No Doubt are suing Activision - the makers of 'Band Hero' - and want their likenesses removed from the video game.

In papers filed against the games company, the band claim they signed a deal to star as characters in 'Band Hero' and players would have the option of performing three No Doubt songs.

However, the lawsuit states more than sixty songs are available to perform using their likeness - thus breaking terms of their agreement.

No Doubt are especially annoyed that frontwoman Gwen Stefani can be used to sing male songs - including 'Honky Tonk Woman' by the Rolling Stones.

Papers state: "While No Doubt are avid fans of The Rolling Stones and even have performed in concerts with The Rolling Stones, the Character Manipulation Feature results in an unauthorized performance by the Gwen Stefani avatar in a male voice choir boasting about having sex with prostitutes."

No Doubt want to withdraw their endorsement of 'Band Hero' and want to block the use of their name and likenesses in the game.

Thanks for the report to Angryape.com.

Fair enough I suppose. It's those tricksy Activision lawyers. They'll get you every time...

Why are all the musicians getting mad at the Guitar hero realted games lately? Is that the easiest way to get money now? At least they're getting paid to be in the game. Why get mad if they're used in a different song?

Firstly, suing does not mean they want money. REad the article, it states they are suing to get themselves removed from the game, which means at best they will get their legal fees paid if they win, they won't make any money. Secondly, yes they are foolish for signing up to something they clearly did not understand, which puts them pretty close to scumbag sellout territory for me, howver the way they are depicted is their own choice, and they have every right to ask for things to change if they think they are being signed up for something they didn't agree to. It will probably be in the contract somehwere though.

The Band Hero crap is stupid anyway...the first Guitar Hero game was pretty fun, i guess...but all this other crap with drums and singing is just ridiculous, and Taylor Swift is in a video game?...may i ask why?..The games are bad enough, but the people who get all their musical knowledge from these video games are even worse..I'm tired of people calling themselves "Sabbath Fans" because they can beat Paranoid on expert...get a life and listen to an entire album before you call yourself a metal head...

activision is running GH into the ground, yet Beatles Rock band is oneof the most anticipated games of the year! I bet next year will show the same results

I'd just take a wild guess and assume none of these peple ever paly the game. On a side note, I wanna give props to Zakk Wylde for not suing over having doing the Moonwalk.

i can understand where they are coming from here. i mean, how would you like it if you were in a commercial for fender, but then those fender dumb****s decide to slap your face all over some squier advertisements? soon people everywhere would be saying, "hey, your that squier guy!" i wouldnt like that, would you?

You would think after being sued like three times they would have learned. Then again she shouldn't be mad because her character can sing other songs.

hehe. Nice. They should stick to having female avatars singing songs by women, and vice versa. Women avatars playing an instrument is fine, since you couldn't tell what genders fingers are touching the fretboard or drum sticks, but singing is different. I don't want to see Kurt cobain doing no doubt, much like I wouldn't want to see Gwen Stefani doing nirvana. Is it that big of deal? Not really. But still.

Band DJ, Beatles Guitar, DJ Rock, DJ Rock Hero Guitar Band. The monopoly's end is not nigh...which is sad.

If they actually knew what Guitar Hero is, they'd know that this feature has been done for as long as they started putting real people in.

Can these games even be taken seriously anymore? First of all, many guitarists act like it's the end of the world when someone says they like playing them. Second, the games multiply like bunnies. Seriously. And third, there's so many lawsuits over them that artists will soon want their SONGS taken out of the game because they saw a female player playing a guitar part performed by a guy or something ridiculous like that. It's a series that's gotten out of hand, stop giving it publicity and undeserved attention and it will regress to a reasonable state.

Well if I understand this correctly, they ONLY agreed to have 3 No Doubt songs in the game and Gwen as a playable character. Which the game does, so they did not break the terms of agreement. But the contract didn't state that she wasn't allowed to be a playable character for other songs other than No Doubt songs. Activision was sneaky with this one, theres a good chance they will win the case.

Boohoo. I would mind, but it's just a game. It's not gonna hurt you forever. It's not like they're dead, like Kurt.

Agreed. Personally, I'd find it hilarious. I thought Gwen would too, I didn't think she'd be so uptight about it. It's not like the Kurt Cobain fiasco, where the poor guy isn't here to approve on how his likeness is used, instead it's his dumbass wife making the decisions on his behalf. And don't these idiots EVER learn to read a contract before signing it? Where the hell are their lawyers when these deals go down?

People suing over their avatar being able to sing different songs is just plain stupid if it was a cartoon of you ****ing looking stupid you'd feel differently. . . actually i would lmao people are making this too serious (courtney coxs gold diggin ass, now no doubt)
haha wow But yeah, I wouldn't mind being in one of the games, but I wouldn't want my avatar singing songs that don't suit me in any way. And wtf. Band hero? Is that Guitar Hero 6 or something?

^ I agree too, that would suck, however the band should pay more attention to what they are agreeing too. Of course some PR person is going to come to them and say 'Oh yeah we are totally honouring your talent and we really want you in this game' but you don't take his word for it. It took me about 5 mins of playing GH to realize it was shallow garbage, and if they agreed and had integrity they wouldn't sign up o something like that.

If you've spent all those years establishing yourself as a band and as performers, and are told that you are going to be honored by being put into a video game where you perform your songs, then you see the finished product and you're basically insulted by the creators making it so you can essentially become a cover band, yeah, I'd be kinda pissed, too. Would you rather people take your music, that you put your heart and soul into, seriously or would you rather them laugh at you and make you sing songs that go against everything you've fought to establish yourself as? I think it was a shitty move on Activision's part, and I hope No Doubt wins and gets removed from the game.
agreed. i know i wouldn't like it all.

In the Courtney Love case, the contract seemingly allowed the use of Kurt for other songs, but in this one it looks like they weren't supposed to do it but they did anyway. The 'honky tonk woman' bit would actually be considered defamation of character, which is illegal. I don't expect anyone to have read my legal standpoint here, go back to bashing the games because you want to make your dick look bigger on the internet. ...Says the guy trying to show off how much he knows about the legalities of this situation. Ooh, look at you! That would be because I've been studying the music industry for three years in college and I know these laws pretty well by now. The comments on these articles drive me crazy because nobody knows what they're talking about...
Get a life. Studying the music industry in college does not mean you know the ins and outs of a contract. You're not a lawyer.

YAWN. Record companies make most of the money from record sales and give the artist around 1%. Therefore, it is the company that loses out not the artist. Those illegal downloaders will have to pay see the artist live and then they will get their money. Piracy is good. Fact.

Right? Everyone here who's moaning about No Doubt like they're another Metallica is missing the big picture. This isn't a mixup of finer details, a matter of a small amount of money or whatever. 60 songs compared to three? That's a pretty big difference. I mean, if you bought something online for 30 dollars, and instead you got charged 600, wouldn't you be kinda miffed?
