The musician noted:

"The first thing you're gonna need to get you guitar in tune by ear is a reference tone, and that can be anything from just one of your strings on the guitar being close to being in tune; it can be a piano; you can use a metronome, a lot of different things."

    Am I the only one who found it really hard to turn the mechanics with his ears ??

    I just use my memory of what note an "E" is and go from there.  I have good pitch memory.  I also test the strings against the intervals between each other, sometimes using Distortion - the sound modulates in a specific way that if I tune that way I can make almost any guitar handy, well setup or not, sound more than good enough for the task of playing music.
