Pink Floyd: 'Dark Side Of The Moon' Named Greatest Album Cover

Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" has been voted the greatest album cover of all time, in a recent poll. The 1973 album beat the likes of Nirvana's "Nevermind" and The Beatles' "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" in a survey done by MusicRadar. "The Floyd cover is a reminder of a time when sleeve art meant more than a jpeg a couple of hundred pixels wide in your iTunes library", said Will Groves, editor of MusicRadar.com. Pink Floyd's "Animals" album also made the top-10 of the poll. Meanwhile, Pink Floyd's Roger Waters and David Gilmour reunited on stage at a recent gig in London (May 12). I'm with Somewhere In Time. Also, Reign In Blood needs to be mentioned.

I am not a Stones fan but Sticky Fingers was a great album cover. The cut off denim shorts and zipper was awesome. I cant even imagine what that album would sell for today

But I guess in a sense this is like the episode of South Park where Kyle finds out he is the ugliest kid in class, when really it was a conspiracy for the girls to get something. Just figured I'd throw that idea out there. This list means NO more than a list put together by a bunch of 4th grade girls.

I agree with this list except for Iron Maiden. I have never been able to get into their music, and I feel like their album art is just really corny.

This needs more Yes. Even though I love the Dark Side of The Moon cover, Yes' vinyl covers are so artistic, and way better than most there. You see there was loads of efforts into them and they literally paint landscapes. The cover is sometimes as good as the album!

has anyone clicked on the link for the top 50 list; it's completely different to what UG posted. For example; Number of the Beast is at #30 and In the Court of the Crimson King is at #50

Really? A prog band at 1 and a grunge band at 2 is just going to start a lot of arguments. Release the trolls!

I can't believe no one even mentioned "Abbey Road", it is one of the best album covers ever!

This album cover makes my day, it looks like 50s black metal to me. xD And...Dark Side Of The Moon's just a picture of a prism. Nothing great, and Court Of The Crimson King...eh, I think the art's stupid, I like King Crimson, but...eh. I think Nirvana's Bleach and Soundgarden's Louder Than Love are both great album covers. Nice and simple, you're getting what you see! And I always thought Appetite For Destruction had a cool album cover, not a big GNR fan(I like maybe 4 or 5 songs?) but I think the cover's pretty cool.

The white album? lol Also, Pink Floyd's "Dark side of the moon" voted best cover? That's the only thing it has going for it. Terrible band, awful album

most of these are really dumb winners i mean come on "number of the beast" is the worst cover of all the iron maiden ones, "nevermind" is nothing special at all, the white album is quite literally a joke.

Power slave by Iron Maiden. Led Zeppelin II Deep Purple: In Rock. (lovely pun in that album)

How about Disraeli Gears? Appetite for Destruction? Lennon's "Some Time In New York City" is pretty clever. Physical Graffiti and In Through The Out Door? It's Only Rock N' Roll bas a much better cover than Sticky Fingers. And if they're going for iconic, where's Band on The Run? Terrible list. Also, gigwise needs to fix their website, I have to refresh the page at least 5 times just to be able to read it.

Otherwise, great list. sucky artwork for a sucky album You just go ahead and shut up. Think about music, think about people, and look up the word 'subjective'. Ignoramus!
arent you the ignoramus for saying that he cant think that piece of shit album sucks? your a hypocrite

Trilogy by Yngwie Malmsteen. Nah, but these lists always claim those classic rockers (like the Beatles) are the greatest ever. The Beatles were just high out of their minds all the time. They should start judging based more on what is the greatest album cover instead of "How many times can we put the Beatles on a list"?

replica_ wrote: I think a lot of the album covers here are just by the very popular bands. I find the list quite elitist. Half the album covers are just inane with no statement whatsoever and I see no true artistic expression in any of it. Take the White Album by The Beatles; It's white...and says "The Beatles" on it, yet it is considered one of the best album covers. I think that true artistic album covers are mainly by the obscure rock and metal bands. And of course, true artistic integrity is very compromised because it doesnt have selling appeal. So the message (if there is any) in the album art is lost. Notice however, that I am using the words "I think" a lot, which would indicate that art is relative (or subjective), which goes to show that my opinion (as well as the opinions of the voters of these types of polls) are worthless. Beauty is in the eye of the holder as they say. I think though, that if I ever got famous, the album art that i would put out would just consist a giant smear of dog shit. Sorta like a huge artistic statement about the whole idea of art and the inanity in it and things like this poll. You know it probably wouldnt do too bad on this type of poll actually lol.
No one asked for a damn thesis to prove to us why popular stuff is crap, so stfu hipster and get off your high horse. On topic, I agree with the majority of this top 10 UG provided in that they are all good covers (as commented, don't see the point of the white album in here, or at least top 10 anyways) but I would probably change the order around a little bit.

I liked it too. Anyway, I mostly agree with the list. Maybe I would add Floyd's Ummagumma.

Shocking that there's no Abbey Road. I'd also (personally) put in OK Computer (or maybe Kid A), Master of Puppets and Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not. Just my opinion though :

Whut? the website states Nevrmind is on the top of the list. Dark side of the moon only comes in at 13...

Heaven & Hell by Black Sabbath,Whoracle from In Flames, Skydancer from Dark Tranquility, The Gallery from Dark Tranquility, Spiritual Healing by Death and And Justice For All by Metallica. My favourite six album covers.

Dark Side of the Moon is nothing special at all. Tonnes of better album covers than most of them on there.
