Slayer singer/bassist Tom Araya recently reminisced about the band's early days and the thrash titans' first European tour back in 1985.
The story includes the band crossing the old continent in a rental car in true metal fashion and is well worth checking out. As Araya told Fuse, the memories came back as he recently received a link to Slayer's entire first-ever Belgium concert in 1985.
"I was like 'Oh my God, that is so cool!' The early years when we travelled in a car, a car and truck - those were memorable times," Tom kicked off. "We did our first tour in the US in a car with a paper with addresses and a map. And phone numbers, 'cause you didn't have cell phones, you didn't have pagers. You had to pull over and get to the public telephone and go like, 'Hey, we're gonna be there in about 20 minutes or we're might be a little late,' or whatever."
Continuing in his distinctive optimistic manner, the bassist added: "The first tour in Europe was the same way. They picked us up at the airport, they parked out in the city somewhere in the UK, in London. And they said 'All right, who's gonna sign the rental agreement?' And we go, 'Aren't you our driver?' 'Oh, no' ... And we're like looking around, and they're all looking at me. I was the oldest, so I was probably the only one that could sign the rental agreement."
You can check out the rest of the story below and see Tom talking about "cruising down the autobahn" in a most peculiar way. As he ultimately concluded, "It seems like yesterday, but it was such a long time ago."
