Electro-pop stars Mgmt are under pressure from their record label to change their musical style following the release of their last album, Congratulations. The band shot to fame upon the release of their 2007 offering Oracular Spectacular, which landed them a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist, while their track Kids also received a nod. The duo released the follow-up Congratulations in April (10), but the musicians admit bosses at their Columbia label were less than impressed with their new sound and have vowed to take tighter control of their next album. Andrew Van-Wyngarden tells Scotland's Daily Record newspaper, "I definitely think our music will change in the future because Congratulations is almost two years old now. We have some ideas and have been talking about possible directions of where to go next. "We are just in much more positive mental states than when we wrote Congratulations. We're less anxious. We've been looking at relationships with the label during the recording process and it's quite different this time. They'll be more involved and not give us as much freedom." Thanks for the report to Contactmusic.com.

UnaLaguna : Animal Collective are the band MGMT wish they were. no way man. you cant say that. i love both bands very much but not at all. their music and sound is completely different! mgmt-psyc pop focused on making you bop. AC-extremly textured, focused primaraly on amazing focal parts. dollyDagger : its been like 2 days since the release of the new album. what are they on about "its been 2 years" since congratulations? anyone? yeah man i dont get this, i mean, i picked mine up in april. just checked wikipedia April 13th 2010. really i think the whole article is something they are answering to impress the label, but when it comes time to record, they will do what they want.

I think Congratulations was better than oracular... But sellouts? Maybe you should know something about a band before putting a label on them, lol. Going from making the most easylistened pop, to some mixture between 60's psych, new wave and post-punk, while at the same time containing their original sound is kind of a commercial suicide. And they knew it. Sure it sucks that they even give the recordlabel a say, but still.. Sellouts? I can't remember seeing any band that has ever alienated like 80% of their fanbase, and knowing it.

Saw these guys performing on SNL one night and they sounded HORRIBLE. Like, "wall of noise" horrible. Perhaps it was just that performance, but I've heard other people say shitty things about them live. I don't like these guys very much.

I agree I don't like them, but that doesn't mean they're not good.. I have friends who loved their last album.. Maybe they're not selling out as much as we think.. I mean, he told a newspaper.. Or at least we're told he did

I don't see how Congratulation was durasticly different enough to be worried, it was still MGMT and that's all that matters. From what I know Columbia aren't one of those labels that strangle their artists into artistic death so I'm quite surprised about this :S

Congratulations is awesome. It sucks that bands with the courage to do something different are always beat down by people who want the same regurgitated radio pop garbage all the time.

I don't like the sound of this. I didn't like Congratulations as much as their first album, but Congratulations wasn't bad. I agree with one of the comments saying the songs were kinda awkward.

I dont listen to the band even though they got 2-3 killer tunes off that first album. What I want to comment about is how weak it is for a label to even threaten this to a band let alone actually go through with it. Needs to sound more like Nickelback or Foo Fighters to be a good album? eat a dick. I hope this band gets away from these corporate morons and finds a label that will work with the band instead of dictate.

Their songs can be catchy, but they're not all that creative anyway. My friend got me to listen to them by comparing them to Minus the Bear. (If you've heard them... you'll know how good a comparison that is.) Too poppy for me, gets boring fast. Sucks that the label is taking over though, I hate when artists don't have freedom over their own sound. It becomes less 'music' and more 'product' though I guess that's the point of pop anyway.

MGMT is so garbage. Why the **** wouldn't you want your freedom for your music. music is self expression... "We are just in much more positive mental states than when we wrote Congratulations. We're less anxious. We've been looking at relationships with the label during the recording process and it's quite different this time. They'll be more involved and not give us as much freedom." Dear god. Is it just me or are they basically saying their label is gonna freakin make the album for them?? shits redicilous! why are they so big? god! they SUCK! first time i heard them i was drunk and didn't even enjoy them, I'd rather listen to Gucci Mane than MGMT. lol.

F***. Congratulations was brilliant. I also really respected their approach to not just trying to make single-worthy music. F*** the label (although I know it's not really that easy).

This is the only time I will agree with a record label. Congratulations sucked. All the songs were just.. awkward. That's the only word I can find to suffice.

wait a second...don't bands usually want the label to piss off? kinda sad actually that they are admitting to needing the label to hold they're hand.

they've recently said in an interview that this is all just a rumor. And MGMt is amazing, screw off.
