2013 Prime Emmy Winners (Modern Family), and 2014 Grammy Nominees (Jordan Rudess) that travels the country helping expose toxic waste dumps in residential neighborhoods, giving all of my income away to help the homeless, and toxic waste poisoning victims. If that makes me a "piece of shit" then so be it.
    Ultraussie
    That was relevant
    SofaKingMatthew
It was relevant. When some ignorant ******* calls someone a piece of shit the person has a right to respond with the truth in order to show people who the real "piece of shit" is.

I guess you are king of shit mountain

I mean... I am. I worked and suffered as an artist for many years for that. Do you think things like that get handed to you? I spent the whole week working on helping people, working on finding someone a kidney, and I come back here to this. Maybe instead of spending time on the internet tearing people down you too could stand up and do something awesome to make the world a better place and feel proud of your accomplishments rather than sitting behind your computer being pissed off because the world hasn't recognized your "brilliance." Also, I have been very modest. I've been here for a while and have never said shit about what I do for a living until someone called me a "piece of shit" for making a joke. I am, in fact, someone who has worked hard enough, and earned enough in life no one would ever treat me that way in real life. The fact that it's happening here shows the real quality of your character.

Hold on, let me go back in time and make her do a breast reduction, then come back and let you know.
    bobbyk1978
Pretty far, considering she didn't have the big titties until after her first few albums which were, btw, insanely successful in their own right.
    zalant
Agreed! I never had the impression that Jett's success was any sort of carryover from the Runaways. She has just always rocked and never wanted to do anything else besides rock.
    jaypelzer
2 things: 1. This post was hilarious. And more hilarious that people took it seriously. 2. Do some research and learn about how Dolly's tits have nothing to do with how many hit songs she's written for herself and other people.

Was an awesome night! It was awesome to see Dave on the drums playing these songs!

that joan jett performance is absolutely terrible. i don't really get the point of the whole female fronted line up thing. there's plenty of decent male vocalists that could have paid tribute to kurt too it seem's like a bit of a publicity stunt so people are talking about it
    USCENDONE BENE
Nirvana was known for playing pro-women's rights shows/events, they were always very much for and associated with that (see: Riot Girrrl/Bikini Kill etc.)
    seance
Yeah, if people don't get that, they kinda missed the whole point of Nirvana and what made them so great.
    CultofSG
I definitely agree with this and liked the general idea of having female singers. I will still say that the Joan Jett performance is laughable.
    KevTallica
It's also because Kurt was kinda obsessed with the female body, female anatomy, etc. Heart-Shaped Box is about the vagina lol. In Utero is obvious. So having a male singer for this, given that knowledge, would be kinda inappropriate.
    KerryKing01
It dosnt matter if its a gurl or a gy singeing dat band wil olways b s0 crap!
    guitarist5477
I see people down voting him, and commenting angrily back at him. It's obvious to me he's just joking around, but is it obvious to everyone else? Or maybe I'm missing something?
    iommi600
Yeah, it's pretty obvious to me as well. How so many people around here fail to realize that he's a troll is beyond me. That being said, he amuses me.

I want to see the remaining members of Nirvana collaborate with Shaun Morgran (from Seether) to do a semi-Nirvana reunion concert... I think it would be great
