Robert Plant is playing the Montreal International Jazz Festival this Friday evening and, beyond the show itself, the music icon will be honored by event organizers. The Montreal Gazette reports Plant will be presented with the festival's Spirit Award during his June 24 concert at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier of Place des Arts in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The award, launched in 2006, recognizes "a popular artist's extraordinary contribution to the musical world." The prize has previously been awarded to other legends such as Paul Simon (2006 winner of the Spirit award), Bob Dylan (2007), Leonard Cohen (2008), Stevie Wonder (2009) and Smokey Robinson (2010). Plant who makes his festival debut this year - will accept the prize from festival co-founder Andre Menard during his 7 p.m. concert. The Montreal show is one of three Canadian dates for the Band Of Joy this week, as they also play Winnipeg (Tuesday) and Ottawa (Thursday). Apparently nobody has let Robert Plant know that he was the lead in one of the greatest rock bands in the history of music. If he knew, maybe he wouldn't be singing this crappy bluegrass stuff.
