Nightwish Split With Anette Olzon

Singer Anette Olzon has split with Nightwish in a spirit of mutual understanding, the band says.

Singer Anette Olzon has split with Nightwish in a spirit of mutual understanding", the band says.

The move follows an online rant where she criticised the Finnish band for performing a show without her at the weekend. She missed the Nightwish show in Denver, Colorado and was temporarily replaced by support band Kamelot's backing singers Elize Ryd and Alissa White-Gluz.

Olzon told fans she'd been admitted to hospital with suspected stress complications, during which doctors discovered a cyst in her liver which would require further treatment. She returned to action the following night in Salt Lake City, Utah, and afterwards said: "Sorry for not being in top form, but i did my best at least".

Later she blogged her displeasure over the previous show having gone on without her, saying: "I was never asked if it was okay they used Elize and Alissa. I don't think it's a good decision they made. I'm sorry for those of you who came to see the whole band but got something else. The decision wasn't mine.

"To think the show is more important than the humans in the band is, for me, totally not in this world. This is just music. Rihanna wouldn't ask Britney Spears to sing for her if she was ill".

Now Nightwish have confirmed the split with Olzon, who joined in 2007 after the popular Tarja Turunen was fired. The band say: "Another chapter of the story has ended today. Nightwish and Anette have decided to part company in mutual understanding, for the good of all parties involved.

"In recent times it has become increasingly obvious that the direction and the needs of the band were in conflict, and this has led to a division from which we cannot recover."

The band have vowed not to miss a show on their Imaginaerum world tour, and have brought in Netherlands singer Floor Jansen, of After Forever and Revamp Fame, to complete the schedule.

Nightwish add: "We forever remain excited about the adventures to come, and we are extremely proud of the two beautiful albums and the wonderful shows we shared together [with Olzon]".

The band's Imaginaerum movie, which receives its world premiere on November 10, was recently completed. Based on the Nightwish album of the same name, Olzon said last week: "I have seen the movie for the very first time, and I can just say that I really liked it! I cried in the end - yeah, sensitive as I am. It was just amazing to see it all finally finished".

When Olzon joined Nightwish in '07, a few eyebrows were raised due to her background as the vocalist in Swedish AOR band Alyson Avenue.

Not happy about this. So now we get to hear more endless debate about Tarja vs Anette, and Floor, and whoever thet bring in as their next singer? I doubt Tarja will be asked to rejoin, or would even consider it. I wonder if Anneke van Giersbergen could be persuaded to join? ANY album featuring Anneke is better for it.
Bullshit is going to fall from the sky AGAIN! I love both singers and enjoy all NW albums... Lets hope that the next singer doesn't get all the same things as Anette did. Maybe Marco should sing and be done with it LOL

I've already posted on the forums about my view. But anyways, I loved Anette's voice. It was beautiful. Very sad about this.
Not again?! In that case, Marco can be their official lead vocalist if they cannot recruit another official vocalist for them other than those people mentioned in this article.
Hoping they can keep it together without a complete breakdown, I've got tickets for Birmingham in November :-(
I am shocked. I was at the show in Salt Lake and they all seemed to have great chemistry and Annette sounded great!
Okay, I actually attended this concert in Denver, and I can tell you it was a hard decision for them to make to do the show without her. They had to come on stage to a sold out crowd of several thousand people and tell them either the show was canceled or they might be able to put something together where the Kamelot backup singers did a few songs and they played a lot of instrumentals. The entirety of the crowd agreed that a show without Anette was better than no show at all. Everyone there had her in their hearts and minds for the entirety of it. We were just trying to make the best of a bad situation
    1. The correct adjective is "Dutch", not "Netherlands". 2. Annette is right, at least in that the show is considered way too important these days, like in all aspects of life. What ever happened to humanity? 3. This situation sucks. Annette leaves Nightwish, Alanis Morissette steps in for Green Day (dear God, that was terrible ) and Van Halen will be out of the running for a while, maybe forever. It's a crazy time for rock, that's for sure. 4. Isn't Elize Ryd from Kamelot the same Elize Ryd who is the lead singer for Amaranthe? She's a damn fine singer, and hot too
Well, the good news is, their next single is going to sound extremely angry. Again.
WTF is that? Annete leaves Nightwish, Foo Fighters on hiatus?
Lets wake up.. Annette was in the hospital, you have 2 women from Kamelot come out with the lyrics on paper they could have cancelled or changed the date. This was planned.. You don't have Floor Jansen waiting in the background with 1 day notice to get to the states and sing the songs... I feel bad for her, she has 2 children and did try her best if you liked her or not. This is a greedy band with NO CLASS. Does anyone have a way of writting to these ass clowns. I bet they cancel PAIN from the November concerts because they are cowards. I hope if they don't she comes out and sings Follow Me with PAIN.

Isn't it common practice? That's what they do with every other band I know. And movies too.
What famous band keeps a backup singer.. Metallica? Who would that be? What type of bands are you talking about? Bar?
I just saw them less than two weeks ago and the band seemed happy and healthy. I wonder what was happening internally that made them decide to split, especially after Imaginaerum was such an amazing album... It'll be interesting to see what they do next. Personally, I hope they get someone who's diverse; who can sing both Tarja and Anette's songs well and use a combination of both vocal styles on new material.
I know Floor from doing the operatics on Devin Townsend's song Pandemic, and she absolutely killed it, whether or not it's a permanent place she'll end up having in Nightwish I don't know, but she'd be a damn good fit if it was!
    tarja tarja tarja
Tarja is Nightwish. It's like Iron Maiden without Bruce
Sigh. Not this still? If you're that crazy for Tarja, she's put out a few solo albums that are pretty good. But Not as good as what she did with Nightwish. And while I prefer Tarja over Anette myself, the material they did with Anette was good. Imaginaerum is an excellent album. Whoever they end up bringing in to be the 'permanent' singer, I just hope she's 1. diverse enough to handle the mezzo-soprana to soprana range and really bridge the gap 2. going to stick around until the band eventually dissolves and 3. doesn't cause another wave of butthurt fanboys screaming Tarja Tarja Tarja or Anette Anette Anette.
I didn't mean to to start anything I'm not even a big Nightwish fan but the stuff I like is with Tarja. Wishmaster and over the hills and far away to me is Epic. If she came back I would like it if not I'm not gonna cry or be butthurt lol
I was more refering to the multitudes that still post on (for example) Youtube comments like 'bring back Tarja, I hate Anette, Nightwish isn't Nightwish without Tarja, etc etc etc'.
Seriously? Tarja is far from being Nightwish. If any one person would be Nightwish that would be Tuomas. The last two albums have proven that Nightwish can be Nightwish without Tarja. In addition to that, Anette sang very good live (except for perhaps their first tour together), something that can definitely not be said of Tarja.
personally i'm glad this happened. Annette fits this band like a phillips fits a robertson.
