Mike Portnoy To Split From Avenged Sevenfold
23
Mike Portnoy, most recognised as the former drummer and producer of Dream Theater, has announced to fans that he will no longer be providing the drums for metal outfit Avenged Sevenfold. To take the quote directly from Portnoy himself: "Yes, the rumours are true... sadly my time with Avenged Sevenfold has come to an end. The band has decided to carry on into 2011 without me... I had a great time with them throughout 2010, but it was their choice to end the relationship at the end of 2010 as was always the initial plan. "I had an awesome time on stage with the guys every night and have so many cool memories from the experience with them... I am proud to always be part of the A7X family and history. "I also adore the A7X fans and totally appreciate the way they welcomed me aboard and were so loving and supportive during my time with the band... thank you! "As far as my future, I am excited by the endless musical possibilities that lie ahead of me... my love for music runs very deep and my taste is very broad and ecclectic which will give me the chance to explore many different things and collaborate with many great friends and artists I admire and respect... "Happy Holidaze to you all and c-ya in the New Year." Having recently left Dream Theater, and no longer touring with Avenged Sevenfold, Mike Portnoy has been showing a lot of excitement as to potential future projects. Perhaps, in the future, we will be seeing more of Liquid Tension Experiment, or any of Portnoy's other numerous Progressive ventures. One thing is sure, having been given the award as the Best Progressive Rock Drummer 2010, not many doors will be closed on him. Reported by Tom Colohue

I was really hoping to see MP work on A7X's next album...oh, well... that would be interesting, but i dont see it working out Mike has alot more writing experience, will try to write stuff is more proggish and a different direction from A7x normal writing style, while A7x will try to write more Hard Rock/Metal. i just dont see it working out because mike just cant sit there and take orders during a whole studio session. You don't need all that to explain what you mean. To put it simply, Mike will try to write good music while A7X will write trash. The two won't combine. Wow, that's weird. I love Avenged Sevenfold, and I was about to defend them...but then I saw your profile and saw that you're not only a girl, but an attractive girl at that. I not longer want to argue with you. How strange... Plus your music is pretty cool, too.
Hah, I would debate, but taste in music is so subjective it'd be quite silly to, people like different things. Not the most mature comment, but yea, cool profile and playing. And holy crap you're 2 days younger than me.
    by will alone
A7 fold was just tired of Portnoy stealing the show all the time, because its obvious hes on a different level.

I wish he would just swallow his pride and go back to DT. You know that;s what this comes down to anyway.

Seriously. I's seeing them at Soundwave in Aus in Feb, was really looking forward to seeing them play with Portnoy. I'm not happy about this.

does he have any idea how many people would kill to drum in either of those bands? and i still wish things were like there were a year ago. my 2 favorite drummers in my 2 favorite bands. kinda depresssing, especially considering how much each of them brought to their respective bands

Seems to me, Ol' Mike's been having a bit of a nid-life crisis, and I also suspect from interviews, production credits etc, that he has quite a dominating personality, especially in the studio, maybe this came to a head, also, quite an age gap, maybe they simply, didn't click as people u know? So a parting of the ways has come about, I'm not an avenged sevenfold fan by anymeans, but out of this whole DT-Portnoy-A7X triangle, they seem to have acted the most mature.

Personally though I thought he would have left after getting bored of playing in 4/4 all the time. How I bet he misses the good ol 7/4 and 9/8's

i'm sorry, but didn't he leave DT with the sole intention of joining Sevenfold? I love the guy, but he must be feeling like a huge douchebag right about now.

Love A7X, but I'm some glad they are using someone new, you have no idea.. He butchered their old songs..

Good thing I'm missing Avenged Sevenfold during Soundwave then. Portnoy not being there would lessen the blow.

Are you guys sure he is already gone, or is it that he will be gone when they're done with the tour?

I remember all my friends saying Portnoy was a sell out who just wanted to play with avenged sevenfold. And all you guys were saying pretty much the same thing. I also remember me saying those guys are ****tards. Well... Bout time to be uh hittin the ol' dusty trail.

bands with abreviated names suck. Dt? A7x? Why doesnt anyone call iron maiden IM? Nerdy, not cool. Whats next, e-mc squared?

he did so not write this quoted stuff... as for the band, why the **** would they kick him out? i know it was only supposed to be 1 year, but come on, why would you not just make him your full time drummer?

Last time LTE made an album, one of them ended up joining DT, and I'm pretty sure no one is capable of replacing Myung so...

Because Mike Portnoy came on as a hired gun, a temp drummer, and they felt it was time to find someone to fill The Rev's chair in a more permanent position? And let's face it, Mike's skill set would be limited in Avenged, he'd probably get bored of it in a while, and he's at least twice as old as most of the band's members, so it seems like a fairly natural decision.

A7x explained this on their facebook page. They basically said with portnoy A7x will always be Mike Portnoy feat. A7x. They dont want to be in his shadow. They also stated they have another drummer lined up that will not officially be a member of the band, but they will see where it goes. No word on who it is. On a side note: what happened with the 23+ minute solo petrucci was gonna put on the new album? Any news on this?

ahaha to all of you who are on your man-periods and hating on either band. first off they are 2 different bands in 2 very different genres. comparing them is like comparing apples to....walnuts. 2 highly different things. lets please grow up and past this? Second all you so-called fans of Avenged- go read their website or facebook. It says it all their. They are looking at several people and plan on taking one out with them in '11. he may be permanent he may not. thank you and have a WONDERFUL day/evening/night

Dream Theatre already has a new drummer guys. They have not released his name yet but they said they he is very good and there glad to have him. Im sad that mike left. He was a very very good drummer if you ask me. Im just wondering what a7x is going to do without a drummer again. And where mike is going to go now that he is out of both a7x and Dream Theatre.
