Silverchair has returned with a new studio album, "Young Modern." An album that helped them set a record for the most No. 1 albums by any band in their native Australia. (This one makes it their fifth, beating the old record they shared with Midnight Oil). The band is in the midst of a sold out tour Down Under (they'll be back Stateside in Nov) and we asked frontman Daniel Johns to pick some of his favorite tracks from the new album and tell us a little bit about them. Here he is with today's song "Straight Lines". Musically it was about making something with a certain propulsion to it like a traveling song and a song that felt positive, something that made you feel uplifted when you heard it, you know like in the spirit of Midnight Oil celebration-al. I think I was just going for that and it's the first time I've ever tried to write something like that with that had that sort of feel. It's definitely one of the more sentimental songs on the record, but there's also a sense of escapism that I like, like an inherent feeling that 'everything is gonna be alright,' you know, the '60s Motown 'make you feel good' song. Yeah that album would make you feel good if you are a couple chromosomes short and you like watching Barney. Because it is a total SELL OUT PIECE OF CRAP!!! Let me put it this way, it makes Coldplay look like they have more balls!!! That album is WEAK and Silverchair is not ever the same band. Should have called it quits after Neon Ballroom.

Young Modern is a good album. Not their best and awful for people who liked their Nirvana-Pearl Jam-rip-off-period when they were 15. But it's a good album.

Yeah i was totally disappointed by the songs I have heard so far... Like Korade says its got no balls at all. Weak and diluted. Was listening to some older stuff the other day - hadnt heard it in years - powerful songs like Learn to Hate & Israel's son! Bring back that form and they will earn some more respect.

From Frogstomp to Young Modern, Silverchair shit all over any other crappy yet massively popular bands nowadays. And why should they earn any respect from people obsessed with balls?

frogstomp was good, but nothing compared to diorama. That was when they achieved so much, and became so unique. YM is a great album... i dont care what anyone else thinks.

Silverchair have never sold out!! Why would they tell their record company to piss off and record an album with their own money if they were planning on selling out? Surely they would stay with the record company and make the same album over and over again as they know it sells. Anyway YM is great. Can't wait for the new one in 10 years.

not a fan. Daniel Johns is proof that you don't need talent to get anywhere. Good on the bloke for where he is but seriously, he can't play guitar to save himself.

Are you serious he's a great guitarist, and he has to sing really difficult songs at the same time, i'd like to see you play and SING straight lines (good as he can) at the same time.

I don't understand why a band has to be a sellout as opposed to trying something new. I myself enjoy Neon Ball room and everything after it more than frog stomp. I can't believe someone would even consider claiming Daniel can't play guitar. But to each his own. Everyone is allowed an opinion.
