Santorum Declares War On Metal?
60
Republican candidate Rick Santorum has declared war on heavy metal. Or rather, that's what thousands of metal fans were fooled into believing over the weekend when they fell for a spoof news story this weekend. The parody on Tyranny of Tradition (warning: ultra slow load times) described how Santorum had been attacking satanism in heavy metal and blamed it for the corruption of American youth. The clues were fairly obvious, but it seems many were prepared to believe that Santorum thought Black Sabbath was a new band, or that metal causes lactose intolerance. "If you listen to the radio today, many of these brand new, so-called heavy metal music bands like Black Sabbath, Venom, The WASP and Iron Maiden use satanic imagery to corrupt the minds of young people," he fictionally said in the parody. It went on to blame metal for the collapse of traditional values, and that it was behind some of the worst crime in American history - including the formation of Obama's recent health bill. And if any readers still believed it, they would surely have realised by the time it claimed metal caused lactose intolerance. The parody went on to say the solution to the trouble caused by metal was to slam dance to performers like Michael W. Smith and Pat Boone. It's kind of amazing that so many fell for this article, but to be honest, we saw the headline and initially had no reason to doubt that a right-wing candidate would have strong views against metal. Of course, anyone who read the parody should have realised it was a joke, but if you didn't, then here's your heads up that it wasn't real.

Even when I thought this was real and didn't read the article yet, I thought this was hilarious. Then I read the article and laughed even more. Stupid Matt Heafy.

Ha ha, trolling metalheads? Didn't metalheads invent trolling? I mean, we are superior intellectually, our music is far greater in size and worth, and the ego of our fanbase could slaughter entire genres, as it has before.

Fun fact: Santorum was coined by Dan Savage to mean the "frothy mixture that is a by product of anal sex". So yeah, definitely a Metal band name.

Just to be fair, it was Tipper Gore who co-founded the much hated PMRC. She is surely not right-wing.

if some politician really tried to kill metal it would raise the popularity, so maybe it'd be smart decision lol

I wish it was real, just so I had more reason to hate Rick Santorum and have other people recognize him for his stupidity.

I can't tell you how many dolts on my Facebook page thought this was real... And not to give conservatives credit, but remember it was Al Gore's wife who was heading that whole movement back then

I believed every word of the article. I was around in the 80's and heard enough asinine BS from the "Jesus Crispies" to never be surprised again or doubt the depths of ignorance coming from their ranks.

It appears that WE have been fooled by the title of THIS story. Yes, I know it has a question mark at the end, but still.

I'm glad so many here have negative feelings about Santorum, and what a crazy born again he is.

I was fooled by it even the part about Gwar Playing at Romney's inauguration... It doesn't help that the blog post re-posted on a Ron Paul Supporter site, which I visited first before seeing the original. It took me about an hour to figure it out after I wrote an extensive and impassioned Facebook status which was immediately liked by some of my more liberal friends on Facebook including my former Astronomy Professor. No word on whether or not my more conservative friends have deleted me. I'll admit that I'm embarrassed to have believed that article.
