Metallica To Replace Green Day At Voodoo Festival

The band steps in to "help out" Billie Joe Armstrong who's still in rehab.

Metallica have replaced Green Day at New Orleans' Voodoo Music & Art Experience later this month.

The heavy metal band have stepped in to headline Saturday, October 27 while Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong focuses on his rehabilitation process. Metallica revealed they agreed to take over the slot to "help out" fellow singer.

Guitarist Kirk Hammet told Fuse: "We discussed it between the four of us and we all said, 'Yeah'. It would be a great thing for us to do and it would also be great to help out Billie Joe because he's a friend of ours and we love Green Day. If we can help them out in any way possible, we're always happy to do it because we love those guys."

Meanwhile, in a statement, drummer Lars Ulrich said: "Our good friends and fellow Bay Area residents Green Day had to unfortunately cancel their plans to be there, so we are more than happy to fill in for them in our own unique way."

Billie Joe Armstrong checked himself into rehab for substance abuse last month after an onstage meltdown during the band's performance at iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas. Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt subsequently insisted that the band had been forced to amend plans so they could "put the life of our friend in front of everything" but was adamant that the singer would pull through despite his current issues, adding: "We're still getting ready for the next phase."

The rest of the "¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tré!" album trilogy will be released in two more stages, with the second LP, "¡Dos!" coming out on November 12 and "¡Tré!" on January 14, 2013. Green Day will also play a huge UK stadium show next summer. The trio will headline London's 60,000 capacity Emirates Stadium on June 1, 2013.

Thanks to NME for the report.

Will they play some Green Day songs la Metallica? That would be nice.
"Am I just paranoid or am I THE TABLE?"
That'd be pretty cool, especially since Metallica plays one cover per concert. Plus as a cover band, they are top notch!
I don't enjoy Green Day, but that was the first thing that crossed my mind when reading this and it would be something fun to see!
I think a GD song by Metallica sounds like: Do you have the timezzza??? To listen to me winezzz YEAH!!! About nuttin' and everythingyeah! ALL AT ONEZZZZ YEAH!!! they will make it epic for shurezzza!!!
I love seeing/hearing about bands getting on. It's a fresh change from the arguments we get between GnR/Slash, Queensryche/ Geoff Tate's Queensryche.
    Lmao, successful troll.
Thank you for recognizing it. I love nothing more than to get an offended reaction from Green Day or Blink 182 fans. It entertains me that people will get so up in arms over a band.
It entertains me that people get so excited about being dipshits and making a "successful troll" on a page where it's obviously going to be insanely easy to piss people off
Will Hetfield throw random tantrums about how he's been around since 19-****ing-81 though?
There was a lot less Green Day hate in the comments than I anticipated. Well done UG for recognizing a great band. Also cool that they got Metallica to take their place. Hopefully Billie gets better soon so he can tour the albums!
    Talk about an UPGRADE!!!
Its not much of an upgrade. Green Day throws a DAMN good live show. Even their slower stuff they pace it up when playing live.
I've seen them both live more than once.. all these bands go through NY. and Metallica is a significant upgrade.
I hope Billie Joe will get better soon. Me, being a huge Green Day fan, Want him back out on the stage. I know Mike and Tre do!
I live in New Orleans, and would absolutely love to go see Metallica again, but with them being the only decent band the entire weekend, I'm not gonna pay $107 for one day, just to see one band. The prices are ridiculous.
There was no meltdown, get over it.
He was definitely ****ed up that night. Even in the pre-show interview and stuff he was ****ing around. It was pretty obvious that he was drunk. I was looking forward to hearing 'Fuck Time' but he messed up the solo that night.
Another reason the members of Metallica are my ideals. They can help out other bands that are going through something they have gone through to.
Not a bad trade. It's better than having to cancel and screw everyone over that way. Good luck Billie. Get sorted out and get back rockin
"If people would think that we are sellouts... whatever!" - Sir Clifford Lee Burton
metallica didnt sellout during the cliff era
I agree with you but some people during that time thought so. Especially when Ride The Lightning album came out. Fade To Black was criticized for having an acoustic guitar intro. The others were too for the sudden style change that even I consider far from the Kill Em All sound. and if you thought they sold out after the Cliff era... "Some people say we sold out, Yes... We sold out every show" - Jason Curtis Newsted
Why is earning a living off doing what you love selling out?
I don't get the whole rehabilitation shit. I never heard that Billie had seriuous problems till the iHeartRadio "meltdown". Let's Metallica will do a good job!
It makes total sense if this was a publicity stunt, I mean it happened conveniently the day before Uno's release, and Billie Joe has been sober for some time as far as I heard.
So, not to seem like a downer here, but I assume that Metallica will now receive the paycheck that Green Day would have. When opportunity knocks, right? This all make me more and more nervous about their show here in late November, to which I have tickets.
so, because they will recieve a paycheck for a show, that means something bad? Im sorry, i dont get it.
its almost sad now how anyone will take any attempt to make an attack on metallica, not matter how ridiculous it is
I wasn't intending to "attack Metallica". Y'all misunderstand, or perhaps I phrased it incorrectly. What I was going for was more to point out the money side of things. The article made it seem all brotherly love and flowers and puppy dogs. "We love Green Day...happy to step a brutha the day...ect...oh yeah, and we're gettin' paid!!" I love Metallica and if I were them, I would do it in a heartbeat. I'm not begrudging them $$ and all that -- they've earned it! I guess perhaps it just surprised me a bit that no one had already pointed out the money angle, with all of the Lars-bashing that normally goes on around here.
I don't think either band is in a position to be particularly bothered where the money for one show goes.
Metallica is filthy rich. They have more money than they can spend in their lives. I'm pretty sure they don't have to worry about getting paid for a show.
Metallica's Kirk Hammett said in a interview that they have to tour to make money... And he said that just a couple of months ago! They have money, but they are using those money on touring equipments and stuff.
man what's up with green day?...they are becoming the new KISS...full of gimmicks...where do i start? first 3 albums, then the meltdown...a tv show, getting metallica to kiss their ass...and it goes on...
Not to be insulting towards Billie and GD, but yeah, this is a much better choice. Hoping that he'll recover soon enough.
Really UG? Deleting my comment because I make a joke about Green Day appealing to 13 year olds? You can't say I'm wrong.
Wow, idk but reading that sounded like they were desperate. "If we can help them in ANY WAY POSSIBLE". Almost like they worship Green Day or something which would just be strange.
