Slayer Guitarist Describes Near Death Experience

Jeff Hanneman was an hour from death after a spider bite caused a sudden flesh eating disease, but his metal-loving doctor saved his life and career.

Slayer Guitarist Describes Near Death Experience
27
Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman has detailed his near-death experience this year in a gripping new interview. He explained how he was relaxing in a hot tub when painless spider bite quickly turned into a deadly degenerative skin disease. "Didn't even feel it", he told Classic Rock (via Blabbermouth). "But an hour later, I knew that I was ill." It wasn't long before he could see his own flesh rotting while on the way to the hospital. "The arm was real hot. I got to the emergency room, and thank god the nurse knew straight away what it was. By chance, although it's pretty rare, she had seen a case a little while before. At that point, I was an hour away from death." It transpired that Hanneman had necrotizing fasciitis, a rare but very severe type of bacterial infection that can destroy the muscles, skin, and underlying tissue. "Unbelivably, the doctor was a Slayer fan", said Hanneman. "First thing he said to me was: 'First I am going to save your life. Then I am going to save your arm. Then I am going to save your career'". After emergency surgery and two months of skin grafts and treatment, the risk was onver - but his therapy was only beginning. "I had to learn to walk again," Hanneman says: "I hadn't stood up for a month, apart from anything else. The skin grafts were very painful and all the muscles and tendons in the arm where very weak. That was ok though. I count myself lucky that the nurse and doctor knew right away what had happened to me, because things could have been a whole lot worse."

A member of freakin Slayer with a flesh eating disease. If anyone was gonna have a flesh eating disease, it was gonna be someone from slayer. They could make a whole concept album on this.

That spider was obviously a Justin Bieber fan. Nice to hear of a case where doctors actually know what they're doing, as opposed to the "take this handful of pills and call me next week if it hasn't gotten better" pharmaceutical pimps usually seen in clinics and hospitals.

Do you guys all realize how ****ing hardcore it is to have contracted a FLESH EATING disease from a SPIDER bite? That's hands down the most metal medical condition ever. EVER!

It seems that there's gonna be a song about spiders on their next album =)

Necrotizing Fasciitis? Only Jeff Hanneman can get a disease that sounds like some kind of decaying nazi disorder.

Good job those satanic rituals of their's works - the power of the great Satan must have helped pull him through this ordeal... *said with generous amounts of sarcasm*

I don't think any kind of doctor would have simply ignored rotting flesh.....

Hmm, I wonder what could happen to someone if all their flesh rotted away, putting them at risk of gangrenous infection and all sorts of nasty degenerative problems... maybe they might, y'know, struggle to be alive or something?

I was about to say the same thing. But yeah, I'd like to have that doctor.

See , if it were Kerry King, they would have said Kerry King and not 'Slayer guitarist'.

The doctor should be promoted to Slayers own doctor that join them on their tours. Everybody wins.

Major props to him for coming out at Big 4 Indio. I think that moment put that night over the edge for me! Seeing him shred to Angel of Death with his totally disfigured arm was, more or less, my definition of a 'Metal moment' and I'll never forget it... Who played after them again? Oh, right...

Sounds like one hell of a flesh storm. *badumchee* sorry. Anyways, glad to hear he's ok. Spider bites are incredibly serious. As Jesus Dean said, for once the doctors knew what they were talking about. Too many people have gotten more sick or have even died just because doctors have just sent them off with pills.

Which then goes on to routinely kill people. In fact it has about a 75% mortality rate, and can kill in a matter of hours. Given the rartity of the disease globally, Jeff is one of few people to survive at all, let alone make a complete recovery and retain all his body parts. I read a story about a woman who got necrotising fasciitis and the only reason she survived was because she was so damn fat that it couldn't spread to important parts of her body faster than the doctors could treat it.

You know, whether it's your articls, UG, or it's someone else's that you've just posted here... it takes like 1- minutes to proof read. Honestly, how are you a professional media source if every ****ing article I read has typos all over it?

It's just an expression. === Must've been pretty weird to get out of the hottub that day and find a growing blackish hole in his arm that went down way past the skin. I'm glad he pulled through it and the nurse&doctor were cool.

Even though Slayer sucks, and their music is horrible, I'm glad he's fine. That would have been a shitty way to go, but it might have sucked even more to survive and lose use of the arm.

Before they even try something as demanding as a concept album, I think they should focus on getting back to making good music, first. You know, back to the days of Show No Mercy, or at least Reign in Blood? Back when they were good?

Too bad he didn't turn to spiderman... Just think about the stage shows... And everytime his hand went like this \,,/ he would be hanging from the roof

I find it funny that metal bands with generally "distasteful" images (to the public, of course) are usually really down-to-Earth, humble guys. Slayer kicks ass and I'm glad Jeff got through that ordeal alright. Spider bites can be nasty, and necrosis isn't even the worst thing that can happen. Jeff was very lucky. Maybe Tom was praying for him... (ohhh bit of tongue in cheek there).

Definitely going to create a metal band called necrotizing fascitis. Seriously though, glad he's ok. I've always liked him better than King as a guitar player.
    true_bacon22
Wow I had no idea it was spider bite and it was that serious. But yeah this would seem to make for a pretty ****ing hardcore Slayer song.
