Slash Works Hard To Be Good

Slash insists being dubbed a guitar master is "bulls--t" because he is only a good musician because he works so hard at it.

Slash Works Hard To Be Good

Slash insists calling him a guitar master is "bulls--t." The former Guns N' Roses star is renowned for his musicianship but he insists it is down to hard work, rather than natural expertise and he can always improve his skills. He said: "That whole guitar master stuff, that's bulls--t - I have been working and working on it, and it will never end. It's a work in progress, but I have a great time doing it." Slash - who picked up the Icon Award at last night's (07.06.12) Kerrang! Awards fuelled by Relentless Energy Drink in London - loves performing live and says he has more fun doing so as he is getting older because he is a much more accomplished musician. He added to BANG Showbiz: "Live is predominantly what I got into this for. I love to write songs and I love recording them, but its all a means to an end and that is performing live. "Playing live now, when it comes down to it not much has changed over the last 20 years, but I'm a little bit more coherent these days, and I'm a little bit of a better guitar player, so I guess it's a little more fun." Thanks for the report to Contactmusic.com.

I think this applies to 99% of us, from world-famous all the way down to the guys playing the bars on the weekends.

Slash is such a humble guy and he still makes great music. We need musicians like this to remain relevant in the music industry.

It's all just opinion - I'd rather listen to Slash than either of those two, whether he's technically as good as them or not doesn't matter. Other people will prefer the guys you mentioned. Then it will just become the standard UG argument where everyone names someone obscure and claims they are the greatest, refusing to accept anyone elses opinion.

Slash is a Master... Steve Vai hasn't written anything memorable in 20 years! all mindless noodling. If he put time into composing songs rather than throwing every scale known to man in a song he'd do much better!. Slash is a master at making music that moves a person, I would take Slash's Starlight solo over Steve Vais whole career of meterial.

Wednesday night at Hammersmith Apollo was one of the best ****ing nights of my life! I was right at the barrier in front of him playing all of his solos and it was incredible! Such a great performer

Now, Satch on the other hand...

This is why I love Slash. Dude knows he's not the most technically proficient guitarist but he's got the soul and is willing to work to get better. I don't care who you are, everyone from John Petrucci all the way down to myself could do with some practice.

I've said it before and I'll say it again..... Slash is the best all-around guitar player in rock music today.

Slash has really gotten better over the last few years, his first solo album seemed to give him a good challenge as he wrote songs to fit the styles of the artists he worked with. If anything, he's better now as a live and studio player than ever.

Don't know why. Slash is one of my favorites. Just pointing out how obvious that article title is.

One of my teachers in high school used to say to us: "Never think you are the best. Work every day to be it." And yes, Slash is good as he is because he works hard every single day. He devotes himself to it. That doesnt aply only in guitar playing. If you want to be really good at anything, you should commit yourself to it every single day.

I get where you're coming from man but I think with either of those examples it's still pretty apples and oranges.

The thing here is that while, yeah, Slash does work hard, so have all the greats. Did Eddie Van Halen just pick up a guitar and tap his way to a record deal and all that stuff? No. There's a book about EVH and he said in an interview that all of his teenage years were spent in his bedroom noodling away on his axe. So while yeah, Slash is so good because he works so hard at it, I think it's fair to say he has propelled himself to axe mastery

Petrucci was born a god on the instrument. We doesn't need practice. Otherwise the world will be destroyed.

I was actually just arguing about this today with my aunt. It's not natural born talent. Some of these guys (if not all) are practicing for upwards of ten hours a day for years. That's how they get to be so great.
