Ozzy Osbourne has revealed in a recent interview with Classic Rock Magazine that he has, for the time being, parted ways with guitarist Zakk Wylde in order to pursue a new guitarist and a new sound.

"Well, I'm getting a new guitar player as we speak and everyone has been saying to me for a long time, Get Johnny 5 (the guitarist best known for his work with Marylyn Manson and Rob Zombie)'," says Osbourne. "I tried him at one time and I didn't really give him a chance. We'll see, I don't know. I haven't fallen out with Zakk, but Zakk's got his own band, and I felt like my stuff was beginning to sound like Black Label Society. I just felt like I wanted a change, y'know?"

"I've got a guy from Greece coming in not the musical, the country of Greece but I'm not going to say too much about it, cos I don't know myself at this point," he adds. "I've got a new album, I'm working on it as we speak. I've got a studio at my house and I've got a guy called Kevin Churko, the guy that [produced] the last album he's great to work with."

Whether this marks the end of Wylde's career with Osbourne is still up in the air. After all, this isn't the first time the singer has worked with other guitarists since hiring Wylde in 1987. Ozzy has also made it very clear in the interview that there were no hard feelings between the two and that he just wants to try something different. But what about the material Zakk has already recorded for Ozzy's upcoming album?

"Oh yeah. Zakk came down and did a bunch of stuff and I don't know if I want to use it but I've got it there if I do," Osbourne says. "And this Kevin Churko is a bit of an all-rounder so I'm getting back to basics in some respects. One thing about a guy who can't do all the finger-tapping stuff is that he plays better on the riffs cos it's not all [hums riff for Iron Man followed by over-the-top widdling]."

Even though his work with Ozzy Osbourne may have been cut short, Wylde will still remain busy as his band Black Label Society is about to embark on their "Pedal To The Metal Tour 2009" which will hit cities all across the United States later this month and into September. The full list of dates can be seen at the band's website. The band is also said to be working on a follow-up to 2006's "Shot To Hell."

So Ozzy is....not pale and creepy? Albeit, I don't find Ozzy creepy, but he is pale as hell, and Idk why you find John 5 creepy; he's as personable as can be, he just doesn't sing/have a mic so he can't show it on stage.

I'm not feeling the idea of John 5, fine guitarist, but not really suiting for Ozzy I don't think :-/

thats what i was thinking when he said he got a guy from greece, now i know theres a fair few good greek guitarists (having lived there for 4 years) but Gus was the first that came to mind, sure would be interesting, but i'd love to see the oz man give buckethead a chance the guy is just insanly amazing on a guitar!!!

ozz man be making a mistake, but he might find someone who was as good as randy rhoads (the best guitarist ozzy has ever had!). i think its about time for change anyway.

John 5 has the chops to handle Ozzy's stuff I think, but he doesn't really project the right image. As for all these suggestions for virtuoso musicians like Petrucci, Vai, etc... get real. I suppose Wylde was a virtuoso in his own right but he never seemed to overshadow what was really important, the Prince of Darkness himself. Ozzy should concentrate on finding someone who can handle the gig and fill Wylde's place properly without taking away from the main attraction. Getting some talent from overseas would be a good change, definitely not Laiho, CoB has become the Backstreet Boys of metal. I'd love to see someone from the melodic death metal scene come in and take Ozzy in an exciting new direction (ie. less pentatonics and pinch harmonics) but doesn't take away from the music's marketability and alienate longtime fans (ie. Don't hire Seth Putnam)

    +1 Tony is phenomenal

I must say that Ozzy is famous 'cause he's a goddamn smart man. Why? 'cause a keeps a little trick from he's 70's days. He just takes a really good guitarist (from Tony Iommi to Randy Rhoads to Zakk Wylde to John 5) and the guitarist makes him and his music sound better (though I like Ozzy)...

dont forget about Steve Vai, he recorded part or Ozzmosis. Ozzy has held nothing but gold in his guitar slot, adn im sure Zakk's replacement will be no exception

You never now though about buckethead. I never thought him and axl would be able to produce anything that sounded decent but the songs he did record i thought were pretty good. Although Buckethead did leave 1/4 way through "Chinese Democracy", but i do believe Ozzy is much less of an idiot then Axl is. But Buckethead has such a variety in music. But i doubt it will happen.

This. Randy was a beast. Zakk... I don't know. I don't understand what makes him so great. A lot of his music sounds like the same thing over and over again.

In my opinion, I think John 5 would do much better. John 5 knows how to play any song he listens to, or even imitate another artist. I really like John 5's music over Zakk Wylde. That sucks though that Zakk is leaving. Hopefully, he'll come back at some point. Maybe Ozzy should go for Ron Thal, since GNR isn't going on tour for a while, that guy's in a need of a gig.

are you ****ing kidding...have you heard john 5's solo albums... all of zakks solos are from the minor pentatonic scale and that gets old.... it sounds the same... john5 uses many scales to produce his solos...

No one will ever "surpass" Randy. Even if their playing is considered better people will still be like "oh no Randy would be so much better"

Holy Shit. I was just thinking that. Gary was the guy who inspired me to play guitar. My vote is to get either Gary Hoey or Pepper Keenan.

sucks that zakk isnt in it anymore but he's still got black label which is a really badass band. John 5 is pretty cool too. curious to hear his new sound

Personally, I think this will be good for both of them. A chance to try something new for Ozzy(even if it's just for a short remainder of time), and for Zakk to focus inward a bit more and really refine his Black Label sound. Either way, let's not set this in stone just yet. This article was written on the 9th, and Zakk hadn't heard anything about this till he read it himself. Ozz and Zakk are supposed to be meeting about it today(probably already have).

Ozzy knows what he's doing because everyone who listened to black rain realized that it was a BLS ripoff. And seriously at least John 5 original and doesn't do a pinch harmonic every 2 notes.
    rof, so true dude

randy , jake , zakk whos next.Probably wont be as good as these 3 . but so far ozzy has had god like guitar players .

wow pretty bold mood by ozzy but i think it needed to be done. i hope he gets someone awesome. well one thing that may be interesting would be since velvet revolver is on a break maybe slash would audition that might be something new and cool.
    bloodlusting28
i think ozzy needs to get back on the drugs so he can start thinking clearly again. i mean first black rain now he's dropping zakk what the **** is he thinking.

Dudes, I think it's a good think they split now, cuz if the didn't, eventually things would get tense, Sharon would sue Zak for some BS and they'd end up splitting up anyway.

Two caveats: One, there is no Ozzfest this year and there's no indication it'll be next year either. It seems clear to me that Ozzy's been slowly fading the event out. First we had Freefest, then it was a one day festival and now it's just gone. Two, being in Ozzy's band at Ozzfest didn't entirely stop Zakk from playing with BLS. A few years back, BLS actually headlined the second stage of Ozzfest while Wylde was playing with Ozzy's band headlining the main stage.
