The U2 rocker - who is worth an estimated 400 million - says he devotes so much of his time to charitable projects because he believes he has more money than he deserves to have.

Speaking at the launch of Nike's Lace Up. Save Lives campaign, which raises money for HIV charity (Red) with Chelsea soccer star Didier Drogba, he said:

"These guys are very wealthy. I am very well paid, overpaid and even over-rewarded for what I do. But a lot of these soccer guys are giving something back and they don't need to do that."

Meanwhile, Bono admits he and his bandmates are "delighted and humbled" to have been asked to headline next year's Glastonbury Festival, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

He said: "Everyone in the band is very excited about it. I think it will just be about the music on that day, and that spirit that seems to take over everybody in that sacred ground.

"We'll certainly be well-rehearsed, we'll be coming straight from the North American tour."

U2's appearance at Glastonbury marks their first festival show in 25 years and it will be the first time the group have performed at the world famous music event.

So, you guys are saying he should give everything instead of just several million? Because everyone here gives all their money to charity. I can't believe I'm defending Bono, but I have to say: at least he does something useful with most of his money, he deserves to keep some of it.

For the record, Bono's sunglasses are pretty cheap as far as quality sunglasses go. A decent pair of Rayban's are easily twice as expensive.

There is no way in hell Bono is overrated; Everyone hates him and says he sucks. Or at least they poke fun at his 'save the starving children' bits.

I dont generally have a problem with any musician making too much money or being to popular. I usually have a problem with the fans that worship them. That I think is ridiculous. It's not bono's fault that the world worships him and gives him all he money he has.

It's kind of funny. You can't please everybody. People think you make to much money. You admit it yourself and something still wrong with that to some people. LOL

I think U2 and Bono suck musical and ideologically we disagree about almost everything, but people who hate on Bono for being rich are ignorant fools I challenge you to find a musician who has given away more money. If you are going to hate on the guy do it for something real like he is a liberal loony or as generic as musicians come. But he is very generous and has given away more than most of us will ever see.

i doubt most of us would say no to the money this dude makes. I'm not a big U2 fan by any means whatsoever, but i suppose it's pretty cool the humanitarian stuff Bono does, but some of you guys seem to have more knowledge on the subject than i do, so perhaps he could be doing even more charity work?

Now if he'll just admit that he takes it up the ass then we'll be on the same page here. Or he can at least take those goddam stupid glasses off his pompous, old face.

Bono should totally stop giving to charity, have all his money for himself, by a nice motorbike, start becoming an alchoholic get typical rockstar syndrome then make a documentary about how his bandmates hurt his feelings and it will be called ''some kind of monster'' oh no... wait... nevermind A- if we were that rich about 90% would spend it on ourselves B- even if he is a dick, i wouldnt say so untill i met him in person C- for a load of hardcore non-comformists, you all seem to dive right into the trend of hating bono, ever since that southpark episode and I dont even like U2
Baconfish
Jesus, even when a bloke is being humble you all just have to go and proclaim that you think he's an arse. You should probably all just go back to watching South Park and taking everything a cartoon says as gospel, and that goes for you too UG staff; it's like you hand pick every single piece of U2 news for the stories in the front page because you know it'll make a lot of pointless whining and foot traffic.

Good for Bono. He seems like a very honest person. Not many artists will say they are overpaid or that they didn't like their latest album like bono did a few months ago

i don't listen to U2, but would someone please explain to me why everyone hates bono so much, with an actual logical argument, i.e. and example of something he did that can be considered worth hating by any reasonable standard?

I think the world may be ending. Bono finally saying something intelligent is a sign of the apocalypse.

I'm pretty sure that's more than the net worth of these poor countries he's trying to save. How about donating a cool million to a few countries and boost their economies?
idahoimmortal
Isn't it kind of funny that U2 won't play a venue for under a million, and yet Bono says he's overpaid. Bravo Bono. You almost got me this time. Almost.

I've seen several people comment saying that Bono only does charity for publicity, and if he actually cared about it he'd only do it annonymously...You people are idiots. It's the same reason Advertisers use celebrity endorsees. I know most of you apathetic people wouldn't give a second though, but some people will see one of their favourite musicians promoting a charity they didn't know about/didn't know much about etc. and They themselves will donate money as well. Bono's doing it to give the charity publicity, not himself.

All you bashers, do you know what a retainer is? If you don't, then shut the **** up...you don't know what goes on in the music biz. As a matter of fact, not many bands do retainers. Bands/artists like U2, Springsteen, AC/DC and Metallica do this. So to say that artist like Bono doesn't give money away is false. One way is to see how their crew is treated...and I can tell you, working with these guys were top notch. Having worked on their shows, all crew members have respect for them, and what they do. I can tell you so many horror stories of other bands. In fact, us 'roadies' have a site (invitation only) that show the artist that are miserable to work with, and the reasons. Bono is not a prima-dona, and U2 are approachable. They don't charge fees for autographs or pictures. As for free music...that's why you guys haven't made it...giving out music for free! You guys got it all wrong! Bono a poser? I guess you've met him...or other rockstars like him? I've come across so many posers at shows...it's funny how we laugh at them...they stick out like a sore thumb! Why don't you ask your favorite band why they don't let you backstage to hang out with them...or hook you up with some free tix to the next show...coz they won't! Chances are, security (which they hired) will stop you before you even get a chance. Meet and greets...you got to enter some sort of contest, or buy something of theirs. Look how much they care about you!
vagelier
Ok... so bono's probably a great and generous guy with all the charities and such but stil... If this money was burning in his pocket, he couldve just given it away. why would the press need knowing that? seriously? isn't this more about image than about money? i mean, seriously, if youre worth 400 million, you might as well give 50 million away to sell even more 'cause people think youre generous.
Oh ok. How about giving a CD out for free then or lowering concert tickets?
yeah. or do that.
Lchoke
I hate Bono and u2 if they thought they were overpaid they would simply not charge so dang much for tickets
jvdude3
when it says he's worth 400 million it doesnt mean he has 400 million in cash. it includes the monetary value of what he owns including discography and such. U2 is one of the most charitable bands out there, you dont see half the bands out there giving what U2 does. Once again the UG community bashes what they don't get
twat
Restlesscow : I like the way every one loves him for the fact he thows cash at a load of poor people and then tells us to do the same. Trouble is, aid like that does not always do alot of good and often ends up making the situation worse rather than better. And yeah, I know he is at least doing something and trying to help so he deserves credit there.
Heard of Live 8? Yet again the man cannot win. If he gives all his money away you say it will not work, if he works on trying to inform people about the problem and change attitudes then you say he's just showing off/being a hypocrite/looking for attention. Also a little note to anyone on here with the ability to read: You may want to have another look at the first line of the article, and maybe ponder it.
jimmypagejunior
I agree with twat on that one about the first line of the article. Also, if Bono is such a cash cow, then why haven't they broken even yet on this tour? Check out amnesty international, the ONE campaign, the RED campaign, the angiogenesis foundation, COEXIST, the FREE BURMA campaign, the Greenpeace foundation, the MUSIC RISING foundation, etc. and tell me how much he would be worth if he didn't support all these causes. How many causes has Slash or Led Zeppelin supported. Hell, even the Beatles, besides John, didn't throw out their names much to causes, and John Lennon is considered one of the greatest musicians of all time even though people hated him MORE than Bono. Nice to see that more people are standing up for Bono on this one and it kills me that everyone hates all the attention he's getting yet they still comment on every post about U2. They're the richest band in the world because they make the best music. Simple as that.
woodrow_16
Maybe if this poser is overpaid he should donate some cash and actually help people instead of acting like he does. South Park had it right when they called him the biggest piece of sh*t in the world!
fuzzybanjo
if he has so much money why doesnt he actually lower cost of tickets or cds? is it really necessary to over price EVERYTHING if they already have that much money? and what happened to donating to the ONE organization? I really used to like Bono but I mean come on man, give some money to someone who ACTUALLY NEEDS IT

'93 wrote: yeah...400 million all he needs is like 25 tops thats 375 million to charity...you save millions with that, such a waste also (about the football star) they are overpaid. this occurs while millions are starving
You think that's bad? Imagine baseball players who get paid millions to hit a god damn ball... Even though they're overpaid, soccer (football) players actually exert energy into their job.

having actually met Bono, I've never met someone who actually cares so much about important causes and acts out as much as he does. IMO he really is inspiring. Having talked to him about this sort of stuff in like 5 minutes, he would say something like "I've been given a gift that has given me the ability to do what i love, im just trying to give back" ok so he does give away ALL his money but im glad someone is at least trying. He cant fix everything in Africa by himself, if more artists did as much as he did we probably would see a lot of problems in Africa fixed
