Outkast played their first Stateside set since 2002 last Saturday on the opening day of this year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Watch the performance in full below.
As NME notes, Andre 3000 and Big Boi's show drew a massive crowd to the main stage of the festival, but also mixed reactions, as they played a set relatively low on production values and featuring a host of strange props, including a taxidermy polar bear, a small table and chairs, an Atlanta street sign and a bicycle.
The duo were backed by a small band, including a couple of brass players and backing singers. Arriving onstage at 11. 30pm, local time, the duo opened up their set with "B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)" from 2000's "Stankonia." Their hour and a half long set - which was cut short due to time constraints, making them unable to play the finale of "The Whole World" - also featured "Hey Ya" and "Ms. Jackson," as well as "Rosa Parks" from 1998's "Aquemini" plus "Roses" and "Ghetto Musick" from 2003's "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below."
In the middle of the set, Janelle Monae joined the duo onstage to perform her own track "Tightrope," on which Big Boi was a featured guest star. "I wanna say that this is my favourite group in the world, and what you're witnessing right now is history," said Monae as she left the stage. Other guests included singer Sleepy Brown and rapper Future.
Andre 3000 spoke little with the crowd during the set, though did stop to inform the crowd of a very special presence on the festival site. "One of my idols is backstage tonight," he said. "Prince. Prince is backstage." Prince however did not join OutKast onstage following the announcement.
