Plant Slags Off Sabbath

Led Zeppelin icon Robert Plant has compared Black Sabbath to 60s pop star Bobby Goldsboro in a light-hearted ribbing. Zep and Sabbath used to rehearse in the same studios, with Sabs drummer Bill Ward having said Plant and co used to come in and interrupt us and rumours abounding that tapes exist of the bands jamming together in the late 1960s. But speaking on Canadian radio Plant suggests that Sabbath are no more relevant than the man who sang the tearjerking hit Honey and Led Zep drummer John Bonham always told Tony Iommi's outfit they were no good. Plant discusses his early days, saying: Apart from Jimi Hendrix I had to keep clear of a lot of mainstream popular music, otherwise I'd have been running a nice boutique somewhere in northern England now. You could give up really quickly. Asked about Black Sabbath he replies: Who? They'll go a long way and they'll influence a lot of people in Seattle. Lovely, great, yeah. And what would you do without Bobby Goldsboro as well? Bonzo and I thought we were pretty good and we used to bore the pants off everybody telling them we were. Those guys over there Sabbath, if you insist Bonzo used to tell them they weren't very good. Plant also reveals he doesn't own an iPod, explaining: Up there on the Pantheon there are no iPods. I don't use an iPod I have two decks, crossfaded, and sometimes I just DJ for myself. In the full interview the singer discusses the traditional music which inspired him, why he thinks his new Band Of Joy deserves the name of the act he fronted before Led Zep, and hist hatred for 50s pop music and poodle-hair rock even though he had the haircut himself at one point. Thanks for the report to RockRadio.

He's joking people. I'm sure everyone from Sabbath's camp - except Sharon - get that.

If having a record that wins a crapload of awards means you're washed up, then I wish I was washed up too.

Plant was just goofing. Both were different genres really. Sabbath came out of the blues, jazz and a bunch of styles while Zep really wanted to be a folk band. Plant went back to his roots and won't even play the Zep tunes anymore while Sabbath continues on.

What are you people talking about? Plant doesn't have a huge ego, if anything recent interviews have shown him to be a really nice, humble guy. He's just having fun, damn drama on this website all the time.

if i was doing an interview for UG, omfg i would say shit that i didnt mean, because i know you metalhead retards would eat it up and go crazy over it. Whether i think youre stupid or not, doesnt matter because I can say it and theres nothing anyone can do cuz its the internet bitch lmfao

This made me laugh. Anyone that has any real music knowledge knows that both Zeppelin and Sabbath have had a huge impact on Rock music. Plant is not dumb, some of his comment seemed to have a bit of "Tongue and Cheek" vibe. achilles187 could not have stated the obvious better. So to those who just slag one or the other are just foolish.

I don't see Zeppelin being considered the founders of a genre that has lasted over 40 years. That's because Zeppelin did not just stick to one genre. Zeppelin won't be remembered as the founders of a genre, but as masters of a genre, that generally being Classic Rock. Also, Zeppelin keep getting mentioned along with Sabbath and Deep Purple as the pioneers of Heavy Metal, despite the band members constant denial that they weren't metal, and the fact that 1/3 of their work was acoustic.
I guarantee they were thinking "lets play whatever comes out". Just because you arent a genre, doesnt mean you cant spark it. Plus, genres are for name droppers who dont really appreciate music for what it is. Its for people who use music to define who they are, a tool for other people to see what kind of person they are. ever hear someone say "I love all kinds of music except country and rap." ? The degree of this varies though, im not saying all people who use genres are like this.

I like Zeppelin, but Rob's kinda being a douche, Bill Ward wasn't as technical as Bonham, but he was by no means a bad drummer. And Tony was just as good as Jimmy Page. I think he was better, and that the songs he wrote were more interesting. That's just me though. Sabbath is awesome and so is Zep.

Hardly a slagging-off, then. UG's misleading titles win again

Good thing he isn't British, who are known for their depreciating, dry humor, or I'd think he just teasing some old friends.....

Zeppelin got famous ripping off blues and folk artists in their early days. Sure, later they made some nice original stuff. But Zeppelin imo was just the right band in the right place. That torch could easily have been caried by The Stones or The Who. Sabbath on the other hand started a whole new direction. Pioneered heavy rock/metal. Started using big fat riffs, scary notes, downtuning, galloping metal basslines. While Ozzy is nowhere near a vocalist Plant is, still does have a distinct timbre thats insta-recognisable. Thus why I think Sabbath > Zeppelin. Zep still rocks, and Plant most likely is just goofing abouts what he said.

C'mon UG, this is supposed to be a news site, I'm all for opinions at the end of news articles, but lately it's just been shit stirring and flame bating, what is this some celebrity gossip magazine? Grow the **** up UG journalists.

I know it's a joke, I read the thing. But I wouldn't put it past Plant to say something like this. He's just mad Zep never amounted to anything but stealing almost everything they wrote.
    Derrikb
and you cant think hes serious. if for some reason he was, i think he has the right to say w.e the hell he wants about any band. I bet him and sabbath were good friends otherwise we would have heard about a conflict long ago.

sabbath was good until they started doing coke. Zeppelin was always good, dont let Plants attitude tkae talent away from JPJ bonham and page. Technically they were all more capable, and alot more broad than Sabbath, influential idk, but to say either band sucks makes you an idiot, a ****ing idiot at that.

There are plenty of amazing metal bands that don't play power chords exclusively (or even commonly), don't drop tune, or even solo. You don't have to look hard to find bands that DO mindlessly chug away on drop-B power chords and then sweep pick for 20 seconds, but you don't have to look hard to find exceptions to that generalization either. Look, over there, it's Opeth. And if you don't think Black Sabbath was original in any way... holy crap. This isn't an opinion thing: they were revolutionary, at least as much as Led Zeppelin. I love both though, and also manage to pick up on Plant's sarcasm... hint: the FIRST LINE says he's joking. God.
If you were to read my other posts, you would know I knew Plant was joking around. But I can't blame you for that. And, I didn't say Sabbath weren't influential, I said they weren't AS influential as Zeppelin. Sure I don't think they're that original compared to Zeppelin, but I understand their importance in Rock and Metal.

Led Zeppelin are fantastic but...really? I hope he's joking - Black Sabbath are equally as great if not better. I would say more relevant today as well. Besides, people who walk up to other bands to tell them that they suck...are generally dickheads. End of story.

hahahahhahahahahahahahahhahahahahahhahahaha at all these ignorant comments flaming both bands because people dont even read the article
    Slap-happy
A section of an interview is taken, completely out of context and presented in an (almost) sensationalist manner and everyone laps it up and comments on how Page is a dick... People - stop believing every word you read as gospel, get a sense of irony and a sense of humour and find something constructive to do. (They were all friends back in the day).

Pretty sure that was Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck talking in that scenario. And Jeff Beck's quote, not Jimmy's.

Plant was obviously joking. Like, it's really obvious. People just like to start arguments and troll etc. Led Zep and Sabbath are both awesome, for the record. No need to be bitches about it. Grow up, people.

Did anyone read into this at all? Plant was joking around, he said himself that he had to keep his head on straight listening to just Zep and the occasional Jimi because he would end up with a boutique shop. I'm pretty sure he was complimenting all the other bands at that point by saying that he didnt want to get discouraged when he listened to how good they were. Sometimes it's like you idiots only read the title. Aside from that, i'm more partial to Zep, their beautiful melodies, infectious rhythms and astounding musicianship. If I were as good as any of them I'd be a little big-headed myslef!
